WELDERS STAY BUSY - PIPELINE WELDERS DON’T // WELDING TRADE SCHOOL TOUR
In this video, we are at Western Welding Academy Gillette Wyoming a newish welding trade school. I’m Austin Ross of arosswelding and on this channel, I share my experiences as a rig welder and pipeline welder. If you are interested in pipeline welding or pipe welding in general you should look into welding schools or being a welding apprentice. It’s a great place to start beginner pipe welding and get pipe welding certification. Tech school welding is how I first learned to weld. Watch this video if you are looking for best welding schools or best pipe welding schools. If you are interested in pipeline work find a welding school that is also a pipe welding school instead of looking for a pipeline welding school specifically.
The constant rollercoaster of the pipeline welding sector has taught us that it’s important to be a welder first and foremost so building trades and building trades school is a great option for beginners to the industry. Being a tradesman or going to trade school of any kind is a great option for those of us who like to work with our hands for a living.

Back when I finished high school in 1972 the county school system had a trade school that taught welding, inside machinist training, car repair and house framing. The ones that took welding learned how to put the ground clamp on a whole can of welding rods and to weld a whole can of welding rods to the bottom of the can, not much more it was where they sent all the goof offs in the schools to get them out of the class rooms. That is the reason my dad would not let me take up the machinist course in high school After working for one year and saving my money I went back to the local Junior College and took up a one year machinist trade course. There I found some of my high school class mates taking the Junior College one year machinist course even though they had taken 2 years in high school. The first week our instructor who was a retired inside machinist started instructing us on some of the things we should learn how to do. One of the boys that went to though the high school course called the instructor out on one of the things that he said he would show us how to do, saying the high school instructor said that you could never do what our instructor had told us he would show us how to do. The instructor asked the student why he was at the Jr. College trade school if he had already taken 2 years in high school. The student said every where he went to apply for a inside machinist job and putting down the high school trade school down as experience they all told him to go to the local Jr. College and take their one year course and then come back and they would hire him. Two more in the class had the same problem getting a job out of high school. Ten months later I had to drop out early because I had to go to work because my dad got sick and my saved money had ran out. I went to work in a town 40 miles from the college, after 8 weeks on the job the company went to the Jr. College and hire all the students that wanted to go to work. Some of them were old retired military that were just taking the course to get the VA benefit and were not willing to go to work. The instructor makes all the deference when learning a trade. Having a instructor that read it out of a book that got the job because he had a college degree over someone that worked in the trade make a lots of difference. There is no reason a high school trade school can not turn out a good pipe welder after 2 years, other than the mind set of these highly educated school superintendents that look down on the trades as a place to send goof off student that will never go to college. I had enough money saved to retire at 58 while some of the class mates that went to college and got music degrees are still having to work now at 68 just to keep the light on, sad so sad how the schools and colleges mislead young people.

I'm only a self-taught hobby welder, if I can claim that, but I just wanted to say that if I were to go to a welding school, I think that Western Welding Academy is a place I certainly would like to learn serious welding. The academic structure, the positivity of Tyler, the brotherhood approach to the school, Honor to the Flag, abundance of tools and equipment, so many things that impress me make this what I would envision as a first class welding school. It's amazing to see how many states are represented in the school. If those folks come from that far away to attend, it must be fantastic. Thanks for the tour.

I’m enjoying seeing what the school has to offer. I’m a welding student, currently enrolled out here in CA. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the welding academy for having their students and staff showing respect to our flag by saying Pledge of Allegiance everyday. We said it everyday when we were little and we should’ve never stopped. I loved hearing this. Looks like a great school!.

That's the #1 issue I have in the welding industry that I struggle with constantly is Fabrication. Like Aaron said, having a good attitude is Everything for success! This welding academy really teaches that aspect about welding employment, the better you can Fabricate, the better chances you'll find employment as a welder, and keep employment Metal Fabricating as a welder. LoL I can weld really good, I just struggle when it comes to fabrication, and a good attitude is the Key to getting better. Thanks for the videos. More please!

Looks like a very nice facility to learn how to weld in . We have similar up here in Canada . I really like the area that gives you hands on in pipe fabrication . It is as you said a lead into more work . This is a far cry from my first welding school which was a down hand school put on by the UA and the alberta government in 73 . It was a old condemned building full of Lincoln 200s exhausted out side and when everyone was fired up the welding smoke was so bad you couldn't see across to the other end of the building .ventilation was 2 open garage doors either end of the building . Primitive as it was it was the best thing to learn to weld one could get at the time for pipeline down hand welding . They believed in those days head down ass up and weld weld weld . There was almost zero tolerance for guys late or blowing shifts. It was serious business, they believed they were training future tradesmen how to weld with a work ethic. Good vid Austin

Got to come back to your video but want to comment just on the title and cant agree more. Being a Pipeliner is great but keep in mind adjustments need to be made in life, and specialized skills are great but for many reasons we need to keep eyes open and willingness to bend. Even if piplinine is booming things can happen where you cant travel out not always a matter of being lazy .

I've been an electrician and self employed electrical contractor for over 45 years. I've wired and worked on everything from apartments to custom multi million dollar homes in Park City to Oil Refineries. Construction, maintenance, instrumentation. All non-unio. But I'll be damned if I can get two pieces of metal to stick together. I should have learned how to weld. I tried in high school but just didn't have the touch. What's funny is the best welder in the class in highschool barley had a high enough grade point average to graduate, but jeez that guy could weld. My best friends at the refinery jobs were welders. They say the welding crowd is a pretty tough bunch to work with. Not so if your electrician. I didn't get any crap from the welders. Why? Because they could weld anything, but without power or problems with the generator/welder who they gonna call? When I was one of the first guys to get laid off they all came by and wished me the best as I walked out that night. But I loved being an electrician even when I was freezing or sweating to death.

But not really hand on experience like this not just in a booth, but in these little rigs they got to simulate the field. And no pipe that big. But I’m in it now gotta see it through and a lot of state funding is really only way I can afford it, couldn’t do something out of state like this that far

And older model sa200 or a diesel sa-250. Tune it up nice, replace a few parts here and there and it may probably go for another 10 years

@@Ruben901 Sadly i cant find any near me.. Im in florida. I been trying to get a 200 but i think ima have to settle for a ranger 305g What do u think about that machine?

@@enrique1765 I own one myself, it has a great duty cycle and can handle heavy duty jobs. It does waste alot of gas. So by the end of the day, you will have to refill the tank. I have not welded on the pipeline with it, but it can handle a 10 inch pipe. The machine is air cooled, not water cooled like the old sa200s, which means that the ranger will most likely break down overtime. But if you keep up with its maintenance, it should last you up to 7 thousand hours! Ive seen one that had 9 thousand hours and still going strong.

Some of the best welders I've ever seen were women. I remember in Vo-Tech there was a woman that produced some of the best welds on aluminum I've ever seen.

Schools are great but up here in Canada the schools dont really care about teaching its more about how much money can they get out of the students , put 2-3 classes of 15-30 students every 3 months thats not teaching , and then in if u cant afford to go to school cause lost job or family issues whatever they say the going pull your apprenticeship
