Love the little detail on how Abbott was always the second to arrive, as if he was always late. He wasn't late; he was dreading his own death. Would you want to go to a room where you know you are going to die?

On the other hand, the heptapod was fully aware that its death would lead to humanity uniting and then saving its entire species in the future. It basically traded its life for the lives of its offspring and entire species. I'm sure it wasn't looking forward to dying but I would imagine knowing that makes it less of a negative experience.

This isn’t a movie about aliens it’s a movie about humanity. I saw this in theaters and it was one of the first films in years where I was literally *gobsmacked* by the twist. It gets even better with a subsequent rewatch because Amy Adam’s performance goes from great to incredible. The first time you see her reactions to the “flashbacks” of Hannah it always feels a bit _off_ but once you learn the twist it makes so much more sense.

All sci-fi is sociology with an alien mask on it; it's about the concept of Otherness, and thus, who are "we", what's good, what's valuable... So, philosophy and psychology (the study of the psyche and psyche means soul, not brain)..

@@アキコ2003 I think for some people, once they start crying and getting fully emotional they have a much harder time staying focused and engaged with the movie/story, at least for a little while. And so they try to keep composure so they don't miss anything. I agree that *some* people seem to treat crying like some sort of weakness or bad thing, but I don't get that sense here. Plus, I've seen both of them cry in plenty of other reactions, so they clearly don't have an issue with it! :)

@@dlweiss Yeah, when I went in to watch Coco a few months after my mother's death, I knew it was going to be... a thing. I still tried to keep the bubblering ugly cry to a minimum because despite all the feels, I was really enjoying the movie and it's artistry and wanted to appreciate it.

Conceptually, "Arrival" stands along with the best of classic sci-fi stories in my opinion. It's right up there with stories by H. G. Wells, Philip K. Dick, Isaac Asimov, or Arthur C. Clarke. Applause for Ted Chiang and Denis Villeneuve.

Not very many "twist" movies actually get me...I generally pick up on it well before the reveal. "Who is this child?" absolutely floored me. Such a great, unique film, and unlike most "twist" movies this one holds up remarkably well to multiple viewings (I'd argue it's even better once you know what's coming).

I know! Though I was even more floored that this whole movie is basically teh Sapir-Whorf hypothesis writ large. "We're going to make a suspenful sci-fi thriller based on LINGUISTICS!"

The Arrival is one of the most underrated films of all times. Despite it has a good 8.4 in Rotten Tomatoes and a review that says that it is a "most-see experience", it just had a worldwide box office around $200 million (compare that with Avengers Endgame or Avatar box office). It win just one Oscar (to sound design). I understand people like lighter stuff (that's why the business is called "entertainment") but I appreciate the way you two loved the movie and your insight about it. This is a little masterpiece eclipsed by big Hollywood productions.

I cannot even put into words how much I enjoy this film. It is the most thought-provoking, deep, and powerful movie I have ever watched. I loved how it took its time, how I still cry at the opening (and the end), and how intriguing it was to see them figure out how to communicate with other-worldly beings. I get chills with every viewing, just amazing. ✨~Caroline

Saw this three times in theaters. Once, alone. Second time, dragged some friends along. Third time, went again because my friends needed to see it again to put it all together. It's not like it's Inception (in terms of, some people found it difficult to follow), but the second time you watch the movie, you're watching a different movie.

This one moves me to tears every time. Not weepy tears, but those slow-rollers that creep out of you like the first time you see the Milky Way on a mountaintop at high elevation on a cloudless night with no light pollution. Stunned sheer awe that's almost too much to deal with. It's insane to think that a movie inspires such a reaction, it just does.

Watching this on my own in a darkened theater when it came out remains one of my most transcendent cinematic experiences. To say I was in awe is an understatement. This is science fiction for adults, and I loved every minute of it. Glad you both loved it too.

This is an important story and a really well crafted movie. Since you guys are experienced with non-linear video editing, think about the parallel between your non-linear editing perspective (viewing the whole timeline at once) relative to seeing time/your life in a non-linear fashion (seeing the future, past and present all at once). I'm a translator and an interpreter, and this is one of my favorite movies. Language is such a beautiful thing and yet there are some that by choice restrain themselves to only one. Language, and how it works, often times helps you understand the way the people from whom it originates think. My personality definitely changes in some ways depending on the language I speak, and seeing that shown here in this way was just beautiful. This film is a masterpiece.

After the next Dune movie Denis Villeneuve is supposed to do RENDEZVOUS WITH RAMA with is a book by Arthur C. Clarke that I thought could never be made into a movie but after what Denis did with Dune I can't wait to see it what he'll do with it.

