Don't let the fact he cut his arm off after being trapped for 6 days. He then fucking rapelles down a 60 foot rock face, and hikes 11km after cutting his arm off. This bloke is an absolute weapon

I like the part in the movie where he says, all my decisions have led me to this place, this rock was waiting for me, since millions of years ago when it was formed, until the day I was born and now it has been waiting for me. He actually got his arm cremated and spred the ashes in that same spot where it belongs according to him. Aron is such a humble, smart, bright man.

This is 11 years old so I dont actually expect much feedback, but thats really interesting to me. Would love to see somewhere confirm this. How did they get his arm out? Have they since moved the rock? I also wonder how much tourism that area gets after the movie was released, and if there is anything keeping the public from degrading that site that would be so personal to him. Couldnt imagine surviving something like he did, carving his name into the spot he was sure he would die, to have some punk ass teenagers graffiti the site. Would even agree to him keeping the exact location a secret, if he wanted.

@@samcorbett8783 The rock is still there and they actually filmed the movie at the spot. People do go there but its so incredibly out of the way that there isn't a ton of tourism and surprisingly there isn't any graffiti there.

@@samcorbett8783I’ve watched a handful of interviews by him the last 20 min and one said it took 13 men to get his arm out that was left behind. That’s how heavy it was.

There were no paramedics in the helicopter, he had a 15 min ride to Moab hospital where he walked to a stretcher and then not long after got given a lot of morphine and slept for a long time

Methamphetameme McMeth Yeah, there was a helicopter but I think he said in his book it had the rangers in that his mum had searching for him, it didn’t have paramedics in, still, whoever it was would have been pretty shocked!

This guy was so desperate to escape that he was ECSTATIC when he realized that he could break the bones to chop his arm off. He was happy... that he could successfully chop his arm off. This man is the most brave person I have ever seen.

It’s interesting that he doesn’t see the amputation of his arm as a tragedy, but more of a salvation. He found the strength to be free of this trap and because of that he’s here today, all because he managed to pull it off, quite literally. This is the definition of mental strength

I met Aaron at a book signing for his book. After he spoke and read excerpts of the book (very emotionally I might add, it was a VERY moving evening), we could all line up to have him sign our book. When it was my turn, I told him, how much I admired him and that he was unique, I let him know I would have died in that canyon, there's no way I'd have cut off my arm. He was stunned by what I said, as if he couldn't imagine NOT having thought to amputate his arm. An amazing guy!!

Easy to say that unless you are really in that situation. May be true but survival instinct is powerful. Animals will gnaw their legs off when trapped. Losing an arm is a small thing in the scheme of things and he clearly enjoys his life now.

Not many people can even think of doing something like that. That take a massive amount of will power to do.

It is the most compelling of stories. I find it has a spiritual element to it. All of these crossroads of a human beings life. A healthy vibrant young man, the remote seclusion of a deep slot canyon, no information left for anyone to know where he is. It’s deep, dark, & cold. The hawk that flies over him every morning at the exact same time. It has the element similar to an hourglass, that time is limited. The epiphany when he realizes the two bones can be broken in his arm using the very rock that has him pinned in. So many things in a brief moment of time with life or death on the line all alone, in the prime of life. It’s amazing.

ofc you cant imagine doing it, good job to him he was so very brave but after not eating and being so dehydrated in a horrible mindset you dont know what you would do. you can say you d but in reality you dont, it was life or death, 100% i would try my hardest to get out if that was the only option hes gonna die if he didnt so why sit there and wait.

Sometimes people are so ungrateful to be alive and taking for granted daily routines not appreciating every moment and then when it gets dark it's all about the human choice and it shows us who're we deep inside and do we have a will to fight for the ones we love. This story inspired me just a year ago I was looking at the thumbnail of Aron not knowing why would someone be so alone and depressed in the drop off of the canyon and then...I've red the word "stuck by the boulder" in the article.

Freja Falk I know that im definitely late but just wanted to say that he was just saying we should be thankful for what we have and the situations we are in (of course some people are in HORRIBKE conditions even at home) but to be in his situation where you are completely alone and have to cut of you own arm with a dull knife and being able to feel all that pain ist something that we should all be happy we prob won’t have to do in our life! Some of us (including myself) sometimes takes our life’s for granted even when there is nothing wrong with them compared to others

Morale of the story: tell your friends where your going, bring extra supplies (first aid, food and water) and if your friend is up to the adventure, bring them along

@@reygenne1 Remember that by this time his arm was dead, decomposing and without feeling - breaking the bones would almost certainly still hurt but when it's do or die the adrenaline and shock would probably deal with most of the pain.

I've been friends with Aron for 14 years and I can say with conviction what you see and read is genuine. I feel fortunate to call him my friend. Also, few people know that he is the only person to solo ascent all the colorado 14ers in winter. To me THAT is as impressive to me as amputating his own arm. He's one hell of a telamark skier too!

I was a limo driver here in Denver back in 2008 and drove Aron a couple of times and he was a very down to earth likeable guy.We talked a little bit about what happen and he was open minded to talk about it as well.The the kinda person who would make a good friend.

