I just love your personality. You always inspire me to calm the f*ck down and stop taking everything so seriously. It’s sewing, not brain surgery! I don’t know why I’m so scared to try new things. I am so grateful for your videos. I am trying to learn your attitude even more than the skills you teach. ❤️

Thank you so much! There was a time when I took sewing very seriously, just be patient with yourself. I started seeing the process as a journey rather than the end result... which is why I love the beginner series I teach because it breaks down all the fundamentals of sewing that I find so tedious but rewarding. I also started to see creating fashion, more as art rather than products. My advice to you is, to embrace where you are, begin every project with the mindset of just having fun... exploring (as kids do) and enjoy even the mess-ups bc that is all part of learning and growing as creators (and humans). Much love to you! Thank you again for your comment (it inspires me to know I inturn inspire others... even if its not for what I teach but in my attitude). ♥️🙏🌞

Thanks for your great explanation of grommet vs eyelet. I will be applying to a crocheted hat to add a leather lace to hold the hat on. Do you think I need to look for a small grommet to accommodate the crocheted fabric thickness rather than using an eyelet? Or would a simple eyelet be suitable?
@LTRLTrendFashnGuru
@LTRLTrendFashnGuru 3 жыл бұрын
Definitely prefer to use the grommets instead of the one-piece eyelet. Also if your crochet is very open weaved you want that little bit of support that the grommet "washer" piece may give. Or you may want to add more structure to the backing? Try a test before? Lemme know how it goes... you can connect with me on insta or on my new Telegram channel @ltrltrend

Hi Faren. Thank you for this video. I bought a set that had the hole maker, the bit that goes underneath and the thing you hammer to get the grommet sealed (hope that all makes sense?). I am using the same fabrics (cotton) but for some reason occasionally all of it just falls out? I don’t understand what I’m doing wrong because it doesn’t happen every time but if I want to sell my items then I need to be sure they’ll stay in. I was wondering if you could give me any advice please? I will try the added bit of fabric, but have you anything else if that doesn’t work? Thank you for your time 🤩😅🤩

Love your video.❤️ Really helpful. Is there any chance I can put an eyelet without the tool?
@LTRLTrendFashnGuru
@LTRLTrendFashnGuru 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can try, but it is very difficult to make them look good. If you just use a hammer the eyelet will be smashed and it may even damage the eyelet backing (making it useless and causing you more problems...bigger holes in your fabric when you have to take out the damaged eyelet). My suggestion is, if you absolutely do not have the tool, find something similar like the tool and do a test before installing into your project. Best of luck!

Hello. Great video. My question is.. what size grommit do you think I would use to make a corset on the back of a denim jacket? And also do you think a grammar machine hole puncher is better than just a hammer and base plate that’s in the store
@LTRLTrendFashnGuru
@LTRLTrendFashnGuru Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! I always like to do a test in the actual fabric before going to the final project. But if I were make a corset on the back of a jean jacket, I would most likely use the heavy duty grommets with the "washer" on the back for extra support. The grommet machine, can be pretty pricey and if you are only doing one project than it is probably not worth the investment because the hammer and tools doing a pretty good job of securing the grommets down. Again, I always suggest doing a test with the grommets you choose before punching holes and smashing grommets into your final project. best of luck! Check the link above (pinned comments from me to see where I buy my grommets).

Great video! I'm hoping to insert eyelets/grommets into as thin of fabric as possible (like muslin). Any ideas for how to reinforce the fabric but still keep that thin look/feel? Can you just reinforce the part that you are putting the eyelet or grommet through? Thanks so much!
@LTRLTrendFashnGuru
@LTRLTrendFashnGuru 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can try using a non woven interfacing (preferably NOT fusible), that fits around the hole and grommet edges - just enough to reinforce the hole. You may also want to try other materials such as "venice" (which may also be called interlock (?) - it looks kinda like an organza but it is used in lingerie to stiffen stretchy transparent fabrics. Hmm, I have also tried using medium weight plastic (again only cutting enough to fit the outer edges of the grommet/eyelet). My suggestion is to test out a swatch before going to your project. Best of luck!! Thanks for watching!!! 💖

Just a trough... You may want to use a brass hammer for your grommet or eyelet tool. It will reduce the rebond and transfer the impact force better. The brass head grip the tool and transfer the impact force a lot better when you don't hit the tool perfectly at the center. You can find nice one online for metal letters stamping. They weight between one to two pounds. I think you will get good results. I switched from a 48 oz ball pein hammer to a 32 oz brass hammer for metal stamping. It's night and day...