Louise's premonitions of life with Hannah reliably come and get more intense as she gets closer to the aliens. Like the first time she touched the glass - that launched her into precognition right away. The clues are all there.

The aliens in this movie bear a striking resemblance to those described in 'Slaughterhouse 5' by Kurt Vonnegut, including how they look, think and write. The main character, who is abducted by them, also learns to think like them, just as the main character of this movie. The book is written in a disjoined way with the narrative moving, seemingly at random, between the main character's life as a soldier in the Second World War, his life as a dentist after the war, his life on the alien's planet after he is abducted, and his life after he is returned. When I first saw this movie I thought it was based on that book but it turns out it was another short story.

This was one of two Amy Adams movies that came out that fall, and along with "Nocturnal Animals," they both involved her walking around nice and spacious houses with big windows in deep sadness, contemplation, and glasses of wine.

That military guy "Agent Halpern" 18:22 is an example for someone whos brain is rewired by military language. The more you study and think in military jargon, the more your brain becomes stiff and unable to look at the world from a non-aggressive perspective: "If you have a hammer, everything's a nail." His language became a tool for him to see the world only as a battlefield.

It’s a great conversion of the short story, the actors did a great job with it. Fantastic movie. A great human story, asking an eternal question, if you knew your entire life, would you make a change to prevent heartache, that would deny the existence of a child.

@x Villeneuve said that Louise has free will in the film, so that she made a choice is as close to a correct answer there is. It's of course up to each viewer to decide on whether to make up one's own mind on how to interpret it, but it won't be something that can be stated objectively.

@@Evil_Peter Well, I guess either the aliens banked on the probability that humans would actually end up helping them in 3000 years, or the universe is deterministic. It doesn't seem to me like the aliens are seeing all potential futures imaginable and just hedging their bets trying to make as many of those futures where they survive happen, it really feels like the intent is that the universe is deterministic. If it is, then I suppose it is a question on what free will means in such a universe. Does it remove the concept of free will? If not, how so?

The scene where Louise explains to her daughter that she told her dad something he didn't like, etc., is heart-wrenching (not breaking) but the thing that really stood out to me on subsequent viewings was this: Ian apparently said to Louise that she had made the wrong decision, but I don't think Louise sees alternative futures (like Paul in Dune). I think she only sees her entire timeline out of sequence. If that is right then her decision was no decision at all but the path she was always going to take. And if that is true for both Louise and the aliens then it is probably also true for everyone whether they can see their futures or not. And that means this tale is based in a rigidly deterministic universe without the common conception of "free will". But that also makes me re-evaluate what free will really is. Maybe it is not the ability to "choose" futures from a menu. Maybe it is simply an experiential INGREDIENT in the only dish on offer.

I maintain the title "Arrival" does not reference the aliens showing up; it refers to the 'arrival' of that time-consciousness in Louise's mind. That reverie where she tells Ian to hold-off a moment, where she sees herself teaching the Heptapod Language, when she looks at the book she will write with the CD inside...THAT is the moment the language and the consciousness ARRIVES. And she states "I can read it." The arrival in Louise of the Heptapod Language changed the world. It wasn't 'learned' in pieces, it arrived in full. Remember, the message from one of the other ships was "There is no time". They meant that time is not linear, there is no past or future. There is only now, the present. The aliens move awareness anywhere along one's experience, back and forward.

Thanks for the pre-reaction warning. I can't think of any other film that needs that more. That said..... I love watching other people see this film for the first time. Watching them put the pieces together as the story unfolds. Waiting for the eyes to go wide & the figurative lightbulb go off in their head. This is my favorite film so far - unseating 2 other films that long shared that spot. I'd mention what they were, but they might somehow spoil THIS film since each has an element that is a core to this film. 2001 is a revered first contact film, but for my money, Arrival is infinitely better. There is no pretense or ostentation yet it captures "alien-ness" better than any film I've seen WITHOUT being deliberately obtuse (like 2001). With effort, the aliens in this film CAN be understood - at least enough to make the story work. From the look & sound to the performances, this film gets everything just right. Thanks for letting us share the experience of your first time experiencing this. It's the next best thing to discovering it oneself. BTW - Am I the only one who got serious 9/11 flashback chills during the opening minutes of this film?

I'm not sure that it would work for reaction videos due to the subtitles, but I strongly recommend that you see Denis Villeneuve's French-language Canadian films that he made before bursting onto the scene making films in English. Particularly, I strongly recommend Incendies which I saw back when it came out about 11 or 12 years ago and it's haunted me since. I've seldom been so shocked and moved by an ending.

