@@brycecanady1874 watch chinese with jessie's video on this, she explains that its an idiom, and has the full translation of the conversation from Louise's side. She says: "General, I'm from the American camp. General, your wife sent me a message in a dream. You should use courage to help save the world. The birds they usually use is a canary. “Canaries in the coal-mine” is a common phrase, as canaries are sensitive to environmental changes, they were perfect to use for miners to take underground. They outlawed using them in the 90’s and use electronics instead.
@lawrenceallen8096

They weren't especially sensitive to "environmental changes." They were sensitive to dangerous gasses and high particulate matter in the air that were dangerous to humans. But if one believes they were sensitive to "climate change," well, there are still billions of them around so I guess our climate is OK.

I was coming here to say the exact same things, in only slightly different words. Great minds think alike, am I right, am I right👍😊??? I didn't know about outlawing them until you said, though my recent research says it ended in 1986 for both Britain and the U.S., just to clarify. Great bit of info though, and much appreciated 😊. For anyone else that wants to know ... They also used other animals in mining scenarios like mice, but canaries were the animal of choice due to the fact that they need to take in air when breathing in and out, and store it in special sacs for later use. This is so they can fly higher up where the air is thinner. Anyway, this peculiarity is what made them a better "early warning system" for miners.

Kudos for correctly guessing the purpose of the bird. I’ve seen other reactions to this movie in which the reactors were also unfamiliar with the concept of canaries in coal mines and they thought that the bird was food for the aliens or something stupid like that.

I’d argue it is a love story, just not explicitly a romantic love story. At the core was a parent’s love for their child (selfless as it should be)-what the aliens tapped into, outside time, to communicate with Louise.

There are plenty of women who while pregnant find out things about the baby will have "complications" that will to most be seen as bad or negative & yet still have them which I agree is brave but nothing new. In the story it's based on, "Story of Your Life" by Ted Chiang, she lives longer (25 years or there about), but that would have been difficult for the movie to portray. But yes, she chose to give her daughter a beautiful life - sharing poetry with the world etc. She may died young, but it was still a life precious to her mother.

@@AgentOccam The story was much more wonderful than the movie. It didn't have the cliche military plot where Louise uses her knowledge of the future to change the future. My understanding of Chiang's story is that once you learn the heptapod's language, and are able to see the future, you lose the desire to change the future, you accept everything that is going to happen. That is why she had her child.

@CChissel

I like how it basically says that, your perception of the world around you is mostly based on the language you use to describe it and interact with it. Which is quite true, to a certain extent. Language is very important, the inner voice or inner monologue, without which we would be incapable of complex and abstract thought. People who have never learned to speak are severely stunted in regards to intelligence, never maturing or growing mentally past a certain age, around 10-12, if that. Understanding language is the gateway towards intelligence and higher thought.

We already kinda understand Time very differently from other Earth life, Its a Human thing... most animals dont have much of an independent concept of 'the future', some instinctively prepare for future events as far as we know like squirrels hording nuts etc... but animals that can do as humans can and project ourselves forward into a theoretical future is more or less nil (as far as we know, and definitely not on the time scales a typical adult human can). Its both a great gift... and a curse, given we therefore all know we will eventually die (even if we dont usually think about it), and we know the future will continue on afterwards, but at the same time we can imagine in the present what will happen in-between and even after even projecting forward to the lives of our offspring.

@@NZBigfoot I'm glad you threw that in parenthetically - "as far as we know". Because until such time as we learn to communicate in a more sophisticated fashion with other animals, we can't possibly know what their REAL understanding of anything is. Some species do exhibit signs of having a greater or lesser degree of self-awareness and some may, in fact, have a concept of time; of "future". "Abbot is death process" had me tearing up so badly when I first watched this. It was such an unnecessary death, and it angered me because we all know humanity would do something like that, if we ever made contact with aliens. I never expected the story to have such an emotional impact, but it's one of my favorite sci-fi films. (It also made me want to study to become a linguist or language expert). Louise choosing to live with the choices she knew she would make was so heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time. Lovely reaction, as always, Dasha!

I love this movie for so many reasons. The idea that space travel is possible when you can time travel, is such a great idea. Time travel would make crossing the galaxy possible without the negative side affects incurred with moving faster than light. We could travel to other solar systems and return back without finding the world aged faster than we did. We could travel to anywhere in the galaxy not by actually moving, just by stepping out of time and waiting for the galaxy to move instead. Based on the information in the movie, that is my assumption of how the aliens were able to travel to Earth.

When I was a kid, my dad took me to see Close Encounters of the Third Kind. I was about 8 years old and I had already seen Star Wars. I didn’t get it at the time and couldn’t figure out why my dad loved it so much. Because of my age, I couldn’t appreciate the ideas of what the movie was trying to get across. Plus, it didn’t have lasers and stuff. 😄 When i was older, a teenager, I saw it again and it completely blew me away. What struck me so much greater was the process of understanding and trying to figure out communication. I often go back to the tonal “conversation” with the aliens and marvel at it. When I saw this movie in the theaters, I was thinking that my appreciation for this film is what I would have had for Close Encounters if I had been able to understand it. I was especially fascinated by the attempt at tying to understand their language despite having no background in languages from other planets. Where does one even begin? 👍🏼

Dasha - “Out-take”: you may be combining two concepts in words (“outlook” and “take”) and making a new meaning fir a word that already has a conventional meaning in English. "Out-takes" are parts of tv shows or movies that were not part of the final product (nor were they ever intended to be) and are, instead, portions/bits of the cast and crew goofing around, misreading their lines, telling jokes in the moment, etc. The best words to substitute for your “out-take”, I think, are “idea”, “notion”, “interpretation”, or simply “take” (and certainly there are others, as well). Each of these substituting words can be used to mean what I think you are trying to convey, but also have subtly different meanings from each other. Of these words, the most understandable would be, I believe, “take”. “Take”, in this instance, is an informally used word, and means “a variation on a theme” - as in, for example: “I like this filmmaker’s *take* on humans encountering outer-space aliens. It’s very unique and original”! If anyone else would like to explain this better than my poor attempt, please do!

