I really like all the babies but this video I found that Baty really grew on me. You could say, he pulled at my heart strings like crazy.

For persistent babies, such as Dopey, stern refusals are necessary. From what I can see in this video and your other videos, it's not "Reddy losing her temper on poor little Dopey". It's actually Reddy doing exactly what she should be doing far more often in order to get Dopey weaned if he's to survive. If you or I were ever bit by Reddy as a result of her temper, we'd be bleeding and we'd do a heck of a lot more howling than Dopey did. My point is that if Reddy bit Dopey hard because she lost her temper, he would have sustained visible injury. Instead, this only shows Reddy being stern in a way that's necessary and completely normal for Macaque mothers. The fact that it's rare for Reddy to do is unfortunate because Dopey needs to be weaned and the coddling from Reddy will only hurt him in the long run. I can't help but think it's this unwillingness to wean her young that has resulted in the loss of Dopey's siblings, rather than any hereditary disease or illness. I should add that I work at a primate conservation and rehabilitation center, in case anyone wonders what I'm basing my observations on lol. :-p

Probably good she is losing a little patients with Dopey. If you pay close attention (while filming, we don't know what they do when alone the rest of the time they are alone) Dopey hardly suckles for food anymore. He suckles the straw mostly for comfort and sleep. When he suckles to eat he practically sucks the straw down his throat with his cheeks sucked completely in around his teeth. But he rarely does that any more. Usually it's just a tiny timid comfort suck and at times no suck just the comfort of it being in his mouth till he falls into a deep deep sleep. He does this between foraging and munching solids. So he can feed himself. Not enough to survive but enough to end hunger feelings. So YES he still needs mothers milk. He's young enough yet to still need a few fill ups a day to. Be healthy. As he forages more and more for himself as he has been doing well at, recently, rather than leave the straw alone after foraging he still uses it to sleep. Reddy has to prevent that and only allow him a few suckles for actual food or true comfort from a terror scare. Not as a sleeping sleeping aid. One of the best signs a weaning is working is when the kid can fall asleep without the straw in his mouth even when still allowed the occasional belly full of milk. Reddy getting angry at him, even through her own hunger will help. He will start learning I can't sukle all I want, when I want. Like I said before, The hardest part for Reddy and Dopey will be giving up the straw for sleeping, not food like with most children. He is going to turn into a complete monster when he is really really tired and wants that straw to put him to sleep and Reddy finally says no. Specially when she's ready to conceive again. Dopey will have to learn soon or he will resent a new sibling (resentment has been observed, and even on very rare occasions an older sibling has killed an infant sibling wanting the straw back so badly, leading mother losing the new born, in her grief to give the elder kid full straw privileges back) and why you occasionally see a child much much too old to suckle being allowed to suckle as well as being carried ventral belly to belly. It is not always a too soft mother, but a grieving mother being taken advantage of by an elder child. I don't want to see Dopey do that to his mother if he survives this possible Illness. It a new sibling does not. Dopey has to find comfort and learn to cope elsewhere. And fast. Reddy is not too far off from estrus. A year. Max. Let's pray Dopey learns to cope with everyday siutions before then. Rather than running to mom's straw.

One thing I've noticed about Dopey-:::he has one toe on each foot a lot shorter than the others. Sometimes when I can't get a good look at the front, I look at his toes and Yep, that's Dopey! Lol

Yet again another interesting thought making video. Sorry Dopey you are a very cute baby Monk but I think you have some major problems somewhere and I think your first problem is your Mother, she is not helping you to grow up and I think that comes down to road begging. They stand a far better chance of getting hand outs if they have a baby with them and I think that Reddy has learned this WOW that Micky is one advanced Monk and I was surprised by the respect he got from the other juvenille and adult Monks. Poor Reddy, her nipple is permanently shaped to Dopey's mouth! As soon as he let's go the nipple don't even hang anymore it almost looks stiff

As much as Dopey breast feeds , Reddy should be eating 24 hrs a day to keep up with the supply.
