Ia Drang was an enemy sanctuary so deep in the jungle that it was considered virtually impenetrable to American foot Soldiers.

Many of these boys were drafted to serve and pay the ultimate sacrifice for their country, in a battlefield so foreign and far away... and we treated them like shit when they returned. They deserved so much more.

The draft is slavery and should never be allowed, but most troops that served in or around Vietnam weren't drafted; I think only about a third were draftees. Of course, there is a nuance to those numbers, but it is not true that the war was fought by draftees. Also, if you see a soldier wearing jump wings, then, sure, that soldier may have been drafted into the US Army, but he had to volunteer and pass Airborne School to get those jump wings

@@charliep5139 If what you just wrote is accurate, then wouldn't 1/3 of the total number of troops that served in Vietnam = a pretty high number?

@@charliep5139 As the war went on, there was a shortage of doctors and surgeons, so those in reserves or rotc were called in abruptly, barely given any military training. I remember some in Germany trying to figure out where to place their ranks, etc on their uniforms. Lots of soldiers went into a failure mode, especially drugs and were rotated to Europe to hide what was going on. This problem persisted for some time after the war as well. I remember off base housing filled with drug addled soldiers that only showed up for pay, then back to their room.

We should of never of been involved in Vietnam. However I appreciate the men who fought for our country. I think that war was a terrible decision made by politicians. The outcome would of had zero difference if we had stayed out or not. The communists were going to take over but they weren’t going to take over all of Asia. That was the politicians sales pitch to get the war moving full steam ahead. In reality 58k men died for no reason. These men should of lived normal happy lives but the government has to go sticking its nose where it didn’t belong.

@@NguageTrains 58K died for no reason... if we add the North Vietnamese dead, I am sure that casualty number is enormous; all because some politicians decided to commit other people's kids to prosecute such a senseless war.

These videos originally were recorded by DASPO. The brass wanted to document the heli-bourne concept and sent 2 guys with cameras to the LZ. They got into trouble for recording Doc Carrara performing a tracheotomy on Arthur Viera Jr...too graphic....what did they expect. My father was amongst those brave men who were SOO young , I cannot even begin to contemplate what But those brave souls must have carried with them God bless them all

@GMCT67 I remember watching the war news all the time when I was a kid. I look at these pictures and they are noble and honourable. Right or wrong you have to show up. God Bless America and those who determine the fate of young soldiers.

All of my drill instructors were Vietnam vets. I had and still have a lot of respect and appreciation for their courage and sacrifice. C co 1st battalion 1 st inf regiment. 1981

I passed through an airport in Texas, in uniform, on crutches, had been wounded in Oct of 68'. I was approached by a woman about my age, 19, who asked if I had been hurt in Vietnam. I said yes and she said "I wish you would have died there". Then walked away.

After two deployments(Iraq, and Afghanistan), I can’t imagine what it was like for you and the other soldiers, sailors, marines, and airmen. I have been blessed to know several Vietnam veterans, and I have the utmost respect for you all…..

No matter your opinion of the vietnam war. It was wrong to treat the returning soldiers the way they were treated. They were doing their duty. Told they were doing the right thing. They were fighting for their country. They shouldn't have been treated like scum when they returned. If it was a different situation they would hve been treated like heroes. The decision makers that started the war with that incident that never happened should have been ostracised and made to account for their actions

@@mickryan2450 You are absolutely correct. War does nothing for the people who have to fight, it only serves the interests of the businessmen who supply the goods for the war. Me and another veteran came to the same conclusion “there are no good wars “. My friend was a Vietnam vet, and I had been to Iraq and Afghanistan.

All the talk about this battle over the years with LTG Hal Moore, Joe Galloway and others is fine and well deserved. BUT they NEVER gave any credit to the combat cameramen who took the videos that they so often used in discussing this battle. God it would be nice if they have not already passed away, to get the combat cameramen's comments on the footage that they took on this important battle !!!! The two camera men were under the SAME deadly fire as Joe Galloway, and as soldiers contributed to the defense as well with weapons!!!!! YET again, they have NEVER been recognized by the 1st Cavalry Regiment!! Cannot believe they did not interview the camera men for the book since they observed so much as their primary job was filming and not fighting!! Shame on them !!

Wow, how profound, that is how it is since there have been wars. Plato said it best, "Only the dead no longer fear war." Nobody looks forward to war and if they tell you they did they are a big liar. There is no glory in war, but glory in the men who are willing to put their life on the line, not for God and Country but for each other.

Is this Part 2 of 4? If anybody is interested in what happened here, "We Were Soldiers Once and Young" tells the second half of this engagement. The movie "We Were Soldiers" stops at the half way point in the book.

Your wrong. The U.S. won that war. Mission accomplished men and good job. Turns my stomach so many of you and innocent civilians were spent by coward legislators while you fought a defensive war and outnumbered times over in every engagement. But, you went there and won. Communism was stopped right there. At the close of the tet offensive, there was no affective communist army left. But Walt played it against you. And while you were fighting in that filthy jungle, the man who sent you there so cowardly quit on you. But you stayed, fought and won. And I thank you. China and Russia sat back and realized they best not get in it. Nixon told the Russians next ship into Haiphong harbor gets a free trip to the bottom. Ships stopped coming instantly. Current government in vn has had to open up to trade. Entire globe sees dug out Jane as the useless skank tramp she always has been. I hear people say the United States lost that war. Ask Walter Cronkite, Abby Hoffman or some lying subversive and you may hear a glossed over statement intimating that. If someone thinks and examines, there is no fact that supports it. Truth is, when we left, ARVN was doing a good job on their own. Jane cried and we stopped giving them bullets. Only then did ARVN fail and lose. When Saigon fell there were no American fighting troops in that country. ARVN had no weapons to fight with. That’s why Saigon fell. Nowhere an American Army has gone, have they been beat. It can’t happen. Only way to combat us is from within.

Yeah, I agree completely. I am so tired of hearing the newer generation of Americans and other uninformed people from around the world saying that we lost that war. We never lost a war. If any nation thinks we are week and attacks the U. S. A. it would be fatal to them.
