🙋🏼‍♀️ Hello Ariel, I’m a 72 year old woman living in middle Tennessee. I recently found your KZfaq channel and I’m so glad I did. I’m enjoying watching your post cleaning up your amazing house. I’m writing to explain the floors painted on the edges and not in the middle. Back in the 1800’s people had either a loose laid linoleum or an area rug that typically didn’t go to wall to wall so the area not covered was painted. My great grandparents victorian home floors were painted like that. They used a glossy dark burgundy paint and it was beautiful. Take care and continue to have a good time bringing the old girl back to life! Fran

@@mnomadvfx yes, obviously. I’m not saying it’s definitive, it’s really just a theory I had based on what she showed/said about the space, but I do think it’s a plausible explanation (assuming that empty space was at one time a fireplace/chimney that was later taken out, which is admittedly hard to confirm from behind a screen)

Next time you’re at the hardware store get an electrical power sniffer. It has a pointy end that if you bring it next to a live wire it sounds. I’m here to tell you that you can absorb electricity. I’ve done it twice. Once when I was a kid. Once when I thought I had the right circuit off..nope. 😂 It feels like intense shaking inside your own wiring..😂 Love your passion!

Oh yes, good idea! And I know that sensation...I used to live in a ghetto apartment and the rich slumlord (slumlady) had never upgraded the electrical. The fuse box was NOT grounded so changing fuses was terrifying. I had to somehow pull and replace the fuse without touching the box. One time I screwed up and the shock knocked me off the chair I was standing on. Fun times.....

Sink goes where the tub was, leave the throne in that corner, and build a nice big walk-in shower in the secret revealed hidden room area. But the sloping ceiling does add some complication that I may not be properly visualizing. Maybe turn that side into a low closet for linens or other storage?

Old studs like that are super worth keeping, particularly from houses of that age. They tend to be old growth and really strong, so you can do all kinds of things with them, including really nice looking cabinet doors and such. I was a little worried about there being something extra with that non-former-closet-but-still-hidden space stuck in the corner but now it looks like you're in the clear, which is great! I too have found SURPRISE BONUS SPACE and I still have dreams about it regularly so... you might too? xD

I love the sink in your bathroom! I know you have different plans for the sink in your bathroom, but if you're not going to repurpose it in the house maybe you could set it up outside with a hose running to the tap and a bucket to catch the runoff so you can wash your hands off outside and use the water for plants (be careful of soap, some can damage plants). So excited to see what your plans are now that you have extra space.

The key sign of a load bearing wall is the direction of the floor/ ceiling joists above. If they are parallel to the wall you want to remove, they are not load bearing. If they are perpendicular to the wall you want to remove, beware.

EXCEPT when your house is old and has been much DIY’ed over the decades (or centuries here in the UK) by people that didnt know the rules. And yes, you’d think there would be evidence of sinking or shifting or whatever, but sometimes some other element compensates and old houses are often wonky and out of plumb in multiple directions so that doesnt always look suspicious either.
@rupe53
@rupe53 5 ай бұрын
The real clue to a load bearing wall is it's running in the same direction as the roof ridge, or it's got beam / joist splices being supported by the wall. No splices and a span of less that 10 - 12 feet then you are probably ok to pull out the wall.

So this might be a crazy idea, but what if moved your washer/dryer upstairs into the bathroom? More room downstairs and then you also don't have to carry your laundry up and down the stairs. Perfect time to do the move. You can even hide it behind a mirror door or something. 😁
@amandaelizabeth21
@amandaelizabeth21 6 ай бұрын
She would have to add plumbing and electrical to hook it all up and it might not be doable. Most likely, once she does the kitchen, she will probably move the laundry to the back of the house where there is the extension that never got completed and is just extra storage space.

Hey Ariel, You are blessed with so much strength, talent and will. You are putting so much work into the house. It's quite amazing to watch! I would advise you to put much importance into resting and recovering between projects and taking things slow. Our bodies are amazing and are capable of amazing things. But once they reach a burnout, things turn ugly pretty fast. And A. The recovery is long. B. The body never goes back to what it used to be. Take it from someone who pushed her body a little to hard and a little to far without noticing. Once I realised what happened, I was deep in burnout. Much love!

I really love your attitude & willingness to just proceed and figure things out as you go. I often wish my grandfathers or my dad were still living to explain all this to me. They knew & learned from their fathers. I just had a new kitchen faucet put in at a cost of $900 not including the faucet itself. I was shocked. Apparently the 20-year old soddered copper pipes are no longer up to code & the hot & cold connections had to be replaced. I’m done with this nonsense & want to learn to do these things myself. Watching this (somewhat) randomly reminded me of last summer when my family was helping to renovate my grandmother's investment home. There was crawlspaces between the the walls and the roof on the upper level, and there was a sheet of plywood matching the walls used to close off the space since it was only accesible through the closet. She has a cat that will wander, and you may see where this is going. After not seeing the cat for a whole day, we started getting concerned, and we looked for her for days. One of the times some of us were looking for the cat, they saw a cat roaming the field on the plot neighboring us. When they tries to grab the cat, it hissed and ran away, which later turns out it just looked identical to her cat. That night my mom goes to sleep in the guest bedroom and hears meowing, and assumes she is hallucinating due to exhaustion from searching. She still hears meowing in the morning, so we check in the crawlspace, lo and behold she was in the crawlspace for *6* *full* *days* . At most she has eaten a single mouse in the span of the entire week. That cat has used practically all her lives with the adventures she has had in her 15 or so years.

Suggestion for you not to get hit in the face with the floor trim. You know how you used a flat head screwdriver to remove the paneling from the wall, hitting it with the hammer. Well, do that to that floor trim first. Between the wall and trim first. That way it doesn't fly up into your face. Then do the same to under the trim, still using the hammer and screwdriver. To me it works faster and easier than using the wonder-bar. That is how I did it in my home remodels. Great work and I love your home.

Defenestration! 😂 Love that word, and the act is kinda fun. Working smarter, not harder 🙌 What a difference already... Thanks for sharing, it helps me feel less worried about doing my own bathroom. Looking forward to the next update 🕊🇬🇧

Good morning. Since the bathroom was created years after the house was built, it was probably a bedroom to begin with. The little room you have to walk through was created at that time. What is behind the wall in that room? Is it another hidden space? On the slope side of the bathroom, where the slope stops, a storage cabinet would look great there. There is probably space behind the plaster wall that can be accessed to recess the storage cabinet, giving more flexibility. I love the spooky rooms! Upstairs and downstairs. It looks like a new kitchen was in progress of being added. I’m excited just waiting to see what you’re doing next! Your creek is so powerful, you might be able to use it to generate electricity! It would probably be cheaper and easier to set up over solar. And it would not create an eyesore in your yard. Have a great day and an awesome weekend. Sincerely, Fran PS Good idea to keep your location secret, especially if you don’t want 338k fans 😇 to come and see you😁 🤣 🤔 of course that would be a lot of free laborers 😂😊

Just an idea. I had a friend remodel and use his old bathtub outside up against his garden shed as a pool for 1 in the summer. He just puts a stopper in and fills it with the hose. He loves it. You could also use it for a planter, or a small fish pond ect.

It's amazing how much room was just wasted by them boarding up a closet. I can't fathom why they would since it would have made a much better bathroom. Anyway, nice job on the demo. Glad none of that was load bearing, but I can't see why it would have been unless they had to replace a rafter when they installed that closet.
