@@jonathancurtis5122 Tani should definitely start. He has got a goal coming. So unlucky not to have one yet in this tourney. At this point, I'd probably start him with Larin (assuming we don't go with 3 in the midfield). David's just too tired but Larin is really putting in the work despite all the hate he's getting. Bring in Bair late and let him bully the tired legs.

The David sub was justified imo. He hasn't been himself, looked completely gassed and Larin can still help us quite a lot defending and attacking set pieces where David is kinda useless. I liked all the subs personally. Going forward: - MUST find a good 10 (And I think Kone is too good where he is to try and force him into that role) - Gotta lock down Jebbison at the very least for dual nats (he's a Canadian born and raised and were not AS much of a mess, can't see why this can't be done) - Can't have Shaffelburg and Davies on the same side. I know it worked at times - but Davies is kind of muted offensively when Shaffelburg is in front of him because Shaffelburg just gets the ball and runs Overall, so happy with what we've seen. Really happy with this back 4 and I think whatever formation we go with this has to stay together. Kone, my god - him and Davies are of a different quality than anyone else on this team and its so noticeable. The sky is the limit for him. Crepeau has the net locked down. Ali made an impact as expected. Tani and Oso made more of an impact than I expected. Team has an identity again after a couple years without one!

We just seemed to not be able to capitalize in the final third. Agreed about a mid 3. Best reffing we’ve had so far, even with the missed calls. (Foul on Davies was a yellow; missed sideline ball was brutal). Lareya was poor, Kone exploited the open space.

When Davies got injured, it was a clean tackle and Montiel got the ball first. Davies knew he'd get there second and put himself in that situation. Unfortunate, but that's fútbol. The sideline call was bad. Refs thought it was gong out and the unlevel grass kept it in. Now do the calls that went against Argentina. Again, you can't win if you got don't score.

We need to change to a 4-3-3, we have two big CB that didn't get beat through the air all tournament. Clog the middle and make them beat you outiside. It would help create more turnovers in the middle which who help us counter more. I liked what i saw from Choinière and Kone together, with Staq they would have a good trio, it would also help service forwards who are asked to do too much in Marsch's 442.

Why doesn't Canada shoot more often? They get close and then decide one more pass and it's all over. They played well, I am proud of them, but it's as simple as shooting. And they would do well to consult with Sidney Crosby next time he is in the dressing room. He might tell them to have the lead ball carrier have a trailer. The carrier attracts the defence and then you drop pass and the follower let's a one timer go.....One small suggestion from a guy that admittedly is no soccer expert, LOL, but I have loved this fabulous showing by Canada. To me, they played in a Canadian style. Fast, attacking, not dirty, and not whining about the refs or calls and losing with class.

My only takeaway is you don't know what you are talking about. Canada beat Peru when folks like you said they wouldn't. They outplayed Chile and achieved the draw they were looking for to advance to the quarterfinals. They outplayed a 3-0 Venezuela team to advance to the semi finals. They did all of this in hot and humid conditions, under a new manager, in their first Copa tournament and in front of opposition crowds. Messi also tipped his hat to Canada for being such a strong team. Perhaps you get your jolly's off of being a negative person. It's sad. I feel for people like you. Marsch said that David & Shaffelburg were completely exhausted & it looked like it. It was no surprise that David was taken off. Regarding Kone kicking the ball into his back. Seriously, Kone hardly kicked it at all & you would swear that the guy had been shot in the back. He should have gotten either a yellow card, or an Oscar for his disgusting & obvious fake injury!!!

@paulprendergast3184
@paulprendergast3184 16 күн бұрын
Overall, it was a solid effort against the world #1. I look at our team and I don't think we have the personnel to play a 4-4-2. Our back line is now much more solid than in the WC where it was clearly our Achilles heel. The central midfield combo looked solid too. I know we didn't get production up top, but our strike team is also solid and we have good depth there. We do not have the quality wingers needed to play a 4-4-2. Laryea was a stop gap for an injured Buchanan. Millar just didn't impress at all. I know everyone loves him these days, but Schaffelburg lacks the quality needed to play wing in that formation. He is a runner and an energy player. Quite frankly, he wasted both of our best early chances by lacking composure and vision. If that had been Di Maria or Colombia's Diaz, they'd have found the open teammate in the box on those two opportunities, not snatched at poor shots and missed so badly. When chances come against a huge opponent, you can't waste them. We may need to play with an extra midfielder to let Kone or whomever play slightly higher and link better with the 3 we would be playing up front. Marsch needs to look at this because even with Buchanan and Scaffelburg in a 4-4-2, we lack the ability to make the incisive pass from the midfield in the final third.

