The evolution of armour didn’t stop at the plate harness. For example, the police use specialised armour in public order situations. Jason is joined by Liam and Dan to discuss the form and function of modern armour and how it relates to the protection worn by the medieval knight.

Would be certainly interesting but for a armour to fit and function properly it has to be tailored exactly to the needs of the wearer so it wouldn´t fit them, it would be heavier because the weight isn´t distributed correctly and it may be very uncomfortable because of sheets pressing into your body.

@@1597B I know this is an ancient comment in terms of youtube, but I thought you might find it interesting to know a lot of modern H.E.M.A. competitive gear is going this way, look up the pro gauntlets by CrossGuard as an example, aside form the cooled shirts because the big issue with most of the modern tech like it is that you either have to replace it between rounds (which is a big faff if you have 6 layers on and you only get 2 minuts between rounds) or there's a risk of the tubing snapping under the pressure of the blows meaning you automaically get disqualified for gear failure, so most of us just put up with the heat

I wonder if this may be more the equivalent of a brigandine than full plate since that looks like soft armor (pistol & knife). A modern soldier's body armor has chest, back, and side rifle plates. The groin, shoulders, and neck have thick kevlar like the chest of that vest had. It doesn't move with you at all and you feel something like a top-heavy turtle in "full battle rattle", as we called it. Interesting, we never had any leg protection. A soldier is more likely to face rifle fire, while police are more likely to find themselves in a melee. Probably why the riot armor provides almost the same coverage as medieval armor. Great video! Edit: There was no thigh protection when I was in 10 years ago, but I think they are introducing some pieces to cover the femoral artery, so the armor keeps evolving.

Public order situations are a lot more similar to the medieval battlefield than the modern battlefield is. The biggest differences I can think of are the lack of volley archery (some tactics involving ranged weapons bear more similarity to sniper archery but those aren't commonly found in the UK), & that one side is outnumbered while the other is outgunned & outdrilled*. Cavalry charges still happen, but are slower, smaller in scale, almost always successful (medieval charges sometimes failed) & less ambitious. They don't happen very often though, & to this day I have personally witnessed only one. *I can't stress enough that even with all the equipment the single biggest advantage the police have over everyone else is drill. If someone were to found a university society practising drill, then they might not be able to beat the police into submission but I reckon they could put up a tough fight, assuming a slight numbers advantage & youth making up for paucity of equipment.

well except medieval battlefields had a lot more maces, axes and polearms which most riots tend not to be used much these days. and cavalry charges don't generaly get anywhere near as nasty as they used to because most police don't used swords or lances to break up crowds anymore.

There's two kinds of shields. Both are used. The big roman rectangle is used in formations because you can interlock them together and build shield walls to protect from thrown objects and deny access. The smaller buckler is used when you break formation and charge the piss out of someone. Smaller shield still gives you protection and is lighter but won't weigh you down when you're sprinting at some asshole who's pissed his team lost an important game for the twentieth consecutive year.

I have also thought that, police uniforms being all-black, they would be particularly vulnerable to attrition with infrared heat lamps such as those used to heat certain old churches. The trouble would be that such lamps consume a humongous amount of electricity. This means they cannot be battery-powered, making the electricity source a strategic point that both sides would want to control, opening up another front line (kind of like North Africa in WWII, with the Suez Canal represented by a plug socket). I wonder why the colour black was chosen in the first place. I get it all being the same colour, that's pretty standard for an army, but why black as opposed to any other colour. Why not city colours? Then everyone will see these officers' exploits & they'll know that this city did this! Show a bit of civic pride!

For armoured soldiers/knights on the battlefield, I wonder if there was any awe/curiosity from soldiers fighting for one nation towards the style of armour worn by soldiers/knights of another nation when facing them in battle for the first time. Two questions which could be turned into video ideas: 1) What's the most recent melee armor that was standard issue? [By melee I mean designed to protect against melee weapons but not necessarily guns but could include them, as I'm sure towards the end of the sword's time, guns already existed.] 2) What might melee armor look like if it was designed today by a military that's taking it seriously? [I'd bet it'd be camouflage, and have a stealthier audio footprint, and be lighter, and more comfortable.]
@binaryglitch64
@binaryglitch64 2 жыл бұрын
These questions brought on by realizing that the evolution of armor never stopped ... meaning there was once a weird time when a soldier might deal with guns... or swards, axes, maces, and the like... depending on who he's fighting ... must have been a strange time, and that made me wonder... what if we never invented guns but had all the rest of modern tech... what would armor be like today? For that matter what was it like to be a soldier at a time when swards weren't extinct from the battlefield yet guns were already more advanced than rocket arrows ... more like modern guns... I assume there was some overlap. That had to be the strangest time ever to be a soldier. By the US civil war we had virtually no armor, swards and guns ... but there had to be a time (probably just before that) when guns recognizable as guns in the modern sense saw the same battlefield as something like full plate armor. That's dawning on me and my curiosity is peaked also my curiosity is piqued as well... For the unaware: (peak = at it's top most point... piqued = excited. Just for fun I define one more homophone... peeked is to have taken a quick glance.) [EDIT: I wrote this before finishing the video... after watching I still don't feel it's answered.]

