Aleksey, who has a degree in electrical engineering, shares his heart-wrenching journey from stability to homelessness. For over ten months, Aleksey has battled the harsh realities of life on the streets of Miami after losing his job and home. Despite his relentless efforts to find work and rebuild his life, the challenges of homelessness have only multiplied.
Aleksey's story highlights the systemic issues that make escaping homelessness nearly impossible. He recounts the closure of the business he worked for, the tragic loss of his roommate, and the subsequent loss of his home. With nowhere to turn, he reached out for help but found only minimal support. Despite having a degree and a diverse skill set, finding employment has been a daily struggle.
The interview delves into the brutal impact of criminalizing homelessness. Aleksey was arrested simply for being homeless, resulting in the loss of his belongings and job. His story illustrates how such policies exacerbate the cycle of poverty and despair, making it even harder for people to get back on their feet.
Aleksey’s resilience shines through as he talks about his efforts to survive each day, from trying to find work to dealing with the extreme heat and lack of basic necessities. He shares the misconceptions people have about the homeless and the reality that many, like him, are skilled and willing to work but are denied opportunities.
This interview is a powerful reminder of the humanity of those experiencing homelessness. Aleksey’s hope for a better future, his wish for a decent job, and his plea for kindness and understanding are calls to action for us all. Watch and share this video to help spread awareness and change the narrative around homelessness.

About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, childhood trauma, lack of a living wage, or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
This isn’t just talk. Our groundbreaking educational content reaches millions of people every month. Our real and unfiltered stories of homelessness shatter stereotypes, demand attention and deliver a call-to-action that is being answered by governments, major brands, nonprofit organizations, and everyday citizens just like you.
However, there is more work to be done on the road ahead. Homelessness is undoubtedly one of our biggest societal issues today and will only continue to grow if we don’t take action now.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

I became physically disabled after solely raising 3 children in a nice suburb. We lost our home and after a month in hotels (that I paid for) we entered the MA DHCD HomeBase program approximately the day it began. They placed us in a project-type community where my children witnessed things that I hoped they never would. My daughter was raped by two men. I had someone who I thought was a good friend and I became indebted to him. Long story, but as my therapist explained, "I was exploited" and this was several times a week over a period of 3 months. I was so lost that I couldn't even see a way out of it. Fortunately something happened and the answer was so simple. The thing is though, it ruined my life, my self-esteem, my brain (I was super intelligent and I could barely recall my own name). I sought therapy (for the first time in my life) because as I explained it, I felt "like I was going through the motions in life but not ever accomplishing anything". I was diagnosed with PTSD, Major Depressive Disorder and severe anxiety. I saw this therapist only a short while, because I ended up hospitalized for 6 weeks, evicted from the scattered site shelter because I avoided everything and anything relating to housing for fear of becoming homeless again and I did just that. I caused us to be homeless again. Sadly, I can now see people who are homeless, non-drug users, like myself, who can't find their way out of a paper bag because of their PTSD and who caused their own homelessness. My teenaged son and young adult daughters stayed with my sister and when I was released from the hospital, I was on the street. Long story short - it can happen to most of us. I believe that when decisions are made regarding how to deal with the homeless population, people who have been previously chronically homeless should be included in the discussion. Who else could possibly know what we need aside from those who have personally experienced it?

I guess i got really lucky when I lived in my car. Only issue I ever had was a few people being sketchy and shining their high beams at my car at night. But, I'm luckily pretty unshakable, so I guess my lack of a reaction led to them giving up. It sucks how people can't just mind their own business. I was homeless once in Santa Monica . I was running out of money, and knew I was going to be homeless. what saved me was I used my last few dollars to buy a voicemail number service, so I could put down a phone number on applications. I also bought a mail box at a mail boxes etc store so I had an address to put on applications. this was in the 90's before cell phones. once homeless I put that info on applications and got a job as a security guard. I was able to keep clean by walking onto the Santa Monica college campus, pretending to be a student, and showering in the gym locker room. after 3 months of being a security guard I made enough to put a deposit and first months rent on a studio apt and life moved on

It's absurd to criminalise being homeless, as anybody could fall into it through no fault of their own, like Aleksey. Laws against homelessness were recently introduced in the UK, and it's shocking to see that similar laws are also being introduced in other countries. I lived in the same apartment in Munich for 16 years. Two years ago, I lost the apartment after the rent became too expensive due to a renovation. There was nothing that I would have been able to do to stop the renovation. Since then, I've lived in two shelters. In the first one, I lived in a shared room with roommates who were sometimes aggressive. The second shelter is one in which all of the rooms are single rooms, and I was on the waiting list for four months. Many cities have housing shortages and high rents. Munich is one of them, and I get the impression that Miami is too. What do they expect people to do when they can't find an apartment, and there's no room in the shelters? This ridiculous law against homelessness caused Alexey to lose a job.

How tragic! Being arrested for being homeless? Outrageous! Aleksey seems like such a wonderful & decent person too! May the Lord bless & keep Aleksey. May He protect, comfort & strengthen him at all times & in every way! May He bless him with a decent job, home & family, as he so longs for & deserves. May the Lord also bless the many others who are in the same situation or even worse. May God move upon others' hearts, who are in a stronger position, to help these precious folks in any way they can. In His Name. Amen.

This is what I consider to be an exceptional human being, from whom many arrogant people should learn. I had to help so much people that did not need anything at all and I had to deal with the consequences of what this kind of people are willing to do for vanity and greed. I'm so bad at dectecting good people from bad ones, that I can't even get it through my head! In 6 minutes this gentlemen made me realize what is real. With the time and effort and the pain that eats up your time and willingness that I have spent for pointless people, I could have helped so many people like him, I'm fed up to be furious with these rats! If you give a hand to people like this guy, be sure they will offer you both hands in return.

At age 18 my niece was hit by a repeat drunk driver and became a tetraplegic in an instant. No movement from the chest down, no hand movement, limited arm movement, pain each and every day. She worked her butt off to overcome the obstacles put in front of her, worked hard, put herself through law school, graduated with honors, and went on to earn herself a great job. She recently bought her first home, hasn't even turned 30 yet, and did it all from a wheelchair without taking a dime of taxpayer money.

Give the poor man a break! He was working. He wasn’t selling drugs or doing anything illegal. More Americans are only a paycheck away from landing in this same dilemma. We’re allowing all these immigrants homes and opportunities yet we arrest citizens for being homeless!?! We need to take care of our own dammit! Our government needs to stop sending hundreds of billions of dollars to other countries when we are arresting homeless veterans. Sometimes I think the world is coming to an end, more often I pray it will! 🤷‍♂️

In my opinion, safe, secure, simple housing is vital for people who are actually trying to overcome their homelessness. Why is that so much to ask? Even having the ability to name an address for a cheap capsule hotel, or internet cafe (like they have in Japan) as their home address, should count, so people have that step-up out of the rough sleeping gutter they have landed in through no fault of their own. They should qualify for social welfare payments etc., so they can at least maintain a basic human existence to allow them to make their way into the job market. Isn't it somebody's job to sort this out? If not, why not? How hard is it to make something like this work? It makes me wonder if something as basic as this is so easy for us to see as a workable option, why don't those in the position to make this a reality put this on their priority list. It's not even an impossibility that the person in charge of a major corporation could end up reduced to the same homeless disaster as anyone else. This is not okay. More needs to be done. Those in charge must stop sitting on their hands and get this sorted.

I sub teach and some days are more challenging than others but I am good at it and there is always work during school year and some work in the summer. Plus it is flexible, so you can take time off without penalty. Only down side is no health ins, but same if self employed or working at some corporate jobs .
