The funny thing is that as soon as the Sioux Indians got guns and horses from the white man, they exterminated the Arikawas. Most people today are very naïve about the brutality that went on for thousands of years in tribal warfare

I remember in high school years ago we read old documents about settlers in Ohio fighting against Indians. There was a group of 4 or 5 settlers that would wage their own war against Indians during the war of 1812. They would sneak up on a Indian camp, wait till dark and pick off one Indian with their excellent shooting skills. Then melt back into the forest. Wait four or five days and do it again to the same group of Indians. This went on for months with the Indians being unable to fight back. It was a very effective means of waging war.

This happened just north of Mobridge SD and the Island was named Ashley Island. It's now under water as the whole valley was flooded Oahe dam in Pierre. The next year, Colonel Leavenworth came back and picked up 800 Dakota Sioux and kicked the Arikara's ass. There was a monument placed at the site. It's now at the Mobridge museum. Not sure why they put it out in the middle of the prairie? There is now a bay named Leavenworth bay on Lake Oahe north of Mobridge. I'm from Mobridge and had to learn all this on my own as none of it was taught in school.

One must conclude the foolhardy venture of the two Mountain men into the Arikara camp. They had already brokered a deal with the Native tribe yet tensions were still somewhat high. I don't blame the Arikara at all for being upset over the fact the two Mountain men wanted to have intimacies with their women. I would have acted the same way to be honest. Especially as they went in after dark to try to procur sexual favors. That showed they knew it was probably not going to be looked upon with favor. 💪🏻🙏🏻✨

Interestingly, a similar incident happened between the Zulus and Piet Retief's party in South Africa. Relief had been negotiating with the king, Dingane, and suddenly was massacred. A recent south African historian reviewed Zulu oral history and found that one of those in Retief's party had been a "peeping Tom" spying into the Zulu women's homes. Whether that was enough to cause the massacre, I don't know, but it certainly would have created distrust.

The Arikara were well aware of the fur trappers crimes and injustices against other Indigenous groups and it was prudent for them to establish themselves as a strong force not to be abused. If it were not for the two trappers that snuck into the Arikara camp to defile the women, reinforcing the suspicions of the the tribe, then this very well may have ended in a more mutually amicable relationship.

@marcwhittle9810
@marcwhittle9810 Жыл бұрын
@@tommurphree5630 when I use the word 'groups' this is in reference to not only linguistic ethnic groupings within a culture but also admixture of peoples. Within a culture there are usually related ethnic groups that may speak different dialects but from the same linguistic and cultural ancestry. More over a 'group' might be of mixed ethnic peoples of the same linguistic and cultural traditions but also frequently even from mixed cultural/linguistic peoples where various languages are spoken within the context of family and extended families These extended families often had blood relations with various other bands or groups. Many ways this could occur. So called bride capture being one as is documented within the Yanomami, or as recorded among Carib ethnic groups that would raid Taino or Arawakan communities capturing women. These captured women would bring their linguistic heritages and cultural traditions into their new cultural captivity whereby the children would learn in addition to their father's language that of their mother's as well. Polities among Indigenous peoples is well documented and the exchange of women was of common practice. This might allow a band to have access to resource base otherwise denied to them as well as promoting interrelated mutually supportive and defensible groups. Cultures seldom occur in a vacuum.

@@deanpd3402 it's not just the 19th century that Hollywood has botched up. Gotten wrong. They're in the business and making movies, and whatever they can use in their script to make it exciting, and productive at the box office. They don't care about truth. They only want their story heard, sound familiar.

The movie should include the retaliation of the Military. The next year, Colonel Leavenworth came back to avenge Colonel Ashley. He picked up 800 Dakota Sioux in Yankton. They were more than happy to fight Arikara. I read some actual first hand journals of this battle. The Sioux were especially cruel as in they performed a "victory" dance or celebration. One of the warriors put on a bearskin, and went from body to body emulating a bear and taking bites out the the chest of the fallen Arikara.

The clash of European cultures with the tribes in North America was inevitable. The chief reason is that the Europeans brought horses and new technology that gave them an advantage in warfare. The fact that it was an Indian that stole muskets from Jamestown and used them to attract other tribes. The tribes that acquired these things first attacked the ones that did not. This more sharply defined the raiding tribes from the peaceful ones. There were tribes that immediately saw the improvement that the white way of living brought and adapted them or did later. Few people know, for example, that 500 Sioux had taken to farming in Minnesota before the 1862 uprising. They wanted to keep their farming community together and begged the White minister to not flee. But he was pressured to leave by the violence and the farming Sioux were shamed into rejoining the larger, warlike contingent of Sioux, who were one of the greatest of all trading tribes. This is why when General Crook rode out in 1876 as the main force of the Montana Campaign that year, he had 262 Shoshone and Crow allies with him when he encountered the Sioux and Cheyenne at Rosebud Creek. Crook, BTW,. faced the same forces that Custer would face a week later at the Little Bighorn River with far fewer forces, and could not defeat them. The Battle of Rosebud Creek was at best a draw. Crook retreated to resupply, and so Custer, Terry, and Gibbon did not know that Crook and his vital force of 1,2000 would never arrive as planned.

Yes. Smith had quite the reputation, yet he had a poor understanding of native ways. On one of his expeditions he split his camp & took half his men & all their weapons across a river leaving twenty unarmed men behind who got slaughtered by natives. Then in Oregon he pissed off a chief & while he & another man went ahead to explore his whole camp was wiped out. Like Lord Franklin & Captain Ahab, not someone you'd want to follow.

The story is great and the only fitting thing in Mr Dicaprio is the look. The Rickarees are great looser at this time, lost 4/5 of their Tribe in the small pocks epidemic and the Dakota for decades heartily dominated got firearms and grow more powerful. Many Arikara married to Pawnee. Read the book The Renvenant and you get the story of a real badass and I do believe that every mountain man was out of this mold. Are there any sure pictures of the Arikara? Liked from Northern Germany

C’mon man. Vast oversimplification. “Open & explore” should be “dispossess & exterminate.”. I suspect you’ve been privileged in some ways, one being your maleness & (just guessing) your whiteness, to live the life you’ve lived. Multitudes of others haven’t been so fortunate. Be careful about attributing your successes to your character alone.
