My dad kept a couple of arowanas over the course of my childhood and I just adore them. They're such fun fish. One of them, Edward, would actually let us pet him- we'd stick a hand in the water in a folded shape, like holding an invisible sandwich, and he'd just swim through on his own. We also fed them pinkie mice as treats. But living with a 220 gal tank that had a normal amount of Fishtank Problems convinced me to never keep fishtanks ever again LOL

@Luna Moonwalker I never regret setting up "1 last" Betta tank as I know all my past and current setups have some really amazing fish & I find some unique mannerisms that totally deserve to be given quality 1 on 1 time to let them know your here & the more frequent the stronger the bond because you see things they come up with that make it obvious they are in my opinion the #1 aquatic creatures period 💙🌱🍀💚 Definitely not suited for most since they deserve better than what the average human is capable of , Bettas deserves & so do you💜☯️

Just a few years ago I read a book about the Asian Arowana in the pet trade called "The Dragon Behind the Glass: A True Story of Power, Obsession, and the World’s Most Coveted Fish". These guys are so prized in certain cultures that people have been murdered to steal their collections and rare color morphs like the platinum sell for over $400,000 dollars. All this because in China they are believed to bring good luck and prosperity. Breeders of these fish guard their prize stock with guards armed with machine guns to prevent rival breeders from stealing or poisoning their fish. Because of this demand these fish are almost functionally extinct in the wild while thousands are bred in captivity to fit the growing demand for them. The journalist who wrote the book traveled through 15 countries in search of a wild Asian Arowana and when she finally managed to discover a wild population she refused to tell anyone where for fear of leading poachers to one of the last refuges of this elusive dragon.

If by "fighting fish" you mean bettas and their relatives, they do not have modified swim bladder "lungs". Anabantoids like bettas and gouramis breathe air using their labyrinth organs, located just rear of their skulls and adjacent to the gills. That means that air-breathing in fish has evolved independently at least twice, which I think is stinkin' rad.

@@asrig3880 you’re right, he doesn’t create comprehensive care guides. However, he ALWAYS mentions things like the general temperature, minimum housing size, and other things that chain pet stores get wrong, especially in regards to betta fish. If anything, betta fish would be a perfect fit for this series considering the misinformation surrounding their care, and would be the ultimate “is __insert animal__ REALLY right for you?” because it would dispel myths as he went through it and show people just how much care betta fish require

And let's not forget the Australian varieties of arowana too. The Jardiner being quite infamous for its aggression relative to its cousins. Nowhere near as desirable as Asian Arowanas, but also not as affordable as their South American peers (Black Arowanas being from same continent like the silvers.) Here in Canada, we have access to all of them and I've seen them up close. Silver Arowanas are a dime a dozen and relatively easy to find schools of young ones for sale. Australian varieties like Jardiner tend to be less common and command slightly higher prices, but you can still find them young. I've only ever seen adult Asian Arowanas where I live. They're crazy expensive, but just so beautiful. I've seen a huge tank that houses several adults of the red variety.

This overall was a pretty good video, however I do have some complaints: 1) Clint didn't mention that there are several different species of arowana , each of them growing a different size. 2) For a silver arowana, as shown in the video, the recommended tank size of 200 gallons is too small, due to the fact that they get around 4ft in length, being the largest arowana. 3) It also should be mentioned that feeding feeders fish is not a good idea, due to the fact that feeder fish are kept in very poor conditions, which lead to them being diseased.

Even if it’s luck, I’d still like to see the description match his words. It’s a shame they’re mistreated, and I hope one day they won’t have to deal with it, but pointing to correct resources is important for care too.

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE how unapologetic Clint is when he is explaining surprising things people don't typically understand about Cladistics. This particular upright Bony Fish-Monkey appreciates a firm grasp of evolutionary biology!!!

There is a useful ratio for arowana tanks. HxWxL = 1HX1.5Hx3H where H is height and equal to average adult size. Example an adult silver in tanks get to be 24 to 30 inches (bigger in pools). So the tank for it should be 24 inches high by 36 inches width and 72 inches long. This is bare minimum fir around 270 gallons (or 300 to include top clearance of around an inch).

Love the fish videos! Would like to see the dojo loach. I kept 6, now 5 after one jumped out. 2 wild types, 2 albino (one jumper), and 2 juvi wild types. I keep them in a 125 cool water tank (around 70f). They're currently with a false synodontis and a green terror. I love how derpy they are. They also fit into the "air breather" category that you seem to be covering, so I think they would be a good fit for the channel.

The ariwana needs alot more space than most people can give them there is a better but similar option The african butterfly fish is basically a more reasonably sized jumping fish they only get about 5-6 inches maximum you just have to feed them alot of live feeders they don't like flake food

Hey Clint! Arowanas are cool but check out African Butterfly Fish. A LOT smaller and while not as active, looks pretty similar and is elaborately decorated with a lot of finnage. They can be put in as small as a 20 gallon long :)
