There's just no way Sokka planned that conversation to be overheard by Katara. Pulling scams on scammers is one thing, but manipulating Katara with their dead mother does not track with his character.

I understand what you’re saying, and I respect your opinion! ❤ Though I’m not sure manipulation is the best way to describe what he did? To me, it comes off as more heartfelt and honest than anything. And yeah Sokka has his dumb moments too, but generally he’s a very intelligent, resourceful person.

I just realised Sokka not being able to remember what his mother looked like X number of years after her death, would’ve been a reality for all of humanity before the advent of and spread of photography. Which relatively speaking really wasn’t that long ago in history. Kinda crazy eh?

@@thedarkemissary paintings can be inaccurate, especially depending on the artists skill. Photos are almost always 100% accurate, unless blurry or the person was obscured. Obviously I know about paintings, I’m an artist.

They never explicitly explain Combustion Man but they hint at it in Iroh's explanations of firebending. He's projecting his chi to bend at a distance, essentially.

Messenger pigeons and other birds in old times were only trained to fly to one castle or place, so a bird would be trained to know a place as home then shipped out to other castles in cages so when you needed to send a message youd just tie it to the birds foot and set it free and it then flies home. So its safe to say hawky isn't realistic even tho super cool.

Hawky would work the same. They're likely trained to go to only a few select locations. And the Fire Nation most certainly has a fine-tuned messenger hawk network across their nation and colonies. It would work the same as any post office still today. You're letter isn't picked up from your mailbox and then carried by your mail carrier all the way to its destination. It would be taken to the office, address checked, letter sorted, and sent out via another carrier and make its way throught the system to its destination.

@@HickoryDickory86 a real hawk could only be trained to recognize one place as home not a few, it would NOT work like a post office today only the the royale family or whoever is in charge is the only one sending messages not the public and theyre only going to be for urgent things not just writing letters for fun. I guess this is fine and could happen in the avatar world but everything you said isnt realistic when it comes to real life.

@@HickoryDickory86 if you werent royal or a rich landowner youd have to hire a messenger thats going to your destination which could take months to deliver. This would be the equivalent of a post office, it would simply be impossible to have messenger pigeons for the whole city/village it would take to much time to train them and breed/catch them all only the elite had access to messenger pigeon

There was a way to make a messenger bird go to 2 places in old days. Location 1 haves food. Location 2 haves water. To go to location 1 you starve the bird a few hours. In old days people didn't waste food or have bird feeders so it was harder for the messenger bird to find food. Most of the time he'd go to location 1. If you wanted the bird to go to location 2 you wouldn't give him water. But this wouldn't work on rainy days because the bird will drink from puddles.

This episode is a great example of why I always say that Avatar the last Airbender has quite deep and important messages that far too many people go into adulthood never learning. Behind a "kids" show are emotions and aspects of life as a part of nature that people are taught to avoid, and so learn to fear. Taking in the good where you can is always good, glad you two are watching this series ❤❤.

Why is this one of those tidbits every reactor gets told? Sokka doesn’t particularly resemble his mother any more than any cartoon character resembles any other minimally related character. People repeat this for no other reason than that it was repeated before.

The only notable thing is that they’re both clearly water tribe, let alone family. If you’re serious, what about them is uniquely similar? Just saying they look similar and they were made that way doesn’t explain anything.

irl, messenger birds are bought from the place you wanna send to. you take them with you, and when you wanna send a letter back, tie a message to them, and let them go. they'll find their way back to their nest, with the handler you bought them from. Historically,thats how they were used, and theyre a variation of pidgeons. im not quire sure genetically if theyre considered a subspecies, or how exactly theyre classified, but, today, theyre almost extinct, if not already. Hawky on the other hand, is a very good boy

Exactly this, the birds would be trained to have one designated home so it isnt like you could send a bird to multiple places so although hawky is quite the good boy hes not very realistic

They were just regular pigeons. Pigeons can navigate over long distances extremely well, and can find their nest from hundreds of miles away. A "messenger pigeon" is just a pigeon that was made to nest near some place where someone would like to send a message to.

This city used to be named "North Chung-Ling", but its inspiring statue of Ozai prompted authorities to change the name. It is now called "Fire Fountain City", an industrial town supporting the Fire Nation war efforts.

I love the little detail that sokka carries his cool new sword around all over the place because that’s what you do when you have a cool new sword. He doesn’t even pull it out of the sheath all episode, it just stays with him because it’s a COOL NEW SWORD.

are you sure about that? most likely, the fire nation colonies continue to trade with nearby earth kingdom towns. having some earth kingdom money would be entirely consistent with their cover identity as colonials.

In ancient days people used coins from all over because an ounce of gold or silver is the same as an ounce of gold or silver in other places. Now a days since money varies by value per nation most people stick with 1 currency.

Okay, so regarding how messenger Hawks work. They can't just fly anywhere and back. Privately owned messenger hawks are trained to fly to a certain post office, which then further relays the message the hawk was carrying. Usually you'd have to train the messenger hawks to then also return to you, which Sokka obviously didn't. The messenger hawks used by the fire navy are often trained to fly to whatever station the soldiers report to and then back to the location of the soldiers.

This is another really great episode. Also in the last scene of the last episode if you pay attention to the painting Sokka makes he paints Toph to look like her wanted poster from this episode. I guess he really did think it looked good.
