I had a sheltie when I was younger. He was the best dog I've ever had. He was the runt of the litter. I'm a sucker for the underdog. But let me tell you, way smarter than me! Fortunately, he did not contest my authority. He was perfectly happy being my 2nd in command. I loved him so much! He lived to be just under 16 yrs. I will never forget him!

As a Sheltie dad that lost their fur baby recently this year, I can certainly say that they really are one of the best family dogs. My boy gave me 15 years of love and care before he passed in January and I will never forget my precious sable boy

I was attacked by an Alsatian when I was little and avoided dogs for years until a sheltie decided to be my friend, actually he didn’t give me a choice, he chased me around the playing field and then insisted on being friends! He was a very sweet dog 💖

I really hope your kitty get feels better soon. Vanessa is a great teacher, she explains everything so clearly and thoroughly. My sister’s kitty, Cleo, had diabetes and she was able to manage it for a couple of years w/diet and medicine from the vet. (She even cooked special meats for her for a while, Cleo was 14yrs old at the time - an elderly little sun spot hogging diva. She was a beautiful tuxedo kitty, so tiny, like a little ballerina kitty. I loved her too.) ❤🐾🐈⬛ :)

So nice to see a Sheltie! My childhood friend had a Sheltie, and she was a great dog. She would sit between the seats of the minivan when her mom would drive a handful of us home from junior high, and we'd love on her.

Shelties are absolutely fantastic. My boy Samwise turned a year old last month. He's my third Sheltie, and undoubtedly the smartest by far. He's also bizarrely outgoing. Kids in particular are his favorite. The little guy is bursting with personality! If you get a Sheltie, be prepared to not get an animal, but rather a toddler with four wheel drive, no thumbs, and a body hair problem. They are little fluffly geniuses - absolutely incredible breed!

Adorable! My first dog was a sheltie, and she really was intelligent, great with kids, but reserved/wary of strangers. We grew up together, so she became extra protective whenever we went on walks--and gods, was she EVER a barker. It's been 14 years, and I still miss her like it was yesterday. Twyla is an absolute beauty, and what a singing voice! Lol. I'd love to see more shelties among your clientele. They really are fantastic dogs.

As a sheltie owner i feel like it's VERY dependent on the individual if they're good for families or not. They need a lot of attention and are extremely sensitive. Mine does very badly with small children, she doesn't want anything to do with them and neither do her siblings. If she's slightly stressed she will get somach aches. I feel like families are per default a more stressful environment than single people or couples.

The shelties I've known were mostly EXTREMELY skittish, but there was an older couple who did therapy work with 4 of them in a row. I think being retired allowed them to socialize the dogs properly.

Nope. If you get a sheltie from a respectable breeder who handles pups the moment they enter the world, they are the best family dogs. Respectable breeders put in a lot of time and hard work into making sure their pups are well socialized from the start. If youre visiting a breeder and their dogs dont like young children, thats a bad sign and I would recommend looking for a different breeder, as that is not something they should be continuing in their breeding program. Shelties are more reserved with strangers because they bond so closely with their family. As long as their job is pleasing mom and dad, theyre happy doing anything.

@@AshleyNicole2260 thank you, my breeder is excellent. She has lots of kids herself, socialises the puppies from the start and they're always with them. The puppys love the kids, some even become state certified assistence dogs for children. It's just in some shelties character that they're not very fond of hectic environments since they are sensitive and my pups litter happened to just be more of the sensitive kind, perhaps inherited by their father who's from another breeder. How sensitive the individual dog is usually shows up to all its extent when they're full grown. This is why i said in the beginning of my comment, that it depends on the individual. The claim that well socialised dogs ALWAYS like children is just very infeasible, if thats what you're saying. Some are just sensitive and their sensitivity is a blessing and a curse. I guess it also depends on how well behaved the kids are though.

I grew up with Shelties _everywhere_ in my family. My grandma had 3 or 4 at one time. We had 2, Charlotte and Savannah, when I was born and adopted a 3rd later on, Ella (though after the other two were long gone). They are such sweet fuzzy babies and the absolute best guard dogs. Charlotte wore a path through the backyard where she would run from one side of the fence to the other to watch for strangers, and Ella adopted the path for her own after we got her. Twyla is such a cute little one, and that howl is so pretty! Definitely buying that album

Hahahaha!! I had never known shelties to howl until she did it for the first time. I contacted her breeder and was like "uuhhh what?" Apparently her father and her brother both howl🤦♀️🤷♀️

Grew up with a sheltie. Absolute sweetheart who would do anything to protect us kids. Dad felt perfectly comfortible leaving us kids on our own for a few hours (we were in double digits but just) because Emmy wouldn't even let birds near our yard much less anything bigger.

There are many rescue groups also, if you are looking for a particular type of breed. I needed a smaller size than some (under 40 lbs) shelters often have. The 2 Aussie mixes I ended up with, are amazing and bring laughter & joy to our home.

yup! All our shelties are huge, even though they came from show lines lol. The smallest one is 28 pounds, and that’s just because he’s still growing. We think he’s gonna be 45 full-grown

It seems like the tri-color shelties tend to be smaller, than Sable and red. Not always though. Our tri-color looked like a fuzzy, soft bunny with almost no coat & huge ears when he was a pup. He only grew to 25 lbs but looked way bigger because of the coat when it finally grew in. But he was the sweetest playful boy, for 16 years.

Shelties are super smart! I had one whose favorite thing was going on car rides and she would ALWAYS know when we were about to leave. No matter how stealthy we tried to be when she needed to stay behind she would pick up on the tiniest of clues. She almost never barked, however but had strong herding instincts. Sweetest, most loyal dog you ever saw. Miss you April.

I had a sheltie growing up and when he passed, I didnt think I could own another. But the more i researched other breeds, the more I knew the sheltie was my breed. The Austrailian Shepherd is a very close second, along with the Leonberger. Twyla is definately one in a million

So cute! Shelties are awesome. I had a Sheltie who would sit on the patio under the kitchen window where no one could see her and howl. She would go outside and then not want to come in right away so she could sing the song of her people. An elderly neighbor said that she heard her at night and it gave her chills. Lmao
