Yes, he is dead No, Barrowman didn't decide to leave the show, the writers wrote his death and he was actually rather sad about it and still hopes to come back in some way in the future One of the directors said in an interview that in the arrowverse, there were many possibilities to come back and one of those could always be found, which surprised Barrowman since apparently the call he got made it seem like there was no way of Merlyn ever returning to the series. Personally, Malcolm has always been my favorite charactor (after Tommy died) and I would love nothing more than to have a reason to actually watch through season 4 and 5...

For everyone saying that he could've flew his way out of there with a Zipline or they could've put logs on the bombs, he was trying to kill the other guy that was running after them along with his lackies so he used the explosion on them as well as on himself

I've asked Barrowman (the actor who plays Merlyn) before and according to him the writers said that he is dead and not coming back. He was justifiably upset about this and I have to agree. At least give the character the dignity of dying on screen.

This was my first episode of arrow and I was like dang, this is a good father. And then I watched arrow from the beginning and caught up before season 6 since I had a year to catch up at the time lol, what is Malcolm talking about the minute Thea was born, he didn’t even know Thea was his till season 2 of arrow where she’s at the age of an adult lol.

When you realize merlyn from Kingsman dies the same way as merlyn from arrow.

smh, remember when Oliver went back to Lian Yu after Tommy had died, and Diggle and Felicity went to Lian Yu to get Oliver back, and Felicity had stepped on a land mine just like the one Thea did, and when Felicity had stepped on it, Oliver went up to a tall tree and swung to Felicity and grabbed her out of the mine. Why couldn't he do that and save Thea, so Merlin didn't have to die. SMH

Malcolm was awesome but it was time for him to go. It was ridiculous someone hadnt killed him yet. He made Thea kill Sara. He sided with Dahrk and told him about Oliver's son. He killed thousands of people. As good as some actors are, sometimes you have to let them go.

I actually think that when he went to hell (after he died obviously) he talked to the devil and told him that he doesn't know what hell means. The devil suggested a fight between him and Malcolm. The one that wins takes the position of "devil" and the other one 1000 years of fire. Malcolm won.

For those wondering if Malcolm Merlyn is actually dead.... he is dead because the actor who plays Malcolm Merlyn who is John Barrowman wanted to quite playing Malcolm Merlyn so he resigned from being part of Arrows cast and the writers had to come up with a way to kill off his character Malcolm Merlyn. I know it does actually feel weird for the main villain of the first season Arrow to have such a small unspecial death when he did deserve a much better death. Arrow probably will feel weird now without Malcolm Merlyn because he actually had screentime in every season of Arrow
