This issue of the Army-Navy Screen Magazine of the Screen features the 1944 edition of the Army-Navy Football game, the original "Game of the Century" that saw Army ranked #1 in the nation, and Navy ranked #2. As it turned out, Army was on its way to win a National Championship. Held in Baltimore, the game was attended by many of WWII's great leaders including (at 2 minute mark) General George C. Marshall, General Ben Lear, General Hap Arnold, Admiral King, Admiral Leahy. The Navy goat and the Army's mule are seen at the 2:30 mark.
At the game, it was announced that War Bond sales totaling $58,637,000, the amount fans purchased with their tickets for the game.
Why the game of the century -- well, every year the Army and Navy football teams meet for one epic game. But December 2, 1944 was different -- America was in the midst of World War II, with sacrifices made by everyone.
Navy’s team was ranked number two, Army’s number one and on the verge of becoming national champions. Everywhere, the war stopped as soldiers listened to the broadcast...
Army wins toss and kicks off. (#47) Clyde Scott runs kick back for long return. Army's Glenn Davis makes good gain (#41). Army's Hall (#42) goes for TD. Navy gains on Hamburg to Hansen pass. Hamburg runs for short yardage. Scott scores Navy TD, score: Army 9 -- Navy 7. Army Plebe, CU Glenn Davis, Felix Blanchard drives for TD. Minor pitches out to Glenn Davis for another Army TD. Final score 23-7 on scoreboard.

That's my dad playing the horn when they introduce the goat. As a plebe (and the following 2 years), he was leader of what used to be the NA 10. It was the dance/jazz band of that era. He graduated with the class of 1947. They actually graduated in 1946 because of the accelerated program of the war.

LOL. The academies threw the ball more often back then than they do now.

Whoa Nellie, The Game of the Century??? Army had two legends Blanchard and Davis, if you claim to be a football fan and know nothing of Glen and Doc, you ail. However, the game was a slaughter with Navy passing about as well as the do today, Badly. In order to have a game of note, you have to have two competitive teams with and ebb and flow in the scoring. As much as Navy dominates Army today, at that time the opposite was true.

SJ Bobkins Both service academies had an unfair advantage in 1944. West Point and Annapolis recruited players from other major schools, while the majority of able bodied 18-23 year old males were off fighting in Europe and the Pacific. Other schools had to choose teams made up of men unfit for military service, usually blind in one eye, deaf in one ear, or missing a couple toes or fingers. Army and Navy football players did their military service by playing college football for the academies. Felix Blanchard and Glen Davis were legends stateside because they weren't dodging bullets at Normandy or at Bastogne. No wonder both schools won their last college football national championships during WW2.

The sad thing is a lot of these young men went on to be killed or maimed in the meat grinder that was WW2.

It was the end of 1944 and seniors wouldn't graduate until the last land and sea battles were over. Some Midshipmen might have had to face the Kamikazes, but probably relatively few.
