I served in the Marine Corps for 21 years as an infantry officer with 3 years in combat a long time ago. The last opposed Marine Corps opposed landing was in the Korean War at Inchon. Since then, the Marines have not made an opposed landing in over 70 years because of two factors. The Marine Corps no longer has to make a Regimental or Division size opposed landing and the Navy no longer has the amphibian ships and support for anything larger than a Marine battalion and even then it would have to be a non-opposed landing. The combination of Marine and Navy capably have long made opposed landings by Marines not viable for many reasons. Marines have lost the ability to land overwhelming forces across opposed beaches. The Navy no longer has the ships to land significant Marine Forces. The Navy no longer have the war ships to provide significant support for the landing forces. And there is no longer sufficient air support to support a regimental or division scale landing. In addition to all of that, the Marines have not invested in the means or practice conducting amphibious landings at night or in foul weather, which in my opinion are the two conditions in which a successful opposed landing could be possible today. And since the Marines just got rid of all of its tanks, Marines would have no means of heavy armor to support them in an amphibious assault. So in my opinion, here is the biggest problem for the Marines: the no longer have any capability that the Army couldn't just as easily takeover. The current commandant of the the Marine Corps has eliminated all Marine Corps armor and has decided that the Marines will be very light forces on isolated islands firing antiship missiles at the enemy. So why can't the Army have light forces on isolated islands firing antiship missiles at the enemy??? The Current Commandant hasn't articulated why there is a need for a Marine Corps if not to establish a beachhead in amphibious operations for follow-on forced to advance. Without such a need, there isn't any reason the Marine Corps is any different than the Army. The Army can land a bunch of forces on an unopposed beach just as well as the Marine Corps. The current Marine Commandant hasn't articulated why there is a need for a Marine Corps because he just indicated that opposed amphibious landings are no longer a Marine Corps mission and so why have a Marine Corps? That means that future Marine Corps landings will be administrative and I don't see why the Army can't make administrative landings as well.

The AAV was derived from what started out as the LVTP7 it was designed and built by what was know as FMC CORP. the units were built in San Jose Calif. I was working there at the time the first fully ready unit was delivered to the Marines that was in 1972 that is how long the combination of this Vehicle has been around. The first units where able to do 8 knots and travel in 6 ft swells if I remember correctly they could transport 25 fully outfitted soldiers or open top bay doors and haul 1 ton of supplies. And any soldier who served in the last 50 + years will obviously know of the M113 that vehicle was also built at the same facility and it is probably the most widely use troop transports in the world, it is use in over forty countries and over 80,000 have been manufactured.

Due to a tragic incident July 30, 2020, the Marines have discontinued the use of AAVs on deployment.

The ACV is less maneuverable than the AAV on account the AAV can pivot and the ACV has a wider turning radius than an LVSR
