Heraldo de Madrid: 20 June 1906 The Armada Resucitada (Cont’d) The San Pedro Apóstol class of battleships were designed to replace the two ship Argonauta class battleships. Designed in response to rising tensions in Europe, and an active war against Austro-Hungary, the class had standard beam and draft, and a target displacement of 16,500 tons. Though small, the ships would be armed with three twin 12”/40 mark 3 gun turrets, two super firing forward and one aft in an ABY configuration, having 14” face, 3” top, and 14” barbette armor with flash fire III protection, enhanced reloading, and advanced hydraulic turning engines which are aimed with the use of a coincidence II range finder. The class also carries fourteen mark 3 3”/35 quick firing guns in casemates with 4.8” of face and 1.5” of top armor for close in protection. The class carries an even number of standard sized capped armor piercing (AP) shells and base fuze high explosive (HE) shells for the main battery and three quarters of HE shells for the quick firing guns. The shells use TNT I for their bursting charge and white power for their propellant. Innovative turbine engines eliminate pistons used to turn the drive shaft with steam driven turbine blades, the first ship in Spanish service to use this system. Using just naturally aspirated boilers vented through one funnel burning coal to heat the steam that drives the turbines gives a fantastic 16,742 indicated horse power to create a top speed of 21.5 knots, remarkable for a ship of this size, and an operational range of 8817 nautical miles with a balanced rudder turned by an electro-hydraulic engine. Krupp armor is laid 12“ thick on the main belt, 1.5” inner belt, 6” fore and aft belt, 1.5” on the whole deck, 0.5” inner deck, 1.5” superstructure, and 14” conning tower. The class has an advanced anti-flooding system, double bottom hull, reinforced bulkhead on extensive compartmentation, and anti-torpedo II protection. The class has an advanced radio telegraph system. Crew complement is 998 officers and ratings provided spacious quarters. All six ships of the class were laid down in March of 1905 with a design displacement of 16,468 tons at a cost of $21,280,910 each and a build time of 16 months. Monthly maintenance in port is $1 million. The class consists of the San Pedro Apóstol, Septentrión, Begoña, San Miguel, Poder, and Censeur. With these new ships, officers, and men, España can once more hold her head up as a proud member of the Great Powers of Europe, and strongly resist the march of World Communism.

That was strange. You move the ships and have the tonnage. But I think they you also have to send in troops or invade the region in some manner to squash the rebels. Tonnage is just so you can move the men in. So six months later they won lol.

