"Officer Obie" (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Obanhein) was an actual cop in Stockbridge MA, and when Arlo made a movie based on the song "Alice's Restaurant" he insisted on playing himself and not letting an actor play his part. "I'd rather portray myself as a fool than have someone else do it." Working on the movie brought him and Arlo together to where they were fast friends up until Officer Obanhein passed away. Leave it to Arlo to call out the absurd in all of the War on Drugs/Hippies/Communists/whatever, and still respect the men and women having to actually fight the 'War'.

A long time ago, I was driving an Army truck in Vietnam and it broke down. Me and Joe, the shotgun rider, sat on the long, dirt road back to back, guarding north and south and we got really bored, so we smoked one and sang the worst version of Alice's Restaurant in two-part disharmony until the VC came, whereby we had to abruptly end the song and run in the opposite direction.

You're entirely welcome and, as a former County narc, may I thank you? This reminded me of a time my partner and I were working a certain motor cycle gangs hangout. We'd been, "making buys" there long enough so we didn't need a CI (confidential informant.) One night we were at the bar when two dudes came in and we could tell they were casing the joint, we could also tell by their haircuts and shiney shoes that they were either State or Federal narcs. After about fifteen minutes, they made their way over to the bar and zero'd in on me and my partner, looking for thier first buy. We played along with them for a couple of hours, letting them buy us drinks. We finally got bored with them, and met them in the parking lot, where we signaled to our backup team to find the other guys backup team, which didn't take long. When they found out we "wasted" their night they were really pissed, but we thought it was funny.

yes Arlo is a really funny guy, and a great storyteller, like his dad. I saw him once and he told this hilarious story of how Jimmy Carter's son told him that he found his record "Alice's Restaurant" among Richard Nixon's record collection! Arlo then realizes that the length of that song was exactly the same length of the incriminating audio tape that Nixon erased during the Watergate Scandal, and hypothesized that Nixon secretly loved his song, but couldn't let anyone find out, so he erased it when he had to turn his tapes over!
@klmullins657 жыл бұрын
He also told this hilarious story about playing a folk festival in Russia with Pete Seeger...and after Pete sang pretty much EVERY folk song that Arlo knew of, he calls Arlo up to the mic..."why don't YOU sing us one now, Arlo??" Arlo said he drew a complete blank! Lol ...so he sang "that great folk song by Elvis Presley"..."I Cant Help Falling in Love"....Pete wasnt happy at first, but warmed up to it after hearing 10s of thousands of people singing along

Hilarious and so is Arlo. He bought the church from Alice's Restaurant and lives 1/2 the year near there in MA. Every other year he performs in Keene, NH and occasionally in Brattleboro. Living in southeastern VT, he was the first concert that I took my daughters to. My granddaughter is 9 and has been to 4 of his concerts. At the last one, she dressed in her Zebra Halloween dress and leggings and was all set to go up on stage with him and sing; then she realized we were sitting in the balcony, so she just sang along with him.
