It's actually pretty hard to make fun of foreign languages without offending them, and that sketch made a wonderfull job. As a french who speaks a little of german, I can say it's the exact translation of what we say, and it's hilarious.

True story. Having lived in the UK for about 15 years, I once told my Italian family I didn't recommend buying a particular type of food because it was full of "condoms" (full of preservatives).

I've actually seen people doing this, pretending they forgot the English word for something, even though they were English, spoke English, didn't speak much of the language they were pretending to be fluent in, and were actually speaking English in the conversation they were having.

I love Armstrong and Miller, but my favorite sketch of Brits speaking/ learning French is Trigger Happy TV Learning French sketch when the football hooligan is sitting on a park bench learning French. Brilliant stuff.

I am not German, French, English. But this skit is so relatable. I am Asian . I think it resonates so well across all languages and continents. It illustrates basic human nature😂😂😂😂😂

This sketch is the last in a series of sketches, usually the French speaking guy walks up to someone English, helps them (if necessary) tells them some sob story -usually about the fact he's only been in France six months but now his English is so poor (lol! Losing a life time of English in just six months? lol!) and then after a pause asks the other person to lend him €20...now it's being done to him, you have to watch the series to really get it. xx

german: Could you me 20 euro lend? french: Is it so you could me lend 20 euros? but the sentence he uses is the only one with proper english grammar which shows that money is something that makes you remember anything in order to get some more^^

I have suffered mildly from this problem with Danish, especially as Danish constructions are so similar to English, but the way they use the same words is different especially prepositions!

Nope. The 2nd person you is "Sie", with a capital S, whereas the 3rd person they is "sie", with a lowercase.

The punchline of this series of sketches is always that they drop the pretence of not being able to speak English anymore, and revert back to perfect english.

I suspect WW-I and WW-II would not have lasted as long if we had all spoke the same language on our side. The differences between American English and British English is bad enough, but even British English is composed of different dialects that are different enough to make it difficult to understand them. And since our side won both times, why aren't the Germans speaking English? :)

And as far as English being a dialect of German, that would only be the case if you figure that most of the European languages were derived in some part from Latin.

It's an ongoing joke and also really that was the whole reason the German spoke to him in the first place all that build up just so he could ask for a bit of cash lol! Also the "lend" yeah, when's he ever going to see him again to pay it back. It's just so silly. xx

From me out. (von mir aus - fair enough) I become a gross glass earthbearbrowse. (ich bekomme ein großes Glas Erdbeerbrause - I'll take a big cup of strawberry lemond) It makes me overhead nothing out. (Es macht mir überhaupt nichts aus - I do not mind at all) Here goes it long. (lang lang ist's her - those were the days) (these are genuine denglish examples I had the misfortune to witness - by denglish I mean literally translations)

Translating "groß" as "gross" is especially bad because that's not what it means, it means "big". Gross would be ekelig or ekelhaft.

Has anyone ever actually seen or been inside a branch of Oddbins? I'm British and I gather it does really exist or once did, but I only know it as a joke byword for a certain type of (I guess dreary) retail store in comedy shows.

It's a very niche gag. Oddbins was a chain of wine shops all over the UK, there was more than 500 at one point. They were often staffed by people who were quite "overqualified" shall we say. It tended to attract people who often had degrees but just didn't know what exactly to do with their lives, but liked a drink. It was a fun place to work, but the pay was dreadful. It was a good place to buy wine though

@@HamiltonFishes Thanks, that's really interesting (particularly as I, ahem, work as a retail grunt and have done for 10 years despite postgrad qualifications, so would probably have been prime Oddbins fodder myself back in the day). I always assumed it was some sort of DIY/homeware shop. Wouldn't have guessed wine at all. So the current equivalent is what? Majestic I'm guessing?
