"The tonsils are part of what is called Waldeyer’s ring. Generally when talking about tonsils we are talking about the palatine tonsils situated on both sides of the throat. The tonsils are important in the early years of life because the lymphoid tissues containing the immune cells are continuously exposed to many antigens. That is why until the age of 6 tonsils are typically hyperplastic and tend to regress by 12 years of age. The palatine tonsils have a strong blood supply from five different vessels, that is why there is a risk of a lot of bleeding with tonsillectomy. Zooming to the tonsils, we can see they have deep crypts and lymph nodules. The crypts are normally colonised by many species of bacteria and also exposed to many viral organisms.
Many viral and bacterial organisms can cause tonsillitis, which is inflammation of the tonsils causing tonsillar oedema, hypertrophy, erythema and pain. The inflammation may affect other areas of the back of the throat, including the adenoids and the lingual tonsils. This inflammatory response produces exudate either white, grey, or yellow discharge. Cultures are not often useful in distinguishing the offending pathogen because even you grow something they are probably commensal organisms anyway.
Generally with acute tonsillitis the pharynx is also inflamed and so a better definition is pharyngotonsillitis rather than acute tonsillitis.
Majority of the cases of tonsillitis are usually from viruses. Common viral organisms that cause tonsillitis include epstein barr virus (EBV), adenovirus, rhinovirus, RSV, influenza and parainfluenza. The most common bacterial cause of acute tonsillitis is Group A Streptococcus (GAS). We will focus on a the two clinically important causes of acute tonsillitis: EBV and GAS"

As soon as I got into my room I slumped onto my bed (can’t lie, that slump felt so good) but good god was I weak. @@erondesu7530 Yes. It is improving today. Although my tonsils are still puffed up, it's not as painful as the days before. Ibuprofen+paracetamol with every meal, and gargling with warm salt water at least 3 times a day really helps. Nothing cold and oily down the throat. Mostly porridge and boiled egg diet. When the pain was too much, I just drink hot water the whole day because it soothes the pain a little. As for the chills, I put on my winter gear (cap, gloves, two layers of sweater, socks, two layers of blankets) and a heating pad for the sore leg muscles. Usually the chills go away 2-4 hours after taking the medicine. Hope this helps!

@@iwastubed96 absolutely helps! I just discovered taking paracetamol before eating DOES help alot. The main thing for my tonsilities though is the swallowing part, it's still pretty hard. I went to an urgent care and told the doctor my right tonsil has white spots on it and he said he saw nothing. I went home that same day took pictures and sent it to family members and they could clearly see it. Luckily the doctor still gave me antibiotics but it’s day three and I’m still in lots of pain. Luckily I have 800mg ibuprofen leftover from my wisdom teeth removal, but every time it wears off the pain is unimaginable. Can’t even sleep once it’s worn off. Let me update you on this: It's nothing, it hasn't changed at all during all this time, but my epiglottis has been feeling swollen, which might be the result of using too much salt on the warm saltwater, it could also have been a bad candy, either way if you're not getting fevers or colds then it's no big deal. If you're still unsure I suggest gargling with a spoonful of hydrogen peroxide (oxigenated water), 10 volumes, don't fucking swallow the stuff, gargle for 15 seconds, let the foam work and spit it out.

I get this like 4 times every year. Lucky to those people who suffer from it the first time.. I just embraced this stupid pain now after experiencing it around 30+ times since I was 7 years old.. not even joking This is like a curse to me now, it disables me to drink too much cold drink, talk to much because the throat will itch and will result to Tonsillitis for me, I also stopped eating sweet foods. I've been very cautious now.

@@Lifeofdeyoung wow this takes me back lol. What it turned out to be after more appointments was that my wisdom teeth were coming in crooked and got infected. This inflamed my tonsils and gave me a huge canker sore on the site of the infection. It is called pericoronitis and I had to get my wisdom teeth taken out and take a anti infection medicine for about a week before it completely healed
