Ars Almal (aka Malmal aka Marumaru) has some trouble joining the Discord voice chat. This video is dedicated to anyone spending this Christmas alone.

Nijisanji is a group of virtual KZfaqrs who produce Japanese language live streams. Nijisanji has over 90 members, some of which publish several hours of livestream footage per day, with 7 hour live streams not being uncommon.
The length and nature of these streams makes it hard to provide subtitles for more than a small fraction of the footage.
This is a fan channel that aims to provide some subtitled clips to make it easier for English speakers to get into Nijisanji.

It makes you feel worthless. You're so close to getting out of your shell and then something inside you just slams it back down. Obviously the others don't mean to offend her by taking pity (not in the bad sense of the word) and genuinely want to help her and make her feel better, but its just knowing that others see you like that that just twists your guts and locks you up.

It's not pain dammit. It's like.. They(people like almal) just don't want to talk but they also don't like to be alone. So they prefer to be in crowd but just be quite. It's actually their happy condition. So.. Where is the pain? They just simply want to be follower of a crowd. Let be it. It's actually worst if u talk to them intensively. They just want to talk several times. I'm not one of these people. But I'm flexible. Sometimes I act like these people but sometimes, I love to talk to people. Maybe I'm ambivert. Obviously.

I agree that some people would rather just be a quiet observer in a group, but this person in particular clearly has a desire to join in. She explicitly does want to talk but can't find an opportunity to join in, hence her desire to find diamonds and therein gain an excuse to pipe up. She feels othered and is embarrassed at the pity she's shown, since although she's grateful for the others' kindness, she'd prefer to be an equal among them rather than relying on their pity.

@@DBT1007 I wont say much since i do not watch at all of her content but do watch once in a blue. When i do, i automatically love her videos. Now, it is a pain and here is why. Look at the beginning of the video and you can see she wanted to talk to the group and once she was in it. You can tell she did not have the same energy/wavelength to talk with the group and for her it does hurt. It is even worst when her listener told other v-tuber of Nijisanji about her being alone (could not find an appropriate word or sentence). I know it since i used to be an introve person back in Middle to High School time

Socially awkward girl proceeds to join a group of her own friends but they don’t realize she’s there, group of friends proceed to try to include said socially awkward girl but quickly forget about her existence, group of friends realize this and change the topic of their conversation to try the include the socially awkward girl but instantly forget about her existence and just talk between themselves again. I’m sure if we look at it from the other vtubers perspective it would look like a normal friends hangout though, socially awkward people have a talent at going unnoticed

In the defense of the other people in the group, it's not their fault that Malmal could not figure out how to join the conversation or feel comfortable being in the voice chat with them. They repeatedly tried to make her feel included and she was too scared to speak. It's definitely possible that some of them were still concerned about her even after the topic veered off of favorite food. But to once again redirect attention to Malmal at that point is only going to put more pressure on her to speak in a situation where it's noticeable that she's already having trouble doing so. If they were to act towards her in that way it likely could have made her feel even worse despite good intentions.

That's usually how it is when you put a bunch of extroverts together with 1 introvert. An introvert who would like to be a part of a conversation will think that everything she/he does will affects the mood of the conversation, therefore ruins it. She's probably also sick of being an introvert but don't know how to change. The biggest problem for them is that they like to overthink things while trying very hard to think about other people before she talks. Which ended up over-stressing her to the point where she can't even strike up a conversation since everyone else is better at it than her. Making Ars think there's really no point of her being there in the first place. Which is mainly why most introverts are loners but inherently they do want friends that's why Ars was there in the first place.

@Tab That's true. Making another introvert friends might be wiser. Most introverts will not get that overly hype or overly excited when they talk, like how the extroverts usually does. That level of excitement usually scares them off coz they felt like if they jumped into the conversation at that moment it will ruins the atmosphere. But her effort makes it seem like she wants to change so I can't really blame her.

Every introvert feels this. The pity kindness and pity attention they give you hurts more than being ignored. Because it never feels genuine. (I'm not specifically saying that was the case here, but it would be the case in real life for us. The feeling of being a burden in social gatherings.)

This video should be played at schools, everyone should see it so they can understand introvert peple. Most don't know too much about introverts, so they end up making them feels bad despite they were trying too be kind and considerate with them. In this video the others tried to include Almal but they allways end up excluding her and making her feel sad, and that's what usually happens irl. Also most people thinks being an introvert is a problem and feels bad for them, so they hurts them when they try to be nice to them because they're being condescending instead.

@@LINK1V4N This isnt really being introvert though. Introverts would be fine not being part of the conversation. Because they enjoy not being in too much of a social setting. Malmal wants to be part of the group and their conversation. An introvert would not really care for such things. Malmal is portraying social anxiety if anything. Very different from what being a introvert is. Nevertheless, I believe social anxiety is significantly more common than what people think so, any kind of "education" about it and how to perhaps connect with people who have social anxiety would be great. I meself have social anxiety, not in any shape of form as severe as Malmals but still.

