I think about it this way, arm pump occurs when you exert too much energy compared to the blood circulation through your muscle. Since muscles are built for dynamic motion and not static hold (climbing, mx, etc) it's all about decreasing the strain and increasing blood circulation. Here are my tips based on my climbing and enduro background, and importantly in the order that I think you should focus on them: # Before riding: 1. 10-15 minutes warm up, the body increases blood circulation in the entire body during warm up no matter how you do it but you need to get your heart rate up, 2. Stretch before start # During riding: 1. actively think/learn to ride with as loose grip as possible, there are very few times you need to use brute force, (focus on this) 2. grip with your knees, (focus on this) 3. when it's possible sit a moment longer out of corners (as AJ mentioned), 4. if you can loosen/release the grip at any point during race, flex your fingers a couple of times and possibly stretch (as AJ mentioned, although I usually think that takes more time and is much harder to achieve, I don't jump as long as AJ :). ) # At home 1. Remember to stretch from time to time to keep that muscle lean and loose, 2. Increase blood circulation by physical manipulation of the muscle like massage or place a tennis ball on a table and roll your arm up and down or Graston or whater, just manipulate it and increase blood circulation through it. But remember to always work towards your heart, blood needs help to get back to the heart! It worked for me, good luck! :)

AJ something that I found that helped was simply putting a gripper seat cover on my bike so it glued my butt to the seat. With a stock cover even if I put my chest on the bars out of a corner, the power of my 450 slid me to the back fender. I realise that footwork is a factor but I'm in my 30s and lazy lol. If I was going to continue to race I would also get the fitted frame tape. Yes it will destroy your gear but it helps to keep up with the power of the bike. Also I take enduralyte extremes from hammer products. It gives you electrolytes, sodium, and potassium in pill form. It really really helps my stamina and endurance on the bicycle. Just throwing that out there to help other riders. 🍻

I cut my own frame grip tape. I put it on every surface I make contact with. Hardware stores often sell it. The grey stuff is more rubbery then the sandpaper like black stuff. It wont mess up your gear. Below is what I use. www.acehardware.com/departments/home-and-decor/kitchen-utensils-and-gadgets/anti-slip-tape/64175

Try using something to relieve the tension when you have to grip something very hard. Maybe use straps or something like that. I’ve had a problem with arm pump, the one time that I did was because I was doing a lot of CrossFit and therefore I was training my grip strength. Started using straps and I’ve had a problem again.

Thanks for the straight talk. Also, encouraging just to know someone at your level deals with this as well. Your surgery experience and having zero arm pump for a while afterward is evidence that this is mostly physiological since your diet and riding technique were irrelevant at that time.

I used to get the leg equivalent of arm pump when running - known as compartment syndrome. The muscles along my shin would become extremely taught - rigid to the touch, like they were under pressure, just a short way into my run. This would be soon followed by pain in my lower legs which would become so severe I simply could not continue to run. The solution I found was adopting a different running style - I now run on the balls of my feet (and run faster but shorter distances). On the bike, I don't have problems with arm pump - as long as I am mindful of gripping with my legs (toe in helps), and consciously being light with my hands on the bars. I think to myself that I am guiding the bars, rather than gripping them. Recently though I suddenly started to get an arm pump problem. I'd started wearing 'over-the-sleeve' style elbow guards, which have an elastic material which helps to hold them in place. I was getting arm pump badly within a few laps of the first moto. Nothing had changed in my riding style or body position at all and I couldn't figure out why it had suddenly started happening. It wasn't until a few weeks later when I came in to the pits after a moto and realised happily that I was arm-pump free, that I clicked - that day I had forgotten to put on my elbow guards. I realised that the elasticated sleeve of the elbow guards was restricting the blood flow in my forearms. So in my case, the arm pump was due to an external restriction to blood flow.

