Many of the roots of modern horror, weird fiction and dark fantasy can be found in pulp magazines of the early 20th century such as Weird Tales. Renowned authors such as Clark Ashton Smith, Robert E. Howard, Ray Bradbury, Fritz Leiber, Robert Bloch, and H.P. Lovecraft wrote dark and strange tales for the pulps that likely would have faded into obscurity without the tireless efforts of authors Donald Wandrei and August Derleth to publish them in hardcover and bring them to a wider audience through Arkham House Publishers, the tiny company they formed. This is an historical overview of Arkham House and its influence on the horror, science fiction and dark fantasy genres over a period of 70 years.