I posted this on your community tab, but thought I might as well echo it here. Here are two films I think you'll find particularly enjoyable. _The Twelve Chairs_ (1970) Directed by Mel Brooks it was adapted by him from Ilf and Petrov's classic, Soviet-era, satirical novel. While the novel has been adapted to the screen twenty times, and even as an opera (albeit unfinished) by Shostakovich, I think that Brooks's film is the best English-language version. _Love and Death_ (1975) Written and directed by Woody Allen, it is a parody of Russian literature. Starring Allen and Diane Keaton it is set, like Tolstoy's well-known novel, during the Napoleonic wars, but parodies many other authors as well. It also has a great score, all the music drawn from works by Prokofiev.

Honestly I was hooked before the Aliens even showed up! - the tone, the cast, the musical score, everything is just perfect and it's great to have an intelligent Sci-fi film that makes you think as you watch it unfold, well worth a repeat viewing or 3! There was a love story in there too!- and a dilemma: having seen the future & knowing Hannah would sadly die was Louise right to still have her?, to tell Ian what she knew after the fact knowing how he'd feel & that he'd leave?- It was something of a debate when I first watched this with friends, but I think already seeing the future, Louise also saw how much joy Hannah brought to their lives & how much they in turn gave to her- she'd already fallen in love with the daughter she hadn't had yet regardless of the outcome, it couldn't have happened any other way

It took awhile for my brain to wrap around this film and how the concept of time is like a finished mosaic that can be viewed and/or experienced in linear and non-linear fashion within a single timeline (unlike the avengers' endgame with multiple timelines). What cooked my noodle is the concept of ensuring a specific end by, i don't want to say manipulating, being aware of the means in which to get there. There are key events within a timeline that produces, in combination, a specific result. Being aware (or in this case, actually seeing them) of these events helped guide her to make sure they happened in order to save humankind and subsequently down the line, save an alien race. But the events are necessarily experienced in chronological order for her. Still makes my brain hurt.

You're wrong, the movie is all about love. The first future memories she has is of her child. Her love for her child traversed time and space and helped her to gain more access to the future.

Makes more sense when she says to her baby when she's born "Come back to me" and then when she's dying she says "You came back to me" (or it's the other way around, can't fully remember)

The part about the word "kangaroo" actually meaning "I don't understand" is a myth. The Native Australian (the Guugu Yimithirr people) word "gangurru" refers to eastern grey kangaroos.

This is one of the best movies ever made and even today i cry at that ending. I am shocked that the ending didn't hit you. Knowing she is about to lose her child and husband all while Max Ritcher is playing is heartbreaking.

This was based off a short story from Ted Chiang, who quickly became one of my favorite authors after seeing this. Totally recommend checking him out if you like this kind of story!

I watched this movie as an end-of-the-year treat in a film class in high school, and I loved it despite my mild astroxenophobia (fear of extraterrestrials. The logic behind "remember the future" made so much sense in my opinion, but I do disagree about how using the Heptapods' "written" language would enable one to become psychic. For one thing, language is invented, so the Heptapods would not be able to speak a language without the ability that can only be acquired by learning aforementioned language. Additionally, human languages use complete "shapes" as written language without psychic abilities. Written Mandarin or Japanese, for example, or even Egyptian hieroglyphics. What I'm saying is, people can visualize a shape, or shapes, with out seeing the future. Regardless, it's a great movie. "She's a very dedicated employee, *eh*?" The sound of Dahsa subtly reminding us that she lives in Canada. With the whole language theme, I was kind of hope Dasha might recall some of her experiences learning English, but in any case, this seems like a good video for me to say that I admire how well you speak English, Dasha, and I hope I can some day speak German (my second- well, one-and-a-halphth -language) as well as you speak English- Englisch- Angliyshiy.

I remember the day that the western press reported the Chernobyl disaster. I was in college on my way to school for afternoon classes. I got there and parked and just kept listening to the radio. Didn't go to class that day. I was spooked.

So nice to see a some what intellectual sci fi movie. Tired of aliens with an IQ of 2, traveling across the galaxy to eat people. Besides either they have an IQ of 2 or can travel across the galaxy…not both!

When the early explorers started exploring America, they asked a tribe of Indians what the name was of another tribe. They said the other tribe was Comanche. That wasn't their name, that was a description. The word translated to enemy or stranger.

31:24 I understand why Ian would be upset with her. She had a little girl with him knowing the child wouldn’t live. However, if you step back and think about it logically that is what people do everyday. We form relationships with others that we know will end through death or dissolution. We also give birth to children that we know sooner or later will die. The heptapods gave humanity a great gift to see the future. I can only imagine how such an ability would change us.
