That's because they moved the ball forward and took chances so they could score.. Unlike today's boring game where there are 10 back passes for every one forward. That's the reason why this was an exciting 2-2 game that went to PK's instead of a 1-0 snoozer that we get today

@@supafrancis While this style of play has been successful for teams like barcelona, spain, and man city and has led to many trophies and successes, it's understandable that it might not appeal to everyone. Some fans prefer a more direct and attacking style of play with fewer back passes and more focus on quick transitions and forward movement.

Probably THE game of that tournament. I was a huge fan of that Argentina team but loved a Beckham, Ince and Campbell as well. From Owen's amazing run, to Zanetti's finishing of a brilliantly orchestrated set-piece, Ortega's brilliance, England's collective fight after the influential sending off, I rewatched that match over and over again.

Best world cup i've seen imo. Back when this whole thing was broadcast free to air with every game live and uninterrupted here in NZ. Batistuta was my favorite player and Argentina was the team i've always rooted for after this world cup

Interistas will always be grateful toward our eternal captain Javier Zanetti. It was lamentable that he wasn't called up for 2006 and 2010 world cups

Nah, zanetti was in the Argentina squad for the 2006 world cup in Germany but wasn't a starter because he was too old, he was 34 at the time, I suppose he didn't play any match though at that world cup

@@emeegee7072 Nope. Pekerman didn't select him period. He went for Nicolas Burdisso instead. Both Pekerman and Maradona were insane not to have Zanetti as skipper for their respective Wcup squads.

What a team England had. The speed from Owen, they couldn't control him in the first half. Alan Shearer, amazing defensive job, saved England through the game.

This game has different historical significance for Argentina and England! Argentina's second goal was pure genius! I really thank FIFA for uploading this game! This game is very important to me! When I was 10 years old and saw this game, I decided to support Argentina all my life! I miss the strongest period of Serie A in the 90s! Crazy as it sounds, but Argentina has 3 players that reached success as coaches: Almeyda, Simeone and Gallardo. And Gallardo 2x times winning Copa Libertadores with River Plate and a Copa Sudamericana. But I could be missing more info as well

Como olvidar, yo tenía 12 años y vivía en Guayaquil, Ecuador (En una època en que Ecuador no sabía lo que era jugar en la Copa del Mundo), nuestras aspiraciones eran apoyar a los Latinos, pero en mi caso siempre sentí màs cariño por la Argentina, hoy mi fanatismo por la Celeste y Blanca ha crecido bastante! Ahora si tengo por quién hinchar, pero tampoco es que espero que Ecuador nos regale un título del Mundo, entonces una vez que volvemos a casa, me vuelco a hinchar por la C y B….

Owen was scaring and I’m impressed by the England’s squad, assuming you don’t know what stage it was, you could easily deduce it could be the final, intensity at its highest level. I’m speechless. Argentina was Argentina at that time, not as now when seem to be a indelible memory of a World Cup winner. Bogotá in lockdown.

Actually, that was one of Argentina's weakest teams since the '80s; probably second weakest. They had no ball control or possession compared to all their other sides. Only one could dribble- Ortega- and he mostly confused and fooled himself by going in circles due to his lack of vision, inability to anticipate the match around him. Batistuta was their deoderant. The 1998 team was a big letdown compared to '86, '90, '94. Most of their squads after '98 were better, if not by much until 2014. 2018 was the 2014 team, except old. This one coming up is the real deal.

Fue el segundo y último Mundial de "Orteguita" en gran nivel. En 2002 Cole y Campbell nos lo redujeron a su mínima expresión.

Definitely the best game of the 1998 World Cup. And one of the best goals ever scored in any World Cup. The night when the world discovered Michael Owen. His unforgettable solo goal really frightened the life out of Argentina when these two old enemies faced each other at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard in Saint-Etienne that evening. 22 YEARS AGO. How is THAT even possible?? Two penalties successfully exchanged in the first few minutes. Gabriel Batistuta 🇦🇷, and then Alan Shearer 🏴. Owen's wonder goal. Zanetti's stunning free-kick to draw the game level. Beckham being sent off after Simeone's theatrical fall. Sol Campbell's disallowed "goal". All culminating in the dreaded penalty shootout that would prove to be England's undoing yet again. Beckham going on to be "Public Enemy #1" by the English media and fans - until his redemption later in 2002, of course. What a game! 👍😁😁😁👏👏👏🇦🇷🏴🇦🇷🏴🇦🇷🏴

