Love interviews with Mat. He’s so honest. He doesn’t give cookie cut answers.

I love his honesty and pragmatism. Doesn't give a fuck but also doesn't want to speak out of turn. Him saying that some movements are valued more than others depending on which day they land on made a lot of sense. The scoring system should be changed.

Mat's interviewing skills have improved dramatically in the last year. I think the time with Shane and Tia has helped him come out of the pain cave and enjoy the experience a little more than training solo in his basement. His answers are consistent across interviews and he seems much more relaxed. I also think the sanctionals has helped him deal with media and helped him prep for questions.

Probably the essential difference between Mat and the rest of the elite athletes is that he swings for the fences in every workout. He wants to win them all. It’s not a positive mental attitude and self-belief things that I’m sure all the athletes want to win and “believe” they can. This is different. Mat actually can. No one else can actually win every event. Mat can literally win everything. It’s unbelievable. 🤙

Cutting the field was designed to create that pressure on the leaders like Mat and Tia but force 2nd and 3rd to be a battle also.

I think it was Training Think Tank that had a very casual video about points and maybe changing how we do the scoring system in the games. To Matt's point of beating Noah by a whole minute but only gaining 10 points, should Dave be looking into a different way to score events? One thing TTT mentioned was rewarding more based on what was done. So if Matt wins by a minute as opposed to a much closer margin maybe he should be rewarded more. Because we're testing fitness, if both guys finish neck and neck, their fitness is pretty close together. Is there a way to reward "outstanding" performances more? Maybe a percentage based points system across the whole field? I'd like to hear some of your thoughts Armen on the points system and if we need to change it to more accurately depict fitness.

I love all the competitions but have always been curious what the top 3 would look like in every weight division IF there were a meet that was based on weight.

Idk. Froning made $25k for the team win ($100k split 4 ways). Consider that Froning could have taken the wildcard from Castro and went after $300k vs Mat this year. Max purse Froning took in his career was $275k--not a lot more this year, but more nonetheless. With the Mecca that Cookville has become and all of the other endorsements from Rogue, Reebok, and whatever else; I cannot imagine it would be worth it for Froning. Also, despite him appearing well, Froning made a slight crack at the legends event at the Rogue Invite about knees and being banged up. He's a smart guy and he is the OG face that helped launch the sport. He just doesn't need it. I could maybe see a sanctionals though. To me, that would be fun and right for the novelty.

I love that he is talking about the scoring system. The scoring in CF has been mathematically terrible at telling the story of what happened on the field of play for a long time. (I feel it was never good). It doesn't reward the margin of victory. Years ago I actually emailed back and forth with Tony Budding (old school CF guy at a high level of the early games) on a method that I feel would be better. This is from almost 5 years ago, but the idea would still work. I think it would be a MUCH better way to score the athletes. Applies even more when it is down to only 10 of them. *this "open letter" was written back in 2014: blog.lex-artis.net/post/77935995387/an-open-letter-regarding-scoring-and-crossfit?fbclid=IwAR0S39xCYXEKsX0oRH5AkI0ud0Lp8Re5WkrOPKOdXrGOo-sgbmPCBdaO3sk

Has anyone asked him about the ruck? Seen three interviews and nothing. It had to be motivation when people were calling him a cheater. Not judging the situation either way. He was hit with a penalty and you move on but people were so quick to turn on him including some of the media. Would love to hear his opinion on the entire situation.

He could have been more gracious when asked “why was this year so close?” He could have said “it was a combination of things INCLUDING the fact that Noah brought it”.

I appreciate Mat's perspective as far as the games format - he'll follow the rules, whatever they end up being - but for him to say he has no input and no weight over what the games could be is a bit disingenuous. The most decorated man in the sport can't have any impact on what Dave Castro decides to do in the future? I highly doubt that.

Mat not recognizing that Noah realized he was in second on the pegboard and that all he had to do was stay second. He acts like Noah wouldn't have sped up had there been other times. Guy really doesn't want to give Noah any credit and it is a bad look.

I was cheering for Mat. I really wanted to see him tie Rich's record. Tia learned from Mat and just blew away the competition. Unfortunately, Mat learned from Tia and just barely squeaked by. Not sure if this training together is beneficial to Mat.

Jim Shew ... to be fair. Tia started in track. Matt started in Olympic weightlifting. The early cut events were runner focused and weight top performance better than later events. And the cuts were based on running events. If you flipped the order of events (weights before running) Matt would have had a dominating lead entering the final day.
