A complete playthrough of American Sammy's 1990 NES game, Arkista's Ring.
Check out the review and media (including soundtrack, screenshots, etc.) at www.nintendocomplete.com/arkis...
This video shows all four rounds of the game played through. The final set made me want to break a controller until I figured it out/stumbled my way through somehow. Good game, at least up until around stage 80 or 90. Then good luck.
On an unrelated note, how did Sammy cram so much religious iconography into this game and get it past the Nintendo censor board? I mean, you heal at a gravestone with a massive cross on it.

This was one of the first NES games that I owned after the initial Mario/Duck Hunt pack-in, and I loved it. I didn't even mind that the game asked you to beat it FOUR times in a row, with progressively harder difficulty, to get the "real ending". What I DID mind, however, was the so-called "real ending", which as everyone can see, was one black screen with a couple lines of text. Even a little kid, I felt thoroughly cheated by that, after all the time and effort I put in to get there. Even just ONE picture, with a bit more text and the fuckin' title theme playing, would have felt like SOME kind of "Ending", would have been more acceptable. I still love this game, it's easily in the Top 50 on NES for me. But that "ending" was a major dick move.

I got this game on sale at a local department store when I was tiny, and beating it was one of the major parts of my childhood. I went through all four loops over several days, and struggled mightily through the entire thing. When I finally beat the last shogun and got to the ending screen, even as a kid I expected something more than two lines of text. I was so pissed off that it has stuck with me to this day as one of the biggest disappointments in gaming in the NES. After I finished it, I never played it again, and traded it away later. Good riddance. It's good to see that someone else felt similarly about the ending as I did.

This game has a reason to be preserved for historic significance. They fit a hige game on very little memory space. 34.6kb made this. Not even 1/30th of a megabyte.

Christine should have taken her clothes off the faster you beat all 125 levels, sort of like in Metroid. Something for the trouble. I got stuck on level 92 because I didn't have any ninja stunners, at that point I had all the items and armors and still died in about 3 seconds

I remember this game. The cover of the box was almost mesmerizing. The music too was so catchy. I remember seeing the 125 levels and thought it was mind blowing. For some reason for the longest time, I misremembered the name of it being "Master Ring". Not sure why...

Though it's maddeningly unfair at the end, most of the game is pretty fun and surprisingly not repetitive. Make sure to check out my review, linked in the description! Does anyone else remember how the Video Power (that let the kids in the final round go on a free-for-all, grabbing all the games they can hold!?!?!?!) show seemed to always give this away as a prize. How did they end up with a case of Arkista's Ring cartridges? My mind still boggles to this day.

This music will get stuck in your head! when I worked retail I would hum this at work and it got on my nerves. Finally after coming home I loaded the song and said "I hate myself" such a fun little gem!

+TheDemoniusX Lmao ikr! Like certain two and three second ditties 'n jingles that you want to hear over and over again ha-ha. I loved sound tests for that exact reason :). The first ones that come to mind for me is the noise when you die in the GB Kid Icarus and the Item noise from Ys III/Super Metroid (since they're virtually identical). Maybe I ought to compile a video for just little incidental themes and flourishes like that!

Grrr! now that you brought it up The dragon quest/warrior Level up jingle and Lagoon "item recieved" are NOW in my head. Thanks alot!! I approve of the idea though and would like to see a vid of those "jingles" there is a game soundtrack that comes to mind that used to drive me bat shit crazy and that was "Ninja Crusaders" for the NES. which had a loopy soundtrack, some tunes are so bad that I'll hum them while grocery shopping! The castle stage was the worst >_

this game... man it left an impression on me, I remember my friend got an NES from her aunt and invited me to play and after a week of playing several games we stopped at this one and we were simply hooked We played every day, I was 9 years old at the time. Last year something reminded me of him and I've been looking for him for a year, when I found this video I just started crying, an adult of 18 years of crying over a NES game, I don't think I was the only one or the first, I really love this game, thanks for reminding me of it

I bought this game used at a video store that was looking to get rid of its stock of NES games it no longer wanted to make room for based ENTIRELY on the box (or rather STICKER) art. Even as an avid Nintendo Power reader I had never even heard of it, but anything with that particular style that I would later realize was anime fascinated me so I took a chance on it thinking it might be like Zelda or Dragon Warrior. Boy, was I disappointed! This same exact scenario also applies to my experience with King's Knight.

Considering the amount of unused stuff that had been found within the game & generally how outdated the game was by 1991, I could imagine that this was a game once scheduled for a release in Japan as an action RPG, but was scrapped, only for American Sammy to release some prototype version of the game onto US store shelves presumably 3 years after the game's Japanese released was cancelled(as in, it would've released in Japan in 1988). The version we got was probably a 55% complete prototype & perhaps there exist other builds of the game that were more complete as well as the original Japanese version of this particular build?

Nintendo is sitting on a gold mine. Release a Nes and Snes with built in small hard drives with every game released for each system. Sell them for a couple hundred bucks and every retro gamer would buy one. Nes classic is a tease at best. I’m stuck to buying a Nes and a fan made multicart.

Religious Iconography? Just look at Nintendo's Hypocrisy. The Legend of Zelda: Both the regular shield and Magic Shield have Crosses them. In the uncut version, the Magic Book is actually a Bible. Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link The Graveyard is littered with crosses, not to mention one of the in-game items that you get is a Cross which is needed to see what can't be seen. Then later on with The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time: things like The Bottom of the Well and the Shadow Temple. In Shadowgate, the game has gruesome deathtraps, although stated in text only. There is also a Hellhound(Yes, even the game states it uncensored)in the game that can only be stopped by Holy Water(Even the game states that uncensored too).