@James Flowers - I completely agree with your comment we never know the limits until we are placed in front of them either survive or die. This guys story is Crazy! But glad he came out of it alive. I'm sure his outlook and maybe his personality changed as he had already accepted his death once before.

Aron, I think about you when I'm faced with a difficult challenge. You reached down deep in your soul and found the strength to get out of that cave when many people would have given up. When I think of you, in that cave, your arm pinned between a boulder and the cave wall, in pain, dehydrated, exhausted, hungry and scared and then finally making the decision to live, It makes me feel like I am capable of much more than I ever knew. Thank you for being a hero that we can all learn from.

Saw the movie some time ago, but (literally) just finished reading the book. Amazingly inspirational story about the human spirit & will to survive. Mad respect to Aron for performing the unthinkable in order to facilitate his own escape.

Turly inspiring. This man is amazing and probably the bravest person ever. The fact that he was delighted when he realized he could finally cut his arm off by snapping the bone, insane. Aron is an amazing man wow! I just saw the film 127 Hours and his memoir is really wonderful too! It was difficult reading and viewing his story. I myself have been in a bad situation, having to overcome an accident which is nothing compared to his story!!! He is an inspiration and a wonderful example of how one should be after surviving an ordeal like that!

wow you are amazing...you are my idol. I just watched the movie today and was so moved by you I have googled you and looked at tons of pictures and just finished watching the 6 part video of you your interview. I just came accross this clip now and just heard you say that the time this happend was april 26 through to may 1st and I cant believe it is May 1st NOW as I watch this.......what an incredible moving experience your story has been to me. Thank you for sharing and for inspiration.

This guy deserves a lot of respect. He's shown people that even when we think "I will never be able to do that, i can never cut my arm off ill just die there" in situations where you need to take desperate measures, our true survival instincts kick in and anything is possible for anyone. Full on Respect. He might even actually save someone's life by teaching them they can do something as brave as he did to stay alive

i cannot even put into words.. the amazement.. and respect i have for you. you are simply amazing for going through this, and the will power you must have needed to get out is simply amazing. and i am only judging this on the movie "127 Hours" i am about to read your book tonight, and im sure my respect will grow even more when i am finished. you are a true hero and inspiration.

I never heard of Aron until I saw him on "Alone in the Wild" but I have now just finished reading his book. It's so well written. You start off thinking how on Earth did he mentally manage to cut off his own arm but the journey he takes you on makes it so much easier to understand. A fantastic book, best I've read in ages. I've now ordered the movie!

I can’t believe that he did this in real life! I was not even able to watch 5 min of him cutting his arm off in the movie and he was doing this for 1 hour and a few minutes! I can’t even think about cutting my arm off! This guy is amazing!

His story is unbelievable, no doubt, i cried with the movie too and I even remembered vividly the incident 8 years ago when I saw it on the news and I don t even live in the US. But don t ever underestimate urselves calling this guy a hero, cause many more of you than you believe would ve done something like this in his position- when u face death, u r capable of things u ve never imagined, both good or bad. So there s an Aron in all of us, more or less.

he did meet 2 people which he guided to some place before going off...however i dont remember if it was 2 girls or 1 girl and a man..regardless, the jump into the pool under the rocks etc was most likely not part of the real deal :P

Truly a miracle that he even survived this 6 day ordeal, but if you know the story (not the movie) through the book he wrote, and the interview with Tom Brokaw (beautiful job) it is a lesson for all of us. When something in life has trapped us we must cut it off and break free. Drugs, abuse, blaspheme, etc.. you see the rock in Aron's story never gave up and neither will ours.

I completely take my hat off to this man in awe of his bravery and strong will to survive. Saw the movie here in Norway today and all I can say is: MAD RESPECT!!

The human's will to survive is astonishing. It doesn't always take a person who can handle pain. Yes, Aron is a true inspiration to many people and a hero to most, but anyone would attempt it, just not everyone would succeed.

Aaron is Jigsaw. Instead of becoming embittered by his harrowing experience he learned to fully embrace life. The Saw movies may have been inspired by Aaron’s ordeal.

just watched the movie...massive respect goes out 2 aron!dont think i would have lasted hours down there let alone days!then have 2 do what he did real courage,guts n will 2 live!!

Oh..... Wow.... Aron has been one of my heroes/role models since I heard his story, and hereing it from him makes me realise how bad it must of been. I will look up to aron ralston forever, from him I learnt to live every day like it's your last.

Thoughest guy of the century. This guy must have an incredibly strong soul, will and mind. I still don't get it where he got the strength from to climb up that cannon after 5 days of starvation and having amputated his own hand.

God didn't take him out of that canyon he was stuck in mate. Aron Ralston for himself out of that canyon but cutting his own arm off. God's got nothing to do with it

I like how he describes breaking his bone as euphoric haha....his story is AMAZING, and he's one of the bravest people I've ever heard of. Plus the book and movie are great.

Yeah pee drinking is the easy part. I'll drink pee all day before I can say I'll cut my own arm off literally in the middle of nowhere, with a great risk of simply bleeding out. Yeah, pee drinking is no problem.