Great video, I feel like there's different variations of armpump. Because my hands actually cramp up and go numb not so much the forearm muscle when I ride. When I was younger and gunho about trying to win and be the next best it was really bad and ten years ago there wasn't much info on it. But I've learned and accepted the fact the ONLY way to not have arm pump is to ride ride ride. Muscles eventually catch up to the stress it's under and adapt to it. Only riding over time consistently every other day will eliminate it. If you ride once a week or even less like me it's never gonna go away. But letting go of the bars and using the legs and knees helps alot, I try and ride so loose with my hands that im barely at all even touching the bars. Or at least I try too but doesn't always go that way lol. That will help delay the effect a few laps but being the calmest you can be and relaxed helps the most too. Any type of anxiety or pressure might as well go for the start then accept the fate lol

I’m just getting into moto.. I’m coming over from the road racing world. I generally get crazy arm pump in only my right forearm from the heavy breaking zones that we experience.. but only in my first race of the day.. and for awhile I tried everything to get it to go away.. but I think it’s just from being so anxious for that first race... and now that you mentioned the breathing while riding I bet I don’t barely breath for the first 2 laps so definitely have to make a mental note of that for next time.

Good video , great topic, and thanks for the experience of a pro! This topic certainly is fascinating and it makes me wonder... So I started thinking down this rabbit hole... This would be an awesome test to setup...compare riding styles and maybe correlate riding styles to arm pump.... You would need an engineer or tech to install strain gauges to the handle bars. Maybe this is something handlebars manufacturers already do? Or have done in the past? Or may have engineers that would know how to do it. I'm sure there are some smart ones in your audience right now?! You would need to find two guys with roughly the same riding skill level. One guy should normally suffer bad arm pump, and the other guy should never have any, or have very little complaints about arm pump. Then the guys ride the same bike on the same track with same lap times as much as possible. . . One then the other, not at the same time. While they're riding you would record the strain gauges data. Once they're done riding , analyze on the data. Analyzing this data will tell you who applies more force to the handlebars throughout the laps. You could say that if one person applies much more or less force that they have a different riding style. Graph strain versus time. ( the integral of the strain above zero, for the average positive strain would be something like total pulling energy used) (The integral of the strain below zero, or the average of only the negative strain would be something like total pushing energy used) You may find that after testing 10 or 20 or more riders that those that apply more force on the handlebars have more complaints about arm pump? Or you may find that those that apply more force to the handlebars have less complaints about arm pump? Or you may find no correlation in the data at all, but take pride in putting forth some great effort in finding the solution! Certainly would be interesting to see the data! If you could prove that it was somehow more related to riding style, maybe you could cater a product to meet or help correct that riding style? If you can't develop a product to help with arm pump but you have a test proving that it has more to do with riding style, then you are training becomes that much more valuable because you can help train someone to get less armp. (Technically you're actually recording the strain, which is just micro stretching and shrinking, or bending of the handlebars, but this directly correlates with an applied force to the handlebars) Love the videos, keep it up!

Great Video! For me, the toes turned has been a game changer. At 6'5", holding on to the bike more with my toothpick legs has helped preserve my arms and I enjoy the ride much more. Still get arm pump, but it isn't as severe. I also have an easier time regripping. Aside from trying a Compex unit for warm up and recovery (experimenting), I plan on seeing the effectiveness of KT tape. In theory, KT tape should help increase blood flow. Will it allow blood in and OUT better?

Hi AJ, in my experience arm pump was something I had to struggle with in the past. I started paying attention to different "ingredients" that mixed together could cause arm pump; unfortunately I didn't have the chance to having a teacher as good as you so, during the last 30 years I learnt by try-and-error what I had to do or stay away...and you listed all that things in this video. Gym is not friend of your forearms: keep them lean; Warm up your body (that includes your forearms) at the beginning of your ride: that will affect -especially in cold conditions- your whole day. . Grab your handlebar but don't bend it nor squeeze your grips! Save your energies for rough parts of the track. Ride your bike with your entire body; that means using your legs to grab your bike and your chest in other conditions (accelerating/ breaking)... Thank you AJ for your videos: I always find 2 or 3 things at least, that I don't pay attention enough!