For a 10 mm grommet are Can you use a hole puncher on denim?
@cherim8923
@cherim8923 2 жыл бұрын
Not sure if you'll see this, but... I'm making a deconstructed/patchwork denim blanket, and I'll be adding eyelets/grommets in several sizes, double-cap rivets, heavy-duty snaps, and buttons (jeans-style tack buttons and regular sew-on ones), in addition to extra (handmade) pockets, some with flaps. I know I need to use interfacing/stabilizer for most of those things, but I'm not very familiar with interfacing, and have no idea what type to use. (I've also seen twill tape mentioned as a substitute, but I wouldn't have the slightest clue how to even use that!) The denim is decently heavy (~12oz weight, mostly from Carhartt & Duluth men's work jeans). Do you maybe have an opinion on what type/brand I should use? Any advice would be appreciated! By the way, I saw someone else comment on their "grommets" being packaged as "eyelets"... All mine are the same! I have probably 6 different packs, from two different brands; all 2-piece, but all called eyelets. It seems to me, at least in all the stores around here, they only market them as grommets if they're over a certain size (1" or so). Anything smaller is called an eyelet regardless of technical correctness, lol. 🤷‍♀️
@LTRLTrendFashnGuru
@LTRLTrendFashnGuru 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for your comment (sorry for the late reply).... Your best bet with the interfacing is to buy a little piece of light, medium and heavy and test out which interfacing would work best. Most likely you will not need a heavy weight because since these grommets etc... are only going to be used on a blanket (not something that will be worn and be used everyday like your button on your jeans) you can probably get away with a light weight woven or non-woven. It's really up to you, some metal hardware does not even have to be structured if it is only being used decoratively.

Thank you for sharing, this was helpful & yet... I'm a little confused still, based on what I bought. The package says eyelets however they appear to be in 2 parts, based off of what you said 2 parts makes them grommets either way, I need to find a tool & hope for the best, whatever they are
@LTRLTrendFashnGuru
@LTRLTrendFashnGuru 2 жыл бұрын
Hahaha, sorry... that does sound confusing, but this is what I had researched when I was looking up the difference - in terms of why the manufacturer name their product an eyelet when in fact it is a geommet... that is a different story. Let me try to help! As for the tool, if the kit did not come with it, you will need to measure the inside of the eyelet (from inside edge to inside edge to know what size the diameter). You will have to order a tool to match the size - my favourite website is: sewingsupplydepot.com Best of luck😘

Hi Emiliano, thanks for your question... best to do a test on a scrap piece of fabric (that is similar to your t-shirt) - you may want to add a light weight circular piece of fusing that is wider than the grommet size (1/2" grommet = 3/4" interfacing/fusing piece). If that is too stiff you may want to try another piece of t-shirt material for the backing. Best of luck! ✂

Has anyone applied a grommet to a bamboo shade? I'm a little unsure how to get it to grip and stay on. Manufactured shades use them but have a powerful tool to press them on. I will have to do it by hand. Should I glue it just before I hammer it on?

Umm, not sure what your bamboo shade looks like but you may want to support the grommet on the back with some sort of stiffer fabric (or leather... or plastic washer as seen here: tinyurl.com/yxxm47m8 Best of luck

How do you know if the post of the grommet is high or low enough for the fabric you're using? I purchased a kit, but the grommet doesn't finish nice, it's got rough edges where it's turned under onto the washer!
@LTRLTrendFashnGuru
@LTRLTrendFashnGuru 3 жыл бұрын
You will know if the post is long enough when all your fabric is caught in the grommet nicely. If your grommet has rough edges is it not a question of high or low post but quality of grommet. As you might have seen from the vdieo the eyelet I was using was not the best quality (as it was the eyelet that came with the tool I bought) and the edges of the post were scored and therefore they rolled down in separate pieces (kinda like a banana), but the grommet (the larger one) was better quality and rolled down in one whole piece. Hope this makes sense... you can find quality grommets and eyelets (and all things sewing supply at my favourite supply store) here: sewingsupplydepot.com

Hi Faren! Thanks so much for the demonstrative video :) Can you give us the amazon link to the grommet tool or a link to a comparable one on amazon? Also, do you have an IG page that we can follow?

