Haha dude, the reason the drummer smiles at the end is because he added a semi-quaver to the chart( likely by accident) and it felt 50%-50% like mistake. So he's like "meh, it still passes through🤣😉" Its common in such genres like jazz to add one final hit like a bell at the end (off the chart) haha

It's funny you should mention that, we frequently play this tune as an encore at our live performances and we open up the drum solo at the end and "unleash the beast" that is Staff Sgt. Wes Anderson. Glad you enjoyed the video, hopefully we'll see you at one of our shows once we can get back to live music!

As a jazz trombonist, whenever the band you're playing in is tight and makes no mistakes, there's that sense of "dang we're pretty good", and then we go on to the next chart. We don't have to smile, but we feel proud of ourselves when we do a good job. It's enjoyable in a humble way.

I have a similar comment. I love our military musical ensembles. From these jazz musicians, the woodwind quintets and every other group, they are awesome. They are technically proficient, and yes, can swing with the best. For some reason though, I’m accustomed to this song be a little more “ragged” than this performance, which is one reason it’s one of my favorite swing pieces. No shade, though. Love to watch these performances.

As someone who’s been playing trumpet for 14 years, been a part of more ensembles and jazz combos than I can count, and received a degree in Music Education; I can assure you these servicemen and women love what they do. It takes relentless dedication and passion to earn a spot in such a high level ensemble such as this. These players have dedicated their lives to their craft, and wouldn’t had made it to this level if they weren’t having fun. So if you’ve never been through the years of long hours of practicing, dedicating yourself to improving your talent every single day, missing family functions and social outings, and doing your damn best to be the best musician you can; then kindly stop making assumptions and half hazardously criticizing these tremendously gifted musicians. Just enjoy the music, it’s really awesome stuff :) (p.s. this is just a studio recording, live performances are much more nuanced and varied than a straight reading of the original score)
@tomerschubert2095
@tomerschubert2095 Жыл бұрын
Yeah you can feel its a studio recording in the way they play. They lacked the energy and swagger of the original song, it's almost stiff. I'm gonna try and find a recording of them playing it live and see the difference.

This isn't Jazz! This is Big Band! Swing! My parents and uncle were raised during the era. This song was pure Benny Goodman and no one could play clarinet like he could. My late father idolized him. He squeaked though on clarinet which I still have and it's over 80 years old now. We saw Benny Goodman in concert in 1975 and I was in awe and dad was in absolute heaven to see his idol in person. My parents and uncle were born in the 20's and 30's. My two grand fathers their music was Scott Joplin and when dad heard Ragtime he was hooked. Dad had all the original records he collected as a kid. Goodman, Glenn Miller, all the singers of the 40's. The records were large and heavy. They would've been worth thousands today had they not been stolen by movers when my father got sick with cancer. Sing, Sing, Sing is my favorite Benny Goodman.

The highest level of jazz musicianship is being able to relax, turn your brain off, and play really really well. I feel like this band has achieved that.

Although it's the US Army, and not the Air Force, I'm sure Major Miller will be tapping his foot in approval. Absolutely top class musicians, being paid just above the Union minimum. Respect.

I love how ppl comment as if they knew how these people felt. From what i've seen ppl that are in the military, they don't express themselves that much and tbh when I play tuba in my band, I really dont have a reason to smile. To go through their training in the music alone is really tough and I bet the competitiveness is there. It's the Dream Theater thing all over again, it doesn't mean they don't love music and playing if they don't go all Hollywood on you.

Ballet40k it's less about going Hollywood, it's more about feeling the rhythm and the music instead of just going through the motions.

I understand that it might seem as if they "don't feel the rhythm" when they don't constantly show it but my comment was rather pointed at the ppl that comment as if they know for a fact how these ppl feel when they play. Also considering there are so few players in the group in this here combo, the meaning of a tempo fuck up is so much more detrimental to the piece as a whole. You can hear the flaw immediately and I would suggest anything that takes away from their focus and concentration can cause that fuck up. What you said, however, makes me think. How does one see from these artists that they are not feeling the rhythm or enjoying the music? In this piece, they are playing to an empty room I suspect. There are shots of the audience nor there is any commotion or applause after the song. Also the drummer looks at the camera in the ending which suggests there is no audience. These artists are not actors. They are musicians in a high end orchestra playing in front of cameras. Maybe there is no excess of emotions because there is no interaction in the first place. I also made a mistake of not doing research and only now discovered that this band has little to do with the army outside of the employer and the name.

I don't think it's their reserve that gets people, even though they are stock still. You can just hear it in the music, everything's a little too precise and clear and exact. It's difficult to explain, but it just doesn't sound right regardless of what they might look like: they don't have the swing
