Armor backplate excavation time-lapse

The rubbish layers from a James Fort cellar backfilled in the early 17th century revealed this complete armor backplate. The excavation of this piece of armor, by Jamestown Rediscovery archaeologists, is captured here in time-lapse format. Armor similar to this piece are on display at the Archaearium (archaeological museum) at Historic Jamestowne.

I thought it was a back plate but on that museum display it’s arranged as a chest plate.

Wouldn't they have recycled the metal? Seems strange to throw it away

This is something I always wonder. I would guess items like this were put in storage for later use, but either forgotten about or rusted too much while in storage. Does seem strange to waste so much metal in that time

Seems that they rendered the Armour cumbersome and useless in fighting Indians which where higly moveable and agile in field So the stuff was stored away and then left behind.... Not scrapped simply because one is always hesitating to destroy war material...maybe there comes the time to be used again.