Como fan de Inglaterra, ¿puedo dar crédito a Argentina. Algunos de los mejores jugadores de este equipo, el genio Ortega, además de Verón, Batistuta, Simeone, Ayala, Zanetti, Crespo, López... Un gran equipo. Sé que nuestros países siempre han tenido muchos problemas pero amo el fútbol y la gente argentina, y el país es hermoso. Al diablo con estas rivalidades tribales. Me importa el buen fútbol. Este equipo de Inglaterra tenía algunos jugadores muy buenos (Scholes, Beckham, Shearer, Owen, posiblemente Campbell) pero en realidad los argentinos eran mejores de frente para atrás, considerando todas las cosas. Una de las cosas más tristes para mí es que no hemos visto a Lionel Messi, el mejor jugador de todos los tiempos, levantar el Mundial.

Una cosa más: todos sabemos en Inglaterra que Passarella fue una de las más grandes defensoras de todos los tiempos. Sin duda alguna. Un duro bastardo también. Pero personalmente no creo que fuera lo suficientemente bueno para dirigir este equipo. Forzar a Redondo (uno de los mejores mediocampistas defensivos de todos los tiempos) y a Caniggia a salir del equipo fue un poco tonto. También encuentro que su actitud hacia la homosexualidad y el pelo largo es muy anticuada y estúpida, incluso en 1998. Me interesaría saber si hay argentinos que piensen que me equivoco en esto.

Concuerdo contigo en que dejemos nuestras diferencias porque son mas nuestras similitudes, en especial el amor a este hermoso deporte. Admiro mucho la calidad de sus jugadores, la historia de sus equipos y el trabajo de renovacion en su seleccion. En cuanto a su pais tambien es hermoso y me gustaria visitarlo alguna vez. Aunque no lo creas nuestros antepasados fundadores como Sarmiento admiraban mucho su cultura y los tomaron siempre como ejemplo.

@@conradclipper Tienes toda la razon Passarella se ensucio bastante las manos tanto como DT y Presidente por ejemplo del River Plate en donde fue el principal responsable del historico descenso a la segunda categoria del futbol argentino, por otra parte a mi me favorecio bastante ya que soy hincha de Boca Juniors jaja

I always wonder why did Argentina's defense line was so deep during Owen's goal. If they were worried about Owen's pace could break their offside trap, they certainly didn't prepare for Owen to run straight at them with that blistering pace.

Y casi hacen ese mismo tiro libre minutos antes , solo que esa vez el Bati probó suerte con un su habitual disparo . Si ves el primer tiro libre desde la misma posición del segundo , el Pupi Zanetti se para en el mismo lugar en la barrera .

The 1998 world cup in France was an abserloutly incredible world cup, certainly one of the best world cups of all time along with the 2018 one. The best games of that tournament were England vs Argentina, Holland vs Brazil and France vs Croatia. I was 7 years old during this world cup in 1998 and I can remember it like it was last month, how time flies lol. We had a really great team in 1998 with the likes of Scholes, Beckham, Shearer and a young Owen and Glenn Hoddle was a really great manager.- He should have stayed for longer. Its a shame they didn't go further in this tournament.

Hoddle gave some progressive ideas but he was flawed, with a typical England negative mindset. Turned down two of England's most creative midfielders; Gascoigne and Le Tissier for the likes of David Batty and Rob Lee. He didn't even give Beckham a chance until he scored tat free kick in the group stages. Then he went on about mystical healing and Karma in the media, and that was his death knell.

Considering that Serbia is not a bad team, that Argentina performance was one of the best I have seen in the recent world cups. There have been many big wins in the group stages but Serbia is not North Korea or El Salvador. That 6-0 was much more diffuclt to achieve, and with one of the best goals of that world cup with almost 30 passes from Argentina.

Diego Simone had a massive influence on this game.. won the penalty & free kick that got the goals for Argentina. Also got Beckham sent off. Also, that handball on the 92nd minute from chamot would be a penalty in today’s game..

Have never been so totally totally gutted and devasted at losing a game of football as I was at England losing this match! So wanted revenge after Mexico 86! The way we played with 10 men in the 2nd half and extra time, having a goal dissallowed and then losing on penalties! GUTTED!!!!!

Argentina players have such fast feet and technical skills and look supremely physically fit , the freekick was a pleasure to watch how he ran behind the wall into the space, took it on his right and placed it with his left just beautiful i think Beckham had a poor game and Cambell was Englands MOM

Made sense if Louis Suarez stopped the ball by hand Like a goal keeper and got red card and then Ghana didn’t scored that penalty as well then they lost the game but Suarez is the man helped them for that luck . He couldn’t play the match vs Holland in semis and Uruguay lost as well .