Heraldo de Madrid: 20 June 1906 The Armada Resucitada The Kingdom has been proud to meet the new century as the Nueva España. And no small part of that is the creation of the Armada Resucitada, with the design of our new battleships now approaching completion. Following the catastrophe of 1898 the Crown pressed the Consejo de Ministros, with the support of the Centrist party, to approve a new Ministro de Armada and a new Almirante Supremo de la Armada given the writ to purge the Armada of Aristo deadweight and Carlist sympathizers, to bring in technical knowledge to modernize a new generation of warships and new thinking on education, training, doctrine and treatment of naval personnel both on ship and ashore, and to create of new naval facilities to support an enlarged modern Armada and new Spanish industry to create it. The Almirante Supremo de la Armada’s first act was to scrap the whole of the Halcón class of torpedo boats. This class has become outdated with the invention of the torpedo boat destroyer, the lightest practical warship in today’s Armada. He also cancelled the construction of the Reina Regente class armored cruiser Aragon. In the four years since then the first fruits of this policy, the creation of the Armada Resucitada, began to slide off the slipways of Cadiz and Barcelona. Aided by the Junta Técnica de la Armada Real Española, the Almirante Supremo has given España an Armada in which the people can reside their pride and hope. The Francisco de Asis class of Light Cruisers were designed to replace the older Infanta Isabel class, the most deficient ships remaining from the old Armada. Designed on a semi-armored cruiser hull with reduced beam, draft, and displacement to minimize costs, the Francisco de Asis is armed with three single 5”/40 gun mounts with 2.2” gun shield face and 1.1” top, enhanced reloading systems, advanced flash fire protection in the shell handling spaces below the gun mount which have 2.2” of armor, and advanced hydraulic turning engines, one mount firing forward and one firing aft with another positioned forward of the aft mount able to fire broadsides are the main battery which are aimed with the use of a coincidence range finder. The class also carries fourteen mark 2 3”/35 quick firing guns in casemates with 4” of face and 1” of top armor for close in protection. The class carries an even number of standard sized capped armor piercing (AP) shells and base fuze high explosive (HE) shells for the main battery and three quarters of HE shells for the quick firing guns. The shells use guncotton for their bursting charge and white power for their propellant. Three underwater torpedo tubes firing aft and on each broadside use a standard load of 17” torpedoes and carries mines which completes the armament. Three stage triple expansion engines powered by coal fired higher pressure induced draft boilers vented through two funnels to provide 11,457 indicated horse power for a top speed of 20.5 knots on a designed displacement of 3008 tons for an operational range of 2609 nautical miles. Hydraulic systems use fluid pressure to power the ship’s balanced rudder which reduces speed lose in a turn. Krupp armor using an alloy with 1% of chromium provides greater hardness of the surface of the plate compared with Harvey armor and is laid 4” thick on the main belt, 0.4” on a second inner belt, 2” on the fore belt forward of the main battery magazine, 2” on the aft belt, 1” on the main deck, 0.5” on the fore and aft decks, 1.2” on the superstructure, and 4.8” on the conning tower. The ships has a double bottom hull with an advanced anti-flooding systems that provide piping and pumps to drain flooding from the ship and reinforced bulkheads protecting its standard compartmentation. The 224 crew of officers and ratings are provided spacious quarters in consideration of their health and welfare. The original design was demonstrated to be heavy by the bow, so the planned foremost casemate guns and the forward torpedo tube were removed. The ships cost $2,676,105 each, laid down in January of 1900 they took 10 months to build, and have a monthly maintenance cost of $144,806 when in peacetime status. The class consists of ten ships; the Francisco de Asis, Vasco Nuñes de Balboa, Almirante Cervera, Satélite, Colón, Santa Lucia, Resolución, Andaluza, Península, and Principe Alfonso.

Heraldo de Madrid: 21 August 1909 Major Refits Conducted During Time of Rising Tensions The Almirante Supremo de la Armada has ordered all ships into refit except the battleships Argonauta and Vencedor, which he has ordered released for scrapping to free up personnel for transfers to other ships. The refits are modernizing all the ships, installing turbines where these are missing and converting the boilers to burn either coal or oil, and thus installing oil tanks in the ships. Where possible armor is being thickened, and all armor cladding replaced with Krupp II. A new acoustics device, the hydrophone, is being installed in all ships to help detect incoming torpedoes or that war crime tool, the submarine. Other protections against torpedo attacks and flooding have been improved. Equipment suites on all ships will now be standardized, easing training requirements. Guns have all been updated to mark 3 designs, though some 3” casemate guns had to be pulled out of the Francisco de Asis and San Juan Baptista classes. Cordite II, which is significantly safer to use, has become the standard propellant throughout the fleet. Initial estimates placed the time of refit to be one month for all classes except the Arquera, which would take two, but the estimates did not consider the impact of putting the whole fleet into refit at the same time, doubling the duration of the refits. With war breaking out in Europe the Cortes Generales has questioned why the Almirante Supremo de la Armada did not suspend work on the San Pedro Apóstol class battleships Real Famila and Contento being built for our Mexican and Esthonian allies, and then suspending work on up to half our the Armada Real Española so that the Nation would always have operational ships available.