I'm always surprised at how little this movie is mentioned when making recommendations in Denis Villeneuve's library... but then I figure that it would fit some sort of international movie category since as far as I know it's never been dubbed, it only exists in its original languages and subtitles. I think this movie's ending is as impactful as Incendies' was, even if the delivery is not the same. A definite must, it's quite the experience too!

one of only a handful of sci-fi movies ever made that's truly thought-provoking and has this level of maturity and realism. the introspective and philosophical approach is wonderful. beautiful directing and pacing, great use of music, and such an interesting, original take on an alien encounter

The first scenes shown in the movie are actually the "End" of the movie and the scenes shown at the end of the movie are actually the beginning of the movie. In conclusion this coincides with the theme of Time not being Linear.

This is a wonderful sci-fi suspense with a fantastic twist ending, where a linguist must figure out how to communicate with an alien species before the world rips itself apart over the species' arrival... and that's the B plot.

This one took a couple of viewings for me to totally appreciate. It's one of those movies, like 2001: A Space Odyssey that improves with multiple viewings. Incidentally, is that a movie that is on your radar to react to? If not it really needs to be. It's also one of the few movies I recommend not going into completely blind.

Concerning non-existing languages being made up for movies and TV, there are some other shows that come to my mind. One from my childhood (1974) was a Saturday morning live action sci-fi adventure show called "The Land of the Lost". They had a language professor from UCLA create an entire usable language for 11 year old Phillip Paley, who played a young "Pacuni" (cave man) on the show.

I LOVE this movie. I thought I was getting a sci-fi thriller going into it, but instead I got a massive brain adjustment. I was so unprepared for this movie and, honestly, I think that’s the only way to watch and enjoy this film. If you know too much going into it without actually seeing it, it just destroys the experience entirely. Brilliant, BRILLIANT film. I always recommend people see this at least once in their lives. Funny story too… first time I made my mother watch it with me as soon as she saw the ships she said “that looks like a giant suppository.” I had to stop the movie and walk off for a few minutes to stop laughing. I just couldn’t lol I love my mother and her lack of a filter but that just broke me so bad lol she fell in love with the movie afterwards but I had to explain it to her at least a dozen times (I even went and gave her a visual crash course on string theory just so she could wrap her head around some stuff). It’s so underrated by some people. There just really isn’t quite another movie out there like it. I compare it to Space Odyssey a lot for that reason. It’s just one of those movies you have to watch and experience to really understand

I heard from some other reactors and one guy on a podcast about how the atmosphere and the tension for the characters at the start of the movie was like how it was for people when 9/11 happened, and the day after. The uncertainty, the anxiety, "is it okay to make jokes anymore?" "What the hell the going on?" Hearing commentary like that really stuck with me

Love love love this movie😌🙏 There are a few perfect Hollywood movies. There are very very few for which I have to “plan.” As I have re-watched this several times, here is that specific plan: -house empty -nighttime, all interior lights off but the tv -go #1 -comfy pillows, blanket -large beverage which I will cry out in both anticipation and real time with the events -phone turned fully off [“Oh, you will *not* be interrupting this…”] -1000w sound system up to movie theater volume level -[after] watch all closing credits to honor the transcendence of the exquisite score

Humanity will survive only if we learn we have more in common than differences and that if we will ever set aside and leave behind our long bloody history of self destruction, we could actually evolve and maybe one day leave this grain of dust of ours and explore the infinity of life beyond time and space. Me as a movie lover and everything sci fi fantasy related really appreciated this one and much more because you shared your experience watching it with us. I've seen this film 3 times in it's entirety and probably 4 or 5 more times as reactions, and it never fails to make me emotional. Just brilliant sci-fi. As far as another Denis film... I have to say Blade Runner 2049, of course, but you really should see the original film first if you haven't.

Actually, there was much more Mandarin dialog in the scene where she called the general. Here's everything that was spoken in the scene. He answered and said "Hello, who are you?" Louise said: "General, I'm in the American camp." "General, your wife sent me a message in my dream." "She said, you should use your courage to help save the world." "War doesn't make heroes, only orphans and widows." His final words are "Xièxiè" (Thank you)

This movie was amazing in a theater. So glad I decided to see it last minute there. The sound design blew my mind with surround sound speakers. So many times my hairs were standing up while I had goose bumps up and down my arm. Also, someone came up with the alien language, as in you could actually us it if you wanted. Granted not sure how to make ink appear out of my hands.

@ 10:17 you noted that they communicate with coffee stains, I know it was a joke but you were spot on. The symbols were done by Wolfram Alpha's creator Stephen Wolfram; everyone in the sciences knows that name, he couldn't come up with an original orthography for the movie, then either his wife left a coffee stain, or she presented him with a coffee stain, and he ended up using that. He explicitly says this in an interview somewhere on KZfaq.

