Thanks man, you have inspired me. Your style of bass synth is just the sound I was looking for for a little music project I'm working on. Now I'm on a quest to find the perfect synth for it. The Odyssey is great, but it's a little more than what I wanted to spend just now. Anyway ... thank you. Keep the videos coming.

Adam Borseti what exactly do you use the output lag for, just to smooth the s/h voltages? are you using it in LFO trig or Key trig?
@AdamBorseti
@AdamBorseti 6 жыл бұрын
mootbooxle I usually dial in a bass sound similar to "Ready or not" by Herbie, but I add a smidgen of S&H with the lag up about half way. Key trigger is important, but I'll send you my patch sheet for my favorite bass sound.

Watching this because the MPC range has a a Virtual Model of an Odyssey, and due to screen real estate sections are split across the screen, which limits the intuitiveness a bit. Great explanation of how to approach, your philosophy. tips like the sample and hold. I also liked the references to key musicians. and instruments emulated, and I believe that was a Jamerson line played early one. Killer playing too, really nailed you left hand technique, and to think live you'll be playing like this as your right comps on the Nord. Exceptional video all round, thank you. (and I paused this about half way to type, so still more to come)

For funk bass I think Arp beats moog. I also think the Odd beats the 2600 mainly because of the simplicity. You didn't mention the portamento, but that can also make things groovy. Thanks for sharing your tips. I found them very helpful.

I've never been close to an actual Odyssey, so it's nice to hear the old lady sing. Is this the KARP one or the actual 70s version? It looks brand new so I'm guessing KARP?
@mootbooxle
@mootbooxle 6 жыл бұрын
bytex666 it's a Korg yeah...I got one of the first white ones as soon as they went on sale, and have used it exclusively on gigs since...hundreds of gigs! And it still stays in tune, sounds great, looks great! It even fell off my stand once! That reliability, combined with the choice of filters and MIDI, makes the Korg ARP Odyssey the one I prefer! I wouldn't trade it for an original MkI! I tested right side by side with my friend's MkI Odyssey and really, I still prefer the new one!

Hi Moot, regarding the famous Herbie's Chameleon bass sound, I found something that I believe to be interesting in his biography "Possibilities". Herbie mentions the following : "We recorded the main session of «Chameleon» at Wally Heider Studios, and I used one of Pat Gleeson’s synthesizers to play that funky bass line. (...) After we recorded the piece, I started to think that the bass line I’d laid down wasn’t punchy enough, so I decided to rerecord it, programming the Minimoog so the notes were shorter. The next day I took the tape to David Rubinson, but when he played that new bass line as an overdub, he forgot to turn off the original track. (...) they actually sounded kind of cool together. "......So, except during live performance, where we can see the Odyssey, now I am not sure to know what is the other synth used on the original record. Seems there is 1 Minimoog + unknown one.... :)

Why not the Model D is an ideal bass machine?
@mootbooxle
@mootbooxle 6 жыл бұрын
ingoodmusic well, probably 80% of the bass on my records comes from a Minimoog. So yes, it is an ideal bass machine...in the studio! For live use, the smaller Odyssey, with its modulation options, is ideal. Just my opinion!

Actually the biggest issue I have, was the patch bay in the back. I saw your patch mod, is it possible I can buy that mod if you make another one, that would really help because I have my ARP backed up against a wall and its really a pain in the ass to even get back there. I have the same ARP model as you, white edition.