Heraldo de Madrid: 16 December 1906 New Armored Cruiser Class With the amazing success of the new Turbine engines in the San Pedro Apóstol class the Junta Técnica de la Armada Real Española has decided to design a new armored cruiser. The Princesa de Asturias class armored cruisers are designed to supplement the cruiser force of the Armada Real Española. The main battery is four twin 8”/40 mark 3 gun turrets, two super firing forward and two super firing aft in an ABXY configuration, having a 10” face, 5” top, and 9.3” barbette armor with flash fire III protection, enhanced reloading, and electro-hydraulic turning engines, the guns are aimed with the use of coincidence II ranger finders. The class carries eighteen mark 3 4”/35 casemate guns as a secondary battery. This is the first class of the Armada Resucitada provided with a tertiary battery, of twelve mark 3 2”/35 casemate guns in the superstructure. The class carries an even number of standard sized capped ballistic armor piercing (AP) shells and base fuze high explosive (HE) shells for the main battery and three quarters of HE shells for the secondary and tertiary. The shells use TNT I for their bursting charge and the innovative Cordite for their propellant. Turbine engines powered by naturally aspirated boilers burning coal vented through two funnels provide 11,594 indicated horse power for a top speed of 19.5 knots and a range of 3364 nautical miles with a balanced rudder turned by an electro-hydraulic engine on a design displacement of 12,514 tons. Krupp II armor, which has a new composition that reduces the brittleness of the back of the armor plate, is laid 10” thick on the main belt, 1.5” inner belt, 5” on the extended belt, 1.5” over the whole deck, 0.1” on the inner deck, 1.5” on the superstructure and 10” on the conning tower with reinforced bulkheads, extensive compartmentation, a double bottom hull, anti-flooding systems, and anti-torpedo II protection. The class has an advanced radio telegraph system. Crew complement is 818 officers and ratings provided spacious quarters. All first ship of the class has just been laid down, others will follow as funding becomes available. Each ship will cost $16,640,560 with a build time of 15 months and monthly maintenance of $790,427 when in port. The class consists of Princesa de Asturias, Santa Ana, Aragon, San Juan el Menor, San Martin, and Emperador Carlos V. The new turbines have also had the benefit of improving conditions in the engineering spaces. While coal fired boilers are still dirty, the use of turbines instead of triple expansion engines has made the engineering spaces much quieter, which in turn has increased the interest of officer cadets in following an engineering career track.

Heraldo de Madrid: 18 September 1909 The World Seems at War The current tensions in the world seem to have sprung on us unawares, but this global conflict has been building slowly over months. In November of 1908 Great Britain declared war on both the Republic of China and the Republic of Germany. In August of 1909 Great Britain expanded that war to include Austro-Hungary and Japan. This kicked off a flurry of further declarations. The Soviet Union declared war on Germany, China, and Japan. France then declared war on Germany, China, Japan and Austro-Hungary. Now the government of the United States has declared war on Great Britain, France, and especially the Soviet Union. The only two major powers not drawn into this conflict are the Kingdoms of Italy and Spain. We can only hope the Consejo de Ministros is prepared for any potential further escalation.

@@BrotherMunro True. But reducing funnels, ie. top weight, and putting the saved displacement into the range slider instead can get you range while reducing both pitch and roll. PS. Some hulls only allow for a couple-few funnels, and if a ship was designed for “less than the max” funnels, adding can be impossible because the hull just isn’t long enough.

Spain might be the single hardest start in the game, and then you go and add self-imposed challenges?

I really really wish that the devs decide to make the map work similarly to HOI4, where if you keep scrolling to one side it eventually loops back

Let’s be real here, a map that loops back around is fairly basic and it’s a bit embarrassing the game doesn’t have it! I’m pretty sure Hearts of Iron *one* could do it.

@@BrotherMunro true true lmao, almost every game with a world map does this, I seriously thought that they would just put the looping map a little later after they introduced the world map, but it's already been a little too long

At least it works for task forces. Imagine à ship from Australia going to new Zelande with a pit stop at Cape Town

@@BrotherMunro Hearts of Iron 1 absolutely had a looping map. Should be basic, but... well... sigh, how to put this? I knew the lead developer, sort of, back in his modding days. He has had a habit of choosing weird hills to die on, and it has sounded like this may be one of them.
