You have to remember that Louise no longer sees time as linear, so her daughter Hannah will always be with her.

LOL. Radiation had nothing to do with it. It's just a rare disease. She was not blamed for the disease itself. She told Hannah that it was her fault her dad looks at her differently. She told him that Hannah would die. Also, he apparently believes that having a child who you knew would die young, was the wrong choice.
@johnmavroudis2054
@johnmavroudis2054 2 ай бұрын
I disagree. I think there's every chance that the Hannah got this "rare disease" because one of her parents were exposed to alien atmosphere. "Radiation" in this case just means an unknown thing. That could be a very real consequence.
@Perfectly_Cromulent351

There was no radiation on the ship. Ian was mad because Louise knew from the very beginning that their daughter would die young and she withheld that information. Ian felt betrayed because now he has to live with the knowledge that his daughter is soon going to die and there’s nothing he can do about it, which is why he’s pushing her away. I’m not saying he’s justified in doing so, but it’s a completely understandable reaction. He said she made the wrong choice because, if given the choice, he wouldn’t have decided to have the kid. Louise represents those of us who choose to embrace things that bring joy, but are ephemeral and will inevitably end in sadness, whereas Ian represents those who avoid those situations entirely.

Right. Her choice was to have Hannah anyway. That was the decision she made in the film's last line.
@obelisk21
@obelisk21 Ай бұрын
In fairness to Ian, their perceptions are vastly different. To Louise, she has already lived a life of love and joy with her daughter before she even had her so it would be more like asking a parent sitting literally on their child's deathbed if it was worth it. To Ian, Hannah was just an idea so it will not have any emotional impact for him since he can't experience non-linear time like Louise.

The title of the film could be every bit about Hannah's arrival as it is of the aliens. They are all linked. Kind of what came first, chicken or the egg, thing. Great reaction to this epic film. Some other BRILLIANT films to check out: "PLEASANTVILLE," "CHILDREN OF MEN," "GRAVITY," "ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND," and "STRANGER THAN FICTION." All of these films feature brilliant stories, acting, direction, cinematography, and effects. Once you see any of these, you'll never forget them. Cheers!

Anyone catch that she wrote a book about the alien method of communication after all of this? Once she understands what Abbot has told her and knows about ‘the weapon’, she can go into the future and read what she wrote. Or am I mistaken?

The opening narration makes us think Louise has been "seeing" her daughter even before the aliens came. But like many stories with opening narration, it can sometimes be in the voice of the main character in the far future. The only think I cannot figure out is how Louise could afford that fancy house on the lake on the salary of a linguistics professor, and why Ian came to live at that same house after they got married.

She didn't remember in her flash forward with the general because she hadn't made the call yet. Most people miss the ending part where she said she knew why her husband left and then the following flash forward shows her dad still with her. She never told him of her sickness the second time around so he didn't leave

I don't think Hannah's illness and death was meant to have anything to do with exposure on the alien ship (the army doctor saw no signs of anything). It was just a "working part" of the plot, and Louise's future choice (or lack thereof). The only weak point in the plot logic is what you pointed out: Once she "saw" (in the present) what Gen. Shiang tells her in the future, she should have already known it before they actually met. And if you made such an important call - at gunpoint - you'd probably remember it 18 months later. But still a helluva movie !

I love this movie and I enjoyed your reaction a lot! Keep in mind though, that she didn't really 'make a decision' to have her daughter anyway. She saw those future events in her child's life so we know they happened. If that was not the true outcome those visions would not have been experienced. She would have seen other events in those visions...

Exposure to the heptapods has no bearing on what happens to Hannah. And the beginning of the movie is not the beginning of events. And in Louise doesn't remember in the moment until she see the future and use that info present. So, in a sense, the future has to happen in order for the present to occur.

I agree that Hannah's illness was incidental and just served as a central plot element. Esp because the medical/safety team specifically mentioned no radiation or other hazards detected. But a lot of reactors (no pun intended) infer otherwise.

Great movie and reaction MoonPoppers! :) But I just want to point out that there were no flashbacks in this movie. She was "seeing" the future events including all her daughter scenes but more like she was "remembering" them. This is why she felt confused and did not know what was happening to her. Remember, even the other characters were worried for her. Because she didn't have the full "gift" yet at those points in the movie. In other words, her memories were being created at the same time as they were happening in her future time, because of the "gift" of the aliens in perceiving time as non-linear (which can only be acquired after understanding their language). So as soon as she glimpsed that language book that she authored or the General's phone number, her memory in the present of knowing how to understand the language and knowing the cell number became reality because both events are happening at the same time (when observed by a third-party, us audience in this case).

So funny story about when the trailer dropped for this movie. After Amy Adams was in the Man of Steel movie, and then also in Batman v Superman movie, the world wasn't sure what the DCEU was planning to do next, And I believe it was revealed that one of the characters from Man of steel was secretly a Shapeshifter. So when I saw this movie trailer the first thing that came into my mind was that this had to be for a "Martian Manhunter" movie in the DCEU. And I was very disappointed when it I found out it was not connected to DC at all.
