In the 80s, I passed the tests of that time and scored in the first percentile. The recruiter told me I had my choice of trade, and I told him infantry. He looked at me for a good 15 seconds, then asked me if I had cheated on my tests if I knew anyone who had done it before that had given me an up.... He just couldn't believe that someone with a high score would choose that job over all of the other civilian translating trades they had back then (Firefighter, etc...) that are now filled by civilian contractors. What can I say, it was a family thing. They ALL went pilot, but I wore glasses, so I chose the next dumbest thing. That recruiter was right. Bum knees, a broken back and neck, a hip replacement later, and I WISH I had listened to that good man. The only bright side is that my son will have a big chunk of titanium to sell when I croak.

All three environments have their own advantages, I guess. It seems like the Air Force is the toughest option for a part-time reservist because it has the biggest time commitment away from your home unit - which can be tough with a full time job. Is that true to say? How do the Army and Navy compare on that score?
@PrairieSailor

By pass the system that’s what I’m doing, join a reserve unit say army, do your bmq part time, then after you finish your given lets say 3 week occupation training, then apply to transfer to the airforce reserve unit near you, if they have jobs available, now this is to avoid going to st jean, that doesn’t mean skipping borden for example for specific airforce occupational training. Best of luck

What is the difference of P Res and Supp res in the Air Force and/or Navy?
@PrairieSailor
@PrairieSailor Жыл бұрын
Members of the Primary Reserve are actively serving part-time or full-time. The Supplementary Reserve is for members with previous service who want to take a break from active service but do not wish to release completely. You can be on sup res for a period of time and transfer back to PRes rather than release and have to re-apply.

Yes, there are lots of opportunities if you are willing to travel. It depends on your occupation as well, and if you are fully qualified. There are even a few opportunities in your home city, especially for shorter contracts. Courses range from 1 - 4 months, a CFTPO is 6 months, and longer term are 1-3 years.

Can you change trades? or do multiple trades?
@PrairieSailor
@PrairieSailor Жыл бұрын
Yes, you can change trades by doing a Voluntary Occupation Transfer or other means through the Personnel Selection Office. This is a thorough administrative process and you must meet all criteria. Usually an occupational transfer is not granted shortly after joinging. No, you cannot do multiple trades (occupations) at the same time. However you can work/train outside your occupation for certain roles and positions throughout your career.
