I noticed several people asking about the difference between these and the regular metallic "glitter" set from them. These pigments are not bound to the mica, so they work just like normal watercolors with a tiny bit of ultra-fine silver glitter residue left over as you paint. It's much more separate than the color coated mica of the normal sets which make everything a homogeneous mixture. This set is mostly regular watercolor, with just a touch of finely ground silver glitter residue in each color. The glitter effect does not dominate, because it is not bound to the color the same way as their usual mica glitter/pearlescent/metallics. Think of their usual metallics like silver plating on jewelry, they coat the shiny mica with a pigment color. In their other set the pearlescent mica metallic effect is thoroughly mixed. The pearlescent effect does not separate back into clearly defined color AND sparkle, but rather just gives an all around pearlescent effect to each color. In contrast, this new phosphorescent/hint of glitter is not bound to each other, so it separates into just tiny pools of glitter with clearly defined separate color. Hope that helps :)

The beginning part of the video involving your daughter is just adorable. My daughter gave me the other Paul Ruben's glitter set as a thank you gift a few months ago. She runs her own very successful indie nail polish business and loves to use the glitters and micas in her polish so the glitter set really spoke to her. I haven't used them yet since I don't really know how or what I would use them for. I do paint greeting cards for my family for birthdays and Christmas so that's probably what they will get used for. They are very glittery. Thanks for sharing this review with us. I always enjoy watching. You have such a calming and soothing voice and way about you that it's almost therapeutic.

I would imagine they react to black lights not glow in the dark
@KimberlyCrick

I think that they meant it has light reflecting properties because of the fine silver glitter effect, a bit like a shiny mirror. It's a translation issue, as Paul Rubens often uses odd words when they translate things from Chinese to English. I do not believe these glow or react to black light.

I was about to comment how the name is misleading as phosphorescent emits light on it's own and is what is used in all "glow in the dark" [not to be confused with dayglo] items that allow them to glow after being exposed to light.
@Ross1950art
@Ross1950art 4 жыл бұрын
Phosphorescent means that they glow under a blacklight, like a psychedelic poster. Luminescent is when the paint emits light in the dark, like a wristwatch face. Most paints called 'Opus' or 'Hot pink'' or 'Opera' or 'Opera rose' are phosphorescent. Daniel Smith's 'Iridescent blue silver' is somewhat phosphorescent. That's about all I've found that are phosphorous. The colors are rather fugitive also.

@@Ross1950art phosphorescent merely means that the material slowly re-emits energy it absorbed. Luminous paint can be phosphorescent, fluorescent, or radioluminescent. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luminous_paint

I purchased this mainly for the tin. But I was pleasantly surprised with the paints. I painted a small winter scene with them and it was a lovely effect. I got them on sale at $37 and the case, if purchased alone, was more than that. I moved my nicer paints to the Rubens tin. This did require some sticky tac as my winsor newton professional pans were a tiny bit smaller. I prepped the mixing areas and once I did the beading went away. Overall I am very pleased especially since I caught it on sale.

I just got the metallic set of 12. No layering with those. They mix well, but when trying to layer, the earlier color is removed. The amount of mica in your water when rinsing is huge, so separate your water glasses to avoid contamination with regular paints. Definitely more for small amounts of highlighting. Had I known, I probably would have purchased a set of 12 of the set you are reviewing on this video. Thank you for all you do here. 😎

These watercolors are pretty neat! I love the hues included in the set, but also the shimmery effect. I'm a person that (involuntarily) ends up with saturated paintings because I build too much. But they would give a nice touch to my paintings!!!! If I'll be able to afford them in the future I will definitely buy them! (I'm currently using winsor and newton watercolors, both the cotman and the professional versions. I made myself a palette mixing the various colors they offer)

i just purchased the traditional 48 pan Paul Reuben and i like that there is another 24 pan option that isn't metallic or traditional. it has some difference in effect, and the packaging alone is to die for. i was torn when buying the 48 over the 24 original pan bc i wanted all the colors but also liked the smaller case. this set is perfect in that way. different enough and not too big to add to my collection

I finally received my blue set from Amazon today after Kimberly and your videos since I was still not clear on the difference between this set and Paul Ruben's metallic set which I also have. After the swatching, I realized what both you meant. I agree the paints are more like normal watercolor set with just tiny sparkling particles. They are still transparent and the sparkles are subtle - I actually like its unique effect. I suppose one can always mix normal paint with some mica but it is nice to have the paint already-made :)

I would buy them, the subtle glitter effect would work really well with the type of illustrations I want to make (fantasy/children's book type) I don't use metallic paints but I do like them sometimes. @@kathyhackney7950 yeah, it's a lot of trial an error. I've actually changed my opinion on this in a span of a year lol, I think it depends largely on the style of the work. Thanks for your review. I use PR paints myself over my high-end paints for the purpose of economy. I have to dab away and rinse off too much pigment with my techniques to use DS and Sennelier alone. I am in my 3rd year of art, and I don't want my supplies to ever feel "wasted." I bought the 2 box tube sets for myself for xmas, and I poured 2 palettes, 36 and 24 and am very pleased with the way they handle. I also purchased Arteza 60 Mica set, so I never need to buy any art or cosmetic supply only because it shimmers. I have made the most freeing of choices, in the end. I do not yet sell my work, so the paints are almost overkilling in quality for sketchbooks and practices even. I LOVE Lightwish Pretty Excellent brand for sketching and travel. I mean I like them a LOT. I highly recommend PR paints

The more I look at it the more the corally shade you got and used toward the end ( around 14:50-15:00) is really beautiful. Overall the pinkish reddish shades are also looking better here than in the regular set that I possess and it has beautiful colorful and rich reds, shades of reds that I like but here it's different, more soft, more peach, mauve, coral more luminous. Even the blues and the greens, more rich here I think for the blues, have that softer, luminous look to them compared to the regular set. Sad that's it's more expensive. But the tube set you presented once is more interesting to me. However that blue pallet... Hum... It's pretty. Very pretty.

I love what you did with them and yes you can see the difference in the eyes where you have layered ,as his eyes are his focal point and the slight shimmer ads to this too 😀

I wonder if they would look good on black paper? Some other phosphorescent paints show well on darker paper?? These look really pretty and interesting swatched! Beautiful work as always!

Very, very nice face! I wouldn't have any use for glittery WC, but I do own the small set of P Rubens metallics, as I think they are lovely. However, I don't use them, so far. Just want them, & wish I had ordered the larger (24) pan set instead.

It is quite a classic palette design and a Chinese copy of the hand made heavyweight tins made in Europe. The small boxes in which some Schminke sets come work on the same principle. I think these paints are for people making original art to sell, though if you don't mind losing the mica effect then I suppose they will print up well enough. I think maybe the names have been put through a digital translator rather than checked with a fluent English speaker. The texture on the box looks interesting. I have european and chinese boxes like this the latter are slightly lighter weight and not enamelled so thickly, but are a great deal less expensive to buy. You painting is lovely and the colours look nice, but on the whole I find the box more interesting than the paint and your work more interesting than both!

I'm pretty annoyed by this deceitful "phosphorescent" word here. Glittery and phosphorescent are not synonyms. Do these colors shine in the dark? If not, they are not phosphorescent.

Maybe a mistake in translation. Saw another video about these, perhaps they didn’t mean phosphorescent but meant to refer to the interference colors in the set
