Arriving HOME after 5 months CYCLING across EUROPE | Bikepacking Europe Ep. 19

Untraveled Roads

Жыл бұрын

The last week of cycling across Europe started in Romania. Leaving Timisoara was as scary as cycling in the city and I couldn't have left Romania without another dog attack, haha.
As soon as I crossed the border to Hungary I felt relieved to escape the crazy drivers and dog attacks. It is weird, it is just a border, a small piece of land, but lots can change by crossing it.
Every day during this week I felt weird.
It felt good to cycle through Hungary, Austria and Slovakia again, see the the same familiar EV6 route and the same places I passed 150 days ago when I was starting my bike tour across Europe. I also felt like I wanted to stop there, or turn back, not go to the old life I had.
This is the hardest thing for me: going back to a "normal" life after feeling absolute freedom for 5 months.
What was supposed to be an easy cycling week, it turned out to be quite challenging, both physically and mentally. If you want to find out why, join me in this adventure, join me for the last stretch of a bikepacking trip I will never forget.

I really enjoyed watching your ride. Different countries, different roads, houses, cultures. An epic adventure. And then to hear all the hardship you had to deal with. Fixing the issue and continue. It seems simple, but it's not. A job well done

I really enjoyed hearing your self-reflection and thoughts at the end of the video. Generally, the fact that you shared your emotions so openly in your bikepacking series has made your videos very relatable and they really help me to prepare myself mentally for my first solo bikepacking tour - thank you for taking us, the viewers, along on your journey. I enjoyed every video of this series tremendously!

3:50 Banat had ethnic German population, many of those villages between Timisoara /Temeschwar/ and present Hungarian border had ethnic German majority back when this area belonged to Austria-Hungary

I would avoid those busy roads as much as possible. There were several near misses on your ride. On komoot, these are marked as yellow/orange. If it's like 100meter, then to be honest, it's not that big of a deal, but anything more I really try to avoid. In my country, the Netherlands, a cyclist is not even allowed to cycle there. But yes, the Netherlands seems to be the exception. If you have a gravel-bike chosing unpaved roads, or roads which take longer, more touristy are more relaxed. On the other hand, ... the distance then also increases A LOT. It's not easy, I know.

Hey, ye generally I fully agree on the trip some countries were exceptions like along the coast in Croatia where you could not really escape or in my experience the yellow roads in Albania were safer than the smaller ones. In Romania, I tried to switch eventually, which proved as the better decision. I think countries like Austria and the Netherlands (even though I only biked in and around cities) make it way easier to not go on the bigger roads. With less stress and a nicer experience. I need to admit during the tour I got big respect for road cyclists, they have nerves made out of steel

@@UntraveledRoadsOfficial And even in my country, the Netherlands, where people would agree its super-safe, probably the safest in the world, still cyclists get hit. And then they lay on the asphalt with a broken jaw and blood all over the place. Either the car-ist or the bike-ist do something stupid. Yes they wear a helmet, but the helmet does not safe the jaw, elbow, knee etc. Good to see you made it all in one piece.

Ye could not agree more. I think on both sides there are stupid mistakes made, saw car drivers doing horrible maneuvers and cyclist who are (at least based on their protection) driving way to aggressive,
