Ben Affleck’s Argo was a runaway hit in 2012. His highly anticipated follow-up to The Town, it finally won Affleck the respect from his peers that he always deserved, with it earning a Best Picture Oscar, despite the man being shut out as director in a controversial move. Audiences and critics alike raved about the movie, but it wasn’t without controversy. Some involved with the original “Canadian Caper” that the film was based on slammed it for various inaccuracies. However, these were largely dismissed as the film set out to be entertainment rather than a documentary, which is fair enough.
In this episode of WTF Really Happened to this Movie, we dig into the true story behind Argo, including the truth behind the CIA operative Affleck played, Tony Mendez, who, as the film depicts, cooked up a scheme where he pretended to be scouting locations for a sci-fi pic to rescue hostages in the Iran Hostage Crisis of 1979-1981. We dig into the Canadian and American roles in the caper, as well as the actions of diplomat Ken Taylor. He played a small part in the film but was credited by many (including then-President Jimmy Carter) as the real hero behind the operation.
This episode of WTF Really Happened to this Movie is written by Jake Dee, narrated by Steve Seigh and edited by Paul Cooper. Let us know in the comments whether or not you think Argo’s inaccuracies are a serious issue or if this is just a regular Hollywood occurrence in the pursuit of entertainment.

Jimmy Carter said the movie gave almost full credit to America for the rescue, when 90% of the work was done by Canada, and how Ken Taylor was the main hero instead of Tony Mendez

Agreed that you have to go in knowing that based on a true story does not mean that everything in a movie will be factual. I really enjoyed Argo the movie and since this introduced me to Tony Mendez I went on to read his book. He did a lot more in his career than what led to the story of Argo.

21:30 Iranian here. I don't think this is fair criticism. Though the prime minister and his many on his cabinet opposed the attack and the hostage situation, the real authority in Iran, the supreme leader Ayatollah Khomeini fully supported the attack on embassy and the majority of Iranians supported Khomeini. Prime Minister Bazargan resigned shortly after this, his party and other Liberal democrats were purged and the foreign Minister Banisadr that you mentioned here was impeached and had to flee Iran only two years in his presidency.

The actual events are so unreal they had to change things.... It is a very good movie, loosely based on real events. Read the book, The Canadian Caper if you want the facts. Also it was almost unbelievable that the Canadians could have pulled off such a thing in 1981, so why would anyone believe it in 2012. Even Ken Taylor said it was "fun" and "Thrilling". Canadians don't worry to much about taking credit, just actually doing it.

Puh-lease. That old quote about no movie is ever supposed to be a documentary has long since worn out its welcome. No movie is ever supposed to go out of its way to be the OPPOSITE of a documentary, either. Hollywood used to be able to find some common ground between the two, but nowadays has no clue.

I criticized this movie myself but I get why they did what they did: 1. The US audience would not be as interested in a movie where the main hero is not American and 2. If they did give everyone credit, this movie would be 10 hours long and disjointed. Affleck is sort of a stand in for everyone who was involved. They should've given him a different name maybe.

I loved the movie. The main story is 100% accurate- A fake movie, hostages, etc. The cia participation was hidden. The main issue was that characters were combined. Timelines were combined. This is pretty standard for every hollywood "true story" since they need to create a narrative, and have a story that can be followed. The Canadian side of the story has already been done.

Argo did not paint Iranian's in an unflattering light. I don't know about the rest of it but I do know how much of a mess that era was in the region. Iran was in turmoil with alot of conflicting emotions. Mob mentality became the norm. People can become incredibly stupid under those circumstances. The worst among the crowd will often be the ones who make the calls. The movie showed this from the perspective of people who were being targeted, trying to escape. The only things I saw in this movie that I had issue with were the numerous and very exaggerated conflicts they threw in trying to increase tension. It was poorly done and should have prevented this movie from winning best film.

I'm sorry dude but Mendez was not portrayed as heroic. No. He was not. He was poured as someone who was just doing a gig. He was indifferent if they made it. It was about getting it done. It was a job. Not heroism. And the film plays him that way. He was not a martyr. Of course there were ton of inaccuracies. But you are seriously picking on Affleck in this video.

It's a movie. That means it aims to amuse and entertain a large audience, so it can make money. It is not a documentary, which, although they usually have a point of view, is more likely to use archival footage, interviews with the people involved, and try to keep the facts in the foreground. To complain that the movie wasn't totally accurate in its recitation of events is silly. Was the movie any good? Yes. And what, exactly, did Affleck being "nine inches taller" than the person he is portraying have anything to do with anything?

This is why Americans ignorance is known the world over. Affleck thought he could “American-Wash” this story, because it wasn’t well known in America. Well, it’s very, very well known in Canada and was a best selling novel. He then had the balls to premier the movie in Toronto and be surprised at the outrage. Guess he should’ve premiered it in American, where you guys are so sensitive you need rewrite history so you’re always the star and the hero. You don’t have the attention span for the truth and wonder why the rest of the world calls you stupid.