I just got back into racing a couple years ago, im 50. I never got arm pump as a kid or teen, but in my late 40s I struggled. I agree its not a potassium thing and its not a sodium thing, it could be if we were very deficient, but most of us eat well. Remember that sodium is a vasoconstrictor and the body will pee off excess sodium dehydrating a body. Nicotine is vasoconstrictor, so for smokers that suffer, if you can can quit you may see marked improvement. Energy drinks and large amounts of caffeine can also cause vasoconstriction. We hear all the time seat time will help and I agree. The pros, like it was mentioned in the video, are getting hours a week in riding and for many of us we are only getting a few hours a month on the bike. So, we have to do something else to eliminate or at least stave off the arm pump during our 1 or 2 Sundays at the track in a month. Here is what I did/do and it worked well for me. I have a pretty rigorous cardio program. I run 3 miles 5-6 times a week then do a 6 miles bike ride after the run, this takes me about 40 minutes. I push to get my heart rate up in the 150s for most of that period then at the end of my run I push to get my heart rate up in the high 170s to 180 for about 3 minutes. After that I do a quick light weight high rep workout or simply push ups, sit ups , and planks. This I only do for about 10-15 minutes. I drive an hour for work and I use one of those hand grip things you can get online. This is where I disagree slightly. I agree we are not trying to build Popeye forearms, but regular exercising muscles builds endurance. Now, I dont squeeze this thing for an hour in the morning and an hour at night. I just use it for 10-15 minutes alternating hands. I dont use it to muscle failure, but I do get a little arm pump from it. Then I stretch like hell and use it some more. Finally on race day I start hydrating well a couple days before, I pop a couple daily multivitamins that morning, and eat a small breakfast of fruit. Nothing will help if we are using good body mechanics and position on the bike, and I am no expert rider either, but I dont struggle nearly as bad as I used to.

I think stretching is very important, but stretching both groups of muscles. Grab your fingers with arm straight, and pull back, AND alternate with the opposite stretch, where you make a fist, and pull the fist down with the other hand. Hold the position/tension, and give it time to stretch. Do this before riding, after riding, and even daily when you are not riding. Another thing I recommend is that therapy approach with the metal device. I use an all stainless steel butter knife, where the handle has rounded enough edges where it works well. I put lotion to make it slippery, and work the area with short strokes and long strokes, and in both directions. I used this technique in the past to help me get over tennis elbow.

Good video. One thing you said you don't do that would help prevent arm pump if you did, was not using the 4Arm Strong daily. Because the process expands fascia, you have to use it daily to keep the fascia expanded. Using it a couple times per week, or just when you ride will in fact only help "a little" as you said. It will help immensely if you use it daily. Also, arm pump isn't caused because blood isn't escaping the forearm compartment, arm pump is simply muscle pump in your forearms. The blood flows in to protect your muscles from injury and won't flow back out until you are done producing the energy in the area. The cream works to prevent lactic acid, which can cause similar symptoms, but isn't arm pump. The vast majority of people that don't get arm pump simply aren't fast enough or pushing themselves enough. The more energy required to push it, the more blood that attracts to the area. Remember when Tomac got arm pump for the first time a few years ago in Anaheim? It happened because it was the first time he was pushed so hard by Roczen. They called me for my opinion because they didn't understand. I told them, Eli found his limit when Kenny caused him to push it harder than he has had to in the past.

Great content love it, in my experience its more complicated than just strong and weak forearms its misleading and scares people from weights and actual strength training, its more so to do with nervous system, isolation vs compound exercises and how they recruit with the rest of the body, you cant get a stronger deadlift without also gaining stronger grip strength however in my experience this doesn't create armpump, but repeated bicep curls for the girls ... now we have arm pump.

I started exercising my forearms (dead hangs, finger extensions, wrist curls) and it was a night and day difference for me. My forearms now last twice as long on the track. I'm surprised to hear you say that strengthening your forearms is the wrong way to go when it undeniably helped me a whole lot. Perhaps what I was experiencing wasn't arm pump? (stiff forearms arms, difficult to move/feel fingers). I also only ride a few times a month, and I assume things are different at a higher level. Another thing on the dietary side that helped me a little bit was supplementing nitric oxide boosters before riding (beet juice, l-citrulline) which can help increase blood flow. Most pre-workout contains these types of supplements.

Strengthening your forearms does not lead directly to arm pump and as you have found out, that type of training has helped you. Improving grip strength really is key to helping but their is no 100% cure to eliminate AP.

if strengthening your grip increased you muscle mass in your forearm it would be counterproductive, my body unfortunately only wants to add muscle if i did the same thing it would amplify my forearm pump 10x