Thank you so much! Unfortunately, I do not have an Amazon link (I do not like to promote Amazon on here), however, I do have a link to the grommets I buy from a small family business (and they ship worldwide) - no affiliate and no sponsorship. You may also want to check your local hardware store, because I did buy these different sized grommet/eyelet kits from my local hardware store. And yes...I do have an IG page -- @LTRL Trend ♥️ thanks for being here

Pls maa'm can i finish sewing my dress before applying my eyelet or grommet
@LTRLTrendFashnGuru

Yes, in fact, eyelets and geommets are one of the last steps you do. So, most definitely finish the dress than add the grommets or eyelets. Beat of luck and thanks for watching. 🙏

You can stitch a button hole instead of using another peice of fabric.

We've bought eyelets that are bigger than the groove in the plier, which is about as old as me! What can we do to solve the problem?
@LTRLTrendFashnGuru
@LTRLTrendFashnGuru 3 жыл бұрын
Does your pliers have the removable "groove" settings? Only asking because many of the older ones do... if so maybe you can buy the bigger groove (also known as "die-set")? Or you can also just buy the tool online... my favourite store for these kind of things is sewingsupplydepot.com/ No affiliation, I just love the store and the owners are great (ship worldwide)!

Do the grommet tools have to correspond to the size of the grommet?
@LTRLTrendFashnGuru
@LTRLTrendFashnGuru 2 жыл бұрын
100% yes -- most likely if you bought a kit the tools will correspond. If not, then your best option is to measure the inside diameter of the grommet hole, which will give you the size for the tool you will need to buy. Best of luck!... Thanks for watching!

@7:16 = I do not have one of these "tools" nor do I intend on getting one - why TF is it so hard to find an instructional video at how to join one of these eylets together using ONLY household tools, i.e. a hammer?!?!??!

I know my comment is a month after you posted, but you can use rustoleum spray paint. It can be washed, and is designed to be applied to metal.

What size of eyelet/grommet is usually used for corsets?
@LTRLTrendFashnGuru
@LTRLTrendFashnGuru 2 жыл бұрын
Good question, I think that depends on a few factors: 1. your design and what you are going for - as designers we break the "rules" of what should be. 2. the height of the garment - if its short maybe you want to go for a smaller grommet. If the grommets are being placed down the leg of a pant than maybe you want to make them bigger and bolder?! 3. what type of fabric you are using, is it delicate? if so, you may want to use a smaller more understated grommet. if you have heavier fabric than you may want something more industrial (with the larger sized grommet). All of these factors are all based on the look and design you are going for. My suggestion is to go to the store where you can visualise it... bring your garment too and see what fits!! Best of luck!

My eyelet is so short it’s not reaching through all the fabric layers. What should I do? They keep falling out when I lace up the corset
@LTRLTrendFashnGuru
@LTRLTrendFashnGuru Жыл бұрын
Yikes, sorry to hear that... you will need to buy grommets with a longer center post in order to accommodate all those layers. My favourite store for grommets is the Sewing Supply depot (no affiliation) here: sewingsupplydepot.com/search?page=1&q=grommet best of luck!

What about eyelets in puncture proof material? Like for work boots...
@LTRLTrendFashnGuru
@LTRLTrendFashnGuru 3 жыл бұрын
Most likely you would want to get a grommet instead of an eyelet bc grommets have the supportive "washer" piece on the back and therefore more resistant to breaking theough the fabric. Grommets also come in smaller sizers as well, make sure the grommet stem is long enough to go through the layers of fabric for your boots. 😉