The Davies injury obviously sucked, but the more egregious bad call was when the ball quite obviously did not go out of play, but was called out, snuffing a Shaffelburg run that looked really promising. Also, the pitch was complete ass. I'd like to see Jesse treat the third place game as a chance to try something completely different. Screw it. We haven't been scoring goals with what he's been trying so far, so it's time to rotate in some different players to see if that makes an offensive difference.

Both Larin's and David's touches today were off. To me it looked like the moment was too big for them. They just kept messing up any chances or passes they had. Very frustrating to watch the two guys who are supposed to be cool and calm in the final third just not be able to perform to the level we need them to. On the other hand, it's Argentina ffs and I was overall very happy with how we played...but this "getting chances but not converting" thing is becoming very frustrating. I hope the guys can bag a few in the third place match. Let's go Canada!

Your take is incorrect. Both David and Larin played well. They didn't play amazing but they certainly weren't bad. They played sound defensively, had a tremendous work rate, ran more than most other players (due to their position & Marsch's system) and made some great reads. David scored and assisted on the other Canadian goal. He also scored in the shootout. Larin was often in the right positions but rarely received the ball (he could have scored a few times had the ball gone to him). He was also one of the key reasons David scored as his work on the defensive side, followed by his pass to Shaffelburg was the reason David was able to score. I find too many people, perhaps because they are naive or young, have unrealistic expectations of what this team is. They played some of their finest soccer ever. They earned their way to the semi final of the Copa America on the backs of players like David and Larin and they have pushed Canada into new territory with the World Cup around the corner. But after success, there are always the naysayers who come out and start blaming. Millar shouldn't be on the pitch, Larin sucks, Bombito doesn't know what he's doing, Crepeau doesn't know how to play goal...the list goes on and on. It's fine that you like Tani, but he played as a sub with fresh legs against old ones. He's very young and does not have a lot of experience. And a players performance isn't one sided, there is a defense side too, which so many folks overlook. And by the way, if you're cranking on David and Larin for not scoring, neither did Tani and he had several A1 chances.

@@tednitta1785 Perhaps you are having difficulty comprehending. I specifically wrote “Both David and Larin played well. They didn't play amazing but they certainly weren't bad.”. This is fairly easy to comprehend. If you want to base a players performance strictly on goals scored, then I presume you’re also cranking on Messi, who until yesterday hadn’t scored either. It’s a simpletons view on player performance. Canada made it to the semi finals. At worst they will be 4th place. Canada played very well. David had 1 goal, 1 assist and Larin had a hockey assist.

Some folks argue that because Montiel got to the ball first, there is no foul. This is incorrect. I'll take you back to the Peru game when Miguel Araujo got to the ball first, but still received a red card for his contact with Shaffelburg. Getting to the ball first has minimal relevance as to whether a foul has occurred. There is no reference to making contact with the ball in the section relating to Fouls and Misconduct in the Laws of the Game, but it may be considered by the referee in deciding whether contact was careless, reckless or excessively forceful. And that is the key, was the contact careless, reckless or with excessive force (in a nut shell). In the Davies situation, it wasn't careless, reckless and it did not result from excessive force. No foul on the play.
@auroradarg
@auroradarg 17 күн бұрын
@@mccullochmike Exactly this. Just like getting to the ball first doesn't mean there isn't a foul, a player getting injured doesn't mean there was a foul. Davies got injured from a normal movement of play. The tackle wasn't reckless and can't be considered a foul (let alone a YELLOW CARD like OP suggested) only because Davies got injured. It was just unfortunate, but clearly no foul there.