Glad you said there’s no cure. However, I would argue that weak forearms is not the answer. Mobility like you state is very important especially with contractile length because most everything Moto guys do promotes shortening of the muscle so any strength training around forearm should focus on eccentric volume and long duration isometrics in a maximal muscle length. Then working on maximal length eccentric deficits like in FRC methods. The shortened length of muscle, plus long duration iso’s (gripping the bike) causes a localized lactic and a-lactic effect although globally it’s aerobic response. The lactate efficiency you have or don’t have will impact those clearance rates (lactate retention training) and the high amplitude and high frequency vibration from the bike directly and the absorption of braking bumps etc will cause an over excited state in the muscles introducing further muscle tetanus (vibration plate training). Finally shoulder and wrist instability will lead to poor patterning in addition to other factors and will cause over reliance upon your grip additionally and not transfer properly through your body. The effect is multifaceted and any improvement I would say should come from a long period of isolated work. However years of not properly training can definitely induce permanent adaptations that result in you needing the surgery and other neuromuscular effects that can be very difficult to untrained without long periods off the bike. Now I’ll let you all criticize me for throwing out some science here ( by the way this whole thing could be an entire hour long presentation)

When I get arm pump I can’t use my front brake because it’s to painful to use it and I constantly get whiskey throttle and my hands slip off my bars. But lately I’ve been using deep heat on my forearms and it numbs the pain so I can now use my brake so if you haven’t try deep heat

What about wearing an elastic / compression type sleeve on your arm. I haven't tried it and it sounds like the wrong thing but consider your arms expand until they hit their limit and you get pump. But if you had elastic to squeeze out the blood in the little gaps that the muscle is not flexed maybe it will keep the muscle more empty?

There are foods that reduce lactic acid... Aj, try to check out stuff at GMC for lactic acid battle. Body builders get pump too but there are some great products. I used to use pre work out before riding, muscle tech nano vapor. Pretty sure it's rare now it was powerful stuff also let the body perform at a noticeable 30-40 percent more. It opens your veins for blood flow as well very noticeably. Look that direction bro.

@@AjCatanzaro Fuck. You have no idea how helpful this is. I've gone to riding schools. Done one on one private lessons. Etc. The arm pump just comes on. I've tried slowing down. Riding slower pace in the thoughts that I'm tensing up due to being nervous about something going wrong at that faster pace. But it made no difference. I just get arm that doesn't come on as fast. I try to explain to people. But they all think it's me or the bike. But hearing you talk about it proves that even if you're super experienced with pro level riding. It can still be an issue. Presumably genetic. Welp. I'm gonna buy the gua-sha blade. Got a juicer. So gonna try a fruits and vegetables juice. Not Caffeine. And loading up on liquid i.v. the night before and morning of. Heh I wrote that just before I saw the gwasha or whatever you called. I've used a similar tool (rock blade) but with way more pressure. If you can get it to scrape deep and really get into the muscle deep, might give you similar but longer lasting flexibility in the forearm.

When it comes to arm pump I don't think any sport comes close to rock climbing. Was climbing for 10 years before i ever sat on a bike. My worst debilitating case of moto pump doesn't even come close to a climbing pumpout. Like in a lot of sports the balance between applied strength and technique is a crucial line. The more you apply strength the more potential for technique to break down. If you've ever done competitive rowing or played golf you can relate. Where the next level is at is being able to maintain technique while applying max strength. A pro golfer will swing the same at full strength as at half. A recreational golfer might have a nice swing but it will fall apart when trying to out distance buddies. In climbing, technique is everything. This is why a soccer mom can climb stuff way more advanced then you. There are times however where there is no other option, for your ability, technique and mental bag of tricks, but to hold on and grunt through a section. Being 500' off the ground and 30' above the last point your line is anchored to is pretty good motivator to hold on. You fall you could literally die so you will bear way more pain before giving up. Sometimes you don't even give up, your hand will let go on its own as you loose all control over it. Breathing and technique (footwork) is key for climbing. At 50 and getting on a motocross track for the first time 4 years ago, I'm finding the same to be true. In the case of moto footwork is like holding on with your legs. The more you try to muscle the bike the worse your technique will get. Sometimes unfortunately you just have to grunt through a section.

Being a fabricator by nature the moment I got on a bike I realized most are designed poorly for holding on with your legs. I made my own side bumps out of eva foam with grip tape over. I adhere them with 3M VHB right behind where your boots will be when ridding. I started with large aggressive ones and slowly made smaller versions the better I got. Depending on how you shape them they are a bit more forgiving then the stegpegs. In the 4x4 world if something doesnt work for you, you cut and weld until it does. I was amazed at how the moto world has such a restrictive bolt-on midset.