@I see A lemon That wasn't my point. I meant that saying introversion and shyness are the same thing is wrong. Not every introvert is shy, and not every shy person is introverted. Also, what Anikilator has been saying is correct; introverts can be perfectly capable of social interaction, though they typically prefer being alone and keeping to themselves. Shy people, on the other hand, may have a strong desire to socialize with others, but are too nervous to do so. Thus, Malmal may not necessarily be introverted, but she is most definitely shy.

I remember seeing this video and subscribing to her out of support because I could relate to her social struggles a lot. I admittedly don't watch many of her streams nowadays (not because I don't like her current content, just have gotten busy with my life) but I checked in and am glad to she she's doing so well since this clip was released! She's grown a lot not just in terms of her sub count, but her courage and personality as well. I am genuinely happy for her and hope that only more success comes her way.

I understand that situation very much. It happened a lot to me as well. You joined in to the otaku bunch, you can't really blend in because you're "not otaku enough". Then you go to the normies, same thing happened. And to make things worse, they'd go to you because they realized you're being quiet or being distant to them and they go to you out of concern and basically trying not to make you feel left out of the loop. But that very act is the part where it stings the most. Maybe next time, don't get her involved with everyone when they're in the middle of "frenzy" work. Whoever was that messenger have a bad timing to do it. The intention is good, but the situation is like leaving a child to a group of grown-ups hanging out and they barely paid attention to the child.

Man, I hate how relatable this is. This brings back memories of the day. I was always that one guy. You know, sits alone at lunch, the last one chosen for team-oriented sports at p.e., popular target of the school bullies, no friends, etc. This even continued though my college years. It sucked. All attempts at socializing were failures. I was ignored by those who didn't care, and those who did only did so to kick me down to bolster their overinflated ego. One day I just went "screw y'all". Now I'm a boneified loner who enjoys all the solitude I can have. It's a pity that most people I've interacted with just downright suck, but I've dealt with it too much to care anymore. Those of you who have friends, cherish them. Don't take them for granted. You truly have something special with them.

Thanks man, appreciate your support! For me, social anxiety is really difficult to overcome, especially that I was fighting it alone. But realising I had friends that stuck with me for the past 6 - 10 years of school, I fought through it, because I know they won't back either if they were in my shoes. To this day, I'll improve myself to become a more social person! :)

I stumbled upon this clip on January 2020 and this clip is what makes me started to fall into the vtuber hole, not to mention it's my first time experiencing a real, non-scripted, vtuber (not counting kizuna ai, mirai akari, and others). I feel like i can relate to ars so much (being an introvert and all) so i watch more clips of her and then youtube eventually start doing their thing and recommended another vtuber. Basically because of this clip, i knew about nijisanji, i knew about hololive, i knew about voms, a lot of indie vtuber and I'm thankful for that. And it makes 2020 so much better than it should be. This hurts to watch. :( I feel so sorry for her but at least she tried. It does help to take baby steps with a good group of people. Personally I'm okay at starting and holding conversations but it helps that my IRL friends are literally all just introverts... Though when it's outside that circle of friends, my natural shyness combined with social anxiety destroys me on the inside, lmao. The social awkwardness is just a cherry on top.

I used to be a socially awkward guy that closed myself to the point that I don't have a single "friend" all the way from elementary school to middle school. When I thought this is my fate and my life was over, I met a friend, a person that I can called "a friend". He was the type of person who (I don't know the words for it) literally opposite to me, he talks alot and easy to get along with. He helped me get out of my socially awkwardness, introduce me to more people that surprisingly has the same hobby as I am. Managed to live to this days all thanks to him

Jez Mizuhashi Izayoi I can't even play dungeon/raids in MMOs solo without my gut tightening up and worrying about what the other people will think of me. Even more so if I end up being the one to make the group wipe. Joining a guild or whatever for harder content is impossible

I noticed that most of the v-tubers have a near identical setup, my guess is that it helps with the tech support. The memory displayed is a limit used within the minecraft java version. Vanilla Minecraft in general allocates about 2GB of memory, and that is shown here.

Oh wow, I was watching the Japanese highlights of this just the other day. For those not in the know, this is referred to in Japanese as コミュ障 (pronounced 'commu-shou'): it can be directly translated as 'communication problems' and is used to describe anyone who has problems socialising for whatever reason. I also saw the term 陰キャ ('inkya') being used in the comments, but I don't like that term: it means a negative or dark personality, which isn't necessarily true for those with social anxiety - add to that the phrase has bad connotations in Jappers, so one should use it carefully. As for Ars Almal, I wouldn't say she has a negative personality - although she does tend to prefer her own company and do things at her own pace, she can get along quite well with people on a one-to-one basis once she gets used to them. If this video has left you feeling down, I would suggest you go look for some videos of Ars Almal's collab streams with Ex Albio with whom she became good friends: just copy and paste the following line of Japanese characters into the search bar (or use the hashtag #エビマル) and you'll find some good ones to watch. I relate to her so badly, the hesitation and wanting to talk but not knowing when to and what to say exactly. Although recently I've been feeling a little better, the trick was to do my best and stop thinking while talking. I still feel way to nervous to talk to others but I do surprise myself sometimes when on rare ocasions I come off as an extrovert.