@@binaryglitch64 Probably a very interesting transitional time was the mid 1600s. By then you had flintlock guns, which enabled sustained fire while armor was still around. As thickness of armor grew to stop gunfire, where that was attempted, the number of pieces worn declined. You saw the full suit decrease to mostly upper body and some tassets, then before long, just a cuirass and maybe helmet.

Same use between a strapped round shield and a centergripped one? According to Roland Warzecha, head of the Dimicator fencing school, the viking centergipped shield is supposed to be your main weapon when fighting with it, it's the weapon you fence and bind with. Your right hand weapon (if you're righthanded) is your exploiting weapon. Its goal is to use the opportunities resulting from the shield bind to inflict damage.
@ModernKnight
@ModernKnight 3 жыл бұрын
yes he has some interesting views. I'm not sure I'd describe the shield as the main weapon, but it can certainly lead an attack. not goign to do much damage against an armoured person though unless you manage to hit the unprotected face. He also talks about duelling a lot, which is different to battlefield combat of course.
@atrior7290
@atrior7290 3 жыл бұрын
@@ModernKnight Yes all of this is quite true. Altough about armor, there were plenty of unprotected areas in the viking age not just the face. And from the sources we have the scandinavian warriors of that period didn't seem to wear a lot of padding. Your exploiting weapon would be either a spear (which can pierce through mail rings) or an axe or a viking sword (which both have a lot of heft and would break bones undernieth mail as written in the sagas) I'd say considering the weapons and armor of the time armor is not so much of a problem. And arguably those weapons were predominantly used for duels. Raids didn't oppose much resistance and battles were rare and fought in usually low numbers. But you are right about battlefield use. During battle the sources we have describe the main use of round shields: Shield walls. In battle those would be used mainly in formations, using probably spears between shields to inflict damage so yes then the shield would be used pretty much the same way police shields are used in anti-riot formation so exactly as you said.
@ModernKnight
@ModernKnight 3 жыл бұрын
The issue I have with shield edge used as an attack is that it doesn't hurt at all unless it hits specific areas. I've been in mock combat with blunt wooden swords and real shields, and strikes to anything but the face or maybe the fingers or feet just does not much at all. We tried. The biomechanics are not good.
@atrior7290
@atrior7290 3 жыл бұрын
@@ModernKnight As you can see in demonstrations from Roland Warzecha, the shield edge is not used to deal damage, the shield is used to fence and bind but the damage is dealt with the exploiting weapon. Strikes with the shield edge are used to stun, block an arm or push to put off balance, not to deal damage. That's still your sword/axe/spear's job
@ModernKnight
@ModernKnight 3 жыл бұрын
I agree, and that's why it's not your main weapon. Maybe there's some confusion over the meaning of the word 'weapon'? In my understanding it's a tool used for combat that is designed to do damage.

I prefer plate armor more yet it wouldn’t fair against fire arms. I wish we had plate armor that is bullet proof. Police armor makes me cringe because it makes me think of police officers beating up people while knight armor makes me think of knights preforming chivalrous acts. Knight armor is also beautiful, majestic, and epic looking while police armor looks unpleasant and is always the color black while knight armor comes in all kinds of colors, looks, shapes, and sizes. Not every knight was a hero but I think there were more good knights than bad knights and I wish there is more good cops than bad cops. Just my opinion.

Your British police armour looks a lot like the type of 'armour' used in Robocop. The helmut on the other hand is straight out of Star Wars and is reminiscent of the Storm Trooper head gear. Q: So, (historically) did the idea to create police armour come out of designs of knight armour; OR do you think it was just a coincidence? Great perspective. Thanks for sharing this comparison.
@ragnkja
@ragnkja 4 жыл бұрын
Trojanette83 The police armour is clearly based on what has worked before, and where the most vulnerable parts of a human body are. After all, the human body hasn’t really changed all that much in a few centuries, so things like the helmet have to fit the same constraints, which fixes the shape and maximum weight.