Absolutely amazing movie. The only problem I have with it, is that I'm afraid I'll annoy my friends and family when I ask them if they watched it yet for the 45th time.

The problem with such a movie is that if you push too much for people to see it, youll taint their experience with it. Say I know you really like Memento, 6th Sense, Fight Club, The Usual Suspects, and you come harassing me to watch this movie, thats way different than me stumbling across it on my own, or your brother who likes Transformers, Marvel movies, and Mission Impossible 2 recommending it to me. I know the feeling all too well, my brother, sister, and I are all fairly big on movies, and depending on which of them recommends me a movie and also HOW they recommend it, tells me a lot about what im about to watch, which grew to be an issue, before we started very sneakily using counterintelligence and other deception to fuck with expectations. Its a whole thing now.

My first time seeing this movie I had some much anxiety, braced for the worst until the realization near the end. At the same time, absolutely glued to the screen in anticipation. With the lingering thought that the space ship looks like a watermelon seed.

I love that movie, i remember seeing it at the theater, few sniffles at the end too, The message is slow but it builds up to a meaningful and intelligent one too. Communication is the key, the heptapods knew us, and divided the weapon to 12 so everyone work together, and we should in real life Cheers from Egypt ❤

The Heptapods sacrificed too- they knew everything that would happen - including that those jerkass soldiers would plant the bomb that kills one of them. Abbott gave his life for the mission. It's worth noting that the Heptapods understood English (and likely all the other languages) before arriving. They communicate without the computer slates when they bring her on board. The ship design is like an orange - we see only one segment, but put together, the twelve parts would make a sphere (I think!).

I had heard of this movie, so I looked for "Arrival" (2016) on the "premium cable TV channels." I found it on FX, instead. As the movie unfolded, I got "Quantum Leap," or "Slaughterhouse-Five" (1972) vibes. The concept of Space/Time as circular is a rare thing in movies, as it is a "Hard Science" thing. It's an Experience, rather than a movie, with imaginative Alien visitors who don't say: "take me to your leader."

This movie is so underrated, and I think it's because it flies over the heads of so many people. When the concept of discovering non linear time is explored is what is in many ways a non linear movie, it becomes confusing for people that think "too linearly". Also, I think the lack of action in a 2016 scifi movie probably lost a lot of people, as they think scifi and go straight to laser guns and stuff, not science meets philosophy and humanity, using concepts like the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis in such ways. One advantage I guess I have is apart from being a scifi nut, I am also bilingual, and it does help you see how language can change concepts and thoughts, and helps to appreciate the movie in that aspect. As I said, it's underrated, but I can understand why it's underrated.

Sometimes I think our ignorance is a blessing. I'm not sure if this is actually a gift. Well, perhaps it's a gift to humanity, but not on a personal level. I faced cancer twice (I'm now in remission) and one of the things I've worked with my phycologist is that we don't know our final days. Imagining a death due cancer it's a thing that still causes me huge anxiety. And then I remember the words "I don't know, nobody knows". But on the other hand, imagining myself as a terminal patient makes me think that I'd have time to accept, like lots of patients do. So it's a philosophical exercise and that's why it hits hard. Thinking about our end (and the end of the ones we love) makes us anxious and powerless. But maybe until death is actually there, on the horizon. Perhaps then it makes us humbler and wiser. But it you ask me now, I don't want to be forced to work myself to become humbler and wiser. So, again, on a personal level, I'm not sure if it's actually a gift. I love language too, I'm Brazilian and now I'm studying French. ❤️

Super reaction. No surprises there. If you re-watch Arrival and are looking for additional "layers", pay attention to what's written on the whiteboard when she explains to the General what's involved in learning how to communicate with the aliens. In addition to its face value in the story, it's a message addressed directly to each individual movie-goer that's hiding in plain sight, challenging us (by the end) to ask ourselves what choice WE would make if we were in her place... If you're at all brave enough to react on screen to an even more intense emotional gut-punch from a Villeneuve film, it would be hard to beat his "Incendies": the most horrific, beautiful "Mother's Day" film ever...

Interesting, I'd definitely be one of those people lined up to see the UFO down there on the highway. I'd 100% drop everything in my life and go right there. I don't even care if they turned hostile like in all the other movies, it'd be worth it to see advanced, intelligent life from another planet. It's the one question I've always wanted answered, I'd be there in a heartbeat. Anyways, fantastic reaction. This movie is amazing and utterly devastating.

Once a month I check who has uploaded a watch for this and then watch with them and then go through and see if they also watched my other 9 favorite movies of all time. I’m really hoping you guys saw the other 9 or at least 5 of them
