Horseshoe Dam is one of my favorites. You were walking under the "Sheep Walk" which was used to herd sheep under the dam spillway. I have kayaked to the upper end of the lake and hiked to Sheep's Bridge. The bridge is worth visiting as well as the hot spring.

Did Coolidge Dam in November 2021 -- darned near bone dry! I liked the presentation of Teddy Roosevelt Dam more -- but just barely. On Coolidge, I loved the railings with the "C" and backwards "C" as in Calvin Coolidge. Drove a service road to get to the face of the dam to see the eagles from below -- well worth it. Pretty decent dam hunter you are!

That's because the news people are morons. They talk "gallons", because that is all their tiny brains can comprehend, but in the Water Bidness, it's always "acre feet". Kinda like "gallons" vs. barrels (42 gallons) in the Oil Bidness. FYI - Lake Mead's capacity at Full Pool is 26 million acre feet. Powell is 24 million AF.

For the record, as a member of the public, you CANNOT drive across Horseshoe dam. There's a gate blocking the way. What he saw here were likely some dam maintenance engineers! 😉Or perhaps local ranchers who have express access. One of the really interesting thing about this dam is seeing the effectual casting marks from the wooden forms used to create the dam. They don't do things like that anymore! That video shows maybe 1000-1500 CFS flowing over the dam. Here's a video I took a few years back with a far greater volume... kzfaq.info66i71Hjw5Mc?feature=share The purpose of this dam is strictly flood control of the Verde River. It fills in the winter and spring and is drawn down during the summer. It supplies Bartlett Lake downstream which then releases water to be used by the tribes and for the canal system in Mesa and Phoenix (via Granite Reef diversion dam) which originally supplied farmers but also supplies some municipal drinking water as well, IIRC.

For many years driving across the skirt of the dam was the only way to go hunting or for the ranchers to run their animals. Up stream and up a small draw is a natural spring where Bootleggers had a still back in the 1920's. I was taken there by one of the workers back 50 years or so when I was a young boy. Walk, horse or mule travel only. It is remote.

"It was an important day in the history of the town," Joseph Reed Chesley said. The day of the dedication, March 4, 1930, Coolidge Dam corralled little water. Speaker Will Rogers quipped that if he owned the reservoir he'd "mow it." This has long been a local legend. Search for ARIZONA MEMORY PROJECT. I also have some pics of some locals that drove their jetskis up from Bartlett (dragging them in some places) all the way to the dam to ride in the tide pool below the dam. I think this was back in 2003/2004 time frame, and was quite an adventure, as the current coming down was a good 5mph or faster through some parts from Horseshoe into Bartlett. I was not part of the group.

The 101 and 202 where you can do 5mph over the speed limit and get passed like you just threw out a anchor from your trunk or pickup bed. I'm from the east coast and big cities are like this but, not so careless. Rarely do you see people going the wrong way but, it's normal here. I'm gonna check out the Coolidge dam and go for a dip when it's 110 degrees

San Carlos reservoir has only been full, I think, twice in its history. It was originally designed with power generation which was il considered, given the nature of the ebb and flow of the reservoir, and hasn't been in operation for decades. Part of the reason it is never full is because of all the upstream dams. What this dams primary purpose is is to provide the tribes downstream (Pima and Maricopa, primarily) tribe with irrigation water. This, it was built, is owned, and operated by the Bureau of Indian Affairs. That is done, in part, with the diversion dam just outside Florence Arizona at the end of, unsurprisingly, Diversion Dam Road, along which, you can see some interesting structures. However, the road is fenced off well over a mile from the dam itself, so you can't actually get to it without trespassing on government land, something I don't recommend. The dam was designed in classic "Neo-gothic" style, hence the Eagles and the geometric surfaces next to the spillways. The bridges over the washes and so on approaching the dam are also original to the construction. You CAN drive around the reservoir and it can be worth the trip. Just know that to get to the dam itself, you have to do a bit of rural driving and it'll take you about half an hour after you leave US 60. You are also prominently reminded that you are on reservation land, so behave yourselves accordingly. As to the dam's stability, Recall that it is usually at LESS than 20% capacity, so it isn't really in any danger of collapse. What should worry people is if there is ever a serious inflow of water again, though such an inflow has not occurred in 30 years.