Yes the foul on Davies was a yellow card. The officiating has been bad. It is frustrating when it is one sided. The foul on Richie should have been called as the ref called the same foul on Larin 5 min earlier. Soccer needs to change. Every other sport has made changes to create scoring and highlight the skilled stars. Soccer is the only sport that hasn't changed. The holding and grabbing on corners is ridiculous - it looks like American football, guys barely touched rolling on the ground and replays shows they weren't even touched what they are grabbing. I like the MLS rule of - if you are down for more then 15 sec then you are off for 2 min. Yellow cards should be sent off for 5-10 min and the team has to play short.

There's a definite learning curve to going against the best in the world, and hopefully, Canada is learning. Within the passing game where speed of ball movement is essential for success, Canada's hit a ceiling as they can't help holding on to the ball for longer than they should. It's not their fault if they weren't drilled any other way. Don't train harder, train smarter. Save energy (for your player's sake) and let the ball do the work. One touch/two touch drills will sharpen Canada's overall speed of execution at a lower energy and injury cost. When the new manager is finding excuses and desiring "a bigger pool of players", you realize that you're dealing with "a rock mindset trying to improvise within a jazz setting". We not only lack the chops, we lack the awareness of not knowing that we lack the chops. We're far from being out of the woods here. Seak to study the game rather than seaking a bigger pool of players... who are only going to execute more of your old deficient game plan. Like musical notes, more players won't do you any good if you don't know how to use them. Soccer is not rocket science!! 🇨🇦 Rise up, Wise up!! 🇨🇦 🇨🇦 Go Canada!! 🇨🇦

My expectations of them pulling off an upset here went down dramatically when I knew they wouldn't be playing in a climate controlled stadium. The conditions affect Argentina just the same but it dramatically reduces the chances of the underdog securing something, whereas Argentina's superior quality of structured play and game management allows them to get the job done.

Trailing leg with a scissor action after the fact - You can win the ball but you can't deliberately deliver a potentially injurious action. In most federations that is a foul and card and in SA club play it is. However in this tournament, the referees were consistent in being out of step with IFAB laws. This situation is something Canada had compartmentalized and set it aside. While I believe Canada did not give up a PK in this tournament, referees gave our opposition dead balls in threatening positions which did not seem to occur as much the other way. Read that as you want. I was okay with player selections for games, I hope the selection widens this fall. We will be playing a notch down although both of our CONCACAF brothers will be in a sore mood.

"I hope Rodrigo is ok" you said regarding the yellow card Kone picked up... come on! That was unecessary, but it was gentle. De Paul has been faking the whole game always going down and screaming in pain even though he was barely touched. He managed to make canadians get a few yellows. Earlier in the copa, Jonhston received a head to his forehead and nothing. I bet that if he would have played it like De Paul, it would have been a red card. It's a shame that this comedia del arte is still so present, especially in south america. I respect Johnston for not faking, but if I was his coach, I would tell him to fake having the worst commotion of his life to influence the ref. I'm not a specialist, but it seems to me that fakers never get punished for it. Maybe the ref will see through and laugh a little, but they never get punished. Players who don't fake get screwed by the refs. This might be the most important factor that slows the fan base from growing in north america. I felt the referees were unfair to canadians throughout the tournament.

@@elche1976 Any suggestion that the refs management of a game does not dramatically impact the flow is highly naive. The ref is there to ensure the game stays balanced, fair, and that the two sides can contest uninhibited but they wield a very real power over the game - that is a fact. When calls are inconsistent and one-sided (which any unbiased assessment of this match and the last one reveals to have been the case), it significantly sucks the life out of the play. That ball along the touchline Shaff was carrying was in and he was off. A few moments later an Argentina ball clear goes out and is allowed to play, giving Argentina a very strong scoring chance where one was taken away from Canada. Even late in the match when a yellow card is issued to Argentina, it effectively stops the flow when what Canada really needed was to be allowed to take a quick throw in. Game management, indeed. Yes, this is a part of the game, and Canada simply needs to rise above it, but one shouldn't pretend that it doesn't have a massive impact, and anyone who thinks there isn't a very real bias towards Argentina reaching the final is utterly naive about the monetary realities involved in these things. No excuses, Canada knew this would be the case and that they would need to rise up and overcome. They weren't able to muster that on this day, and that is on them and nobody else.

@greglawrence9230 great therapy session. You initially cast blame on the refs and play victim. But in the end, you come full circle to acceptance and admit Canada wasn't good enough and is to blame. Your hour is up. See you next session.
