This vehicle (without the RR gun) was featured in a couple of seasons of "The Man in the High Castle", depicting a vehicle replacing the Kubelwagen in the alternate timeline 1960s.

:D for sure, and this is far from the worst. Like most militaries ours love their abbrevations. Pvpjtgb reads out "Pansarvärnspjästerrängbil", roughly in english "Anti-tank gun terrain vehicle".

Worth noting that the name is exactly what the vehicle is: pansarvärnspjästerrängbil = pansarvärnspjäs (anti-tank artillery) terrängbil (all terrain vehicle). So in swedish the name is actually easy to remember because its just literally what the system is 😅

Thank you Stefan et al. These types of gun carriers tend to be ignored, although they filled important roles and had higher availability than tracked vehicles. Also much quicker and easier to set up camouflage nets with their underlying scrim. Cheers from NZ🇳🇿.

At perhaps 100 meters it feels like my guts were ripped. Further, I think the crew were supplied with a face mask to protect from the cold (especially useful when driving) and extra thick gloves.

Kind of feel it's a bit of a design flaw that to use the recoilless rifle you've got to fold the roll cage out of the way .... In a war that's going to be annoying , but with a conscript army I can see the necessity , boys will be boys after all
@SonsOfLorgar
@SonsOfLorgar 3 ай бұрын
The roll cage wasn't part of the original design, it was added a few months after the vehicle entered service after half a dozen off and onroad rollovers killed or crippled, on average 3/5 of the crew each time... Crews consisting of 18yo to 20yo conscripts fresh out of highschool with parents and sibblings that expected them to be back home 10-18 months later... And the Roll cage wasn't all useless, it was great for tying on foliage, saplings, tarp and cammo netting in a way that meant it only took half a minute to mask and unmask what other vehicle crews had to spend up to twenty minutes total to do every time the unit halted for food or rest...

This kind of AT-weapon is not for rapid attac tactics. You roll in a position where you can wait to enemy to come in your sight and firing range. You try to never expose the vehicle to enemies, only the gun and gunner should be above a cover. You shot one or two rapid shots and then leave.

Two men on skis in tandem and two more, one on each side of the two tandemskiers. in downhill the two on the sides act for breaking speed. Have tried that, the pulk is made of glasfiber and has a bracket for the gunmount so you fire from the pulk. :-)

The idea of free-floating on a gimball instead of having to crank handwheels to follow a target seems quite interesting to "hip-shoot" an then run. Is the gun balanced loaded? Seems a bit nose heavy when empty, I guess with the round in the chamber is perfectly balanced.
@drontobil
@drontobil 3 ай бұрын
A target moving at constant speed and no bobbing around up and down is surprisingly easy to follow. The high velocity of the HEAT grenade help if the advance of the reticle ("hair cross") is not perfect. Mind you an enemy tank is and was several meters long. With the gun on the carriage one could move to positions not expected by an enemy and keep a literately low profile. The gun is in use in Ukraine now. de SA3BOW

@@drontobil thanks for the info. I'm still convinced that aiming moving the gun with your body (like the shoulder rest on Matilda II) is easier than coordinate two hands on two axes on separate hndwheels.
@drontobil
@drontobil 3 ай бұрын
@@fabiogalletti8616 Yes it is so with this gun. The gunners position don't allow much side travel. But training to shoot fast and get away is the key here. Agan the high speed grenade is a benefit. Compare that with a wire guided robot. Flight time is longer so the field of observation/lead with no obstacles must be wider. With this gun only a narrow slot in the woods is enough to get a "lead" and shoot. And the "hip shoot'n" as you call it has a few more advantages than a hand cranked gun have: Simpler, lighter, cheaper design that equals more guns produced. Can be moved with a smaller crew. In the end it mean more grenades can be delivered to target. And talking from experience from art pieces: No cogs where debris get the gun stuck. It is easy to spray ones empties from the gun crews then normal weapon 9 mm SMG. Those empties find peculiar ways to wrong places. Development shown in Ukraine have now made this gun less useful compared to FPV. Still it show that Sweden was right making this gun to fight contemporary vehicles and that it worked even at the start of russian full scale aggression in Ukraine. Side notes: the optic sight was made also to allow semi indirect fire. But no grenade was developed for that. The top mounted gun is an example of a historical habit in the Swedish army: Combine and reuse stuff for something it was not intended. The innovative and brave Ukrainians master this now. de SA3BOW

The smaller calibre round is ballisticly matched with the recoilless rifle, and is a tracer. The gunner fires burst or single shot until the small round strikes the target, then fires the main weapon. Our anti tank platoon guys (US 105mm mounted on a SWB Landrover Series 2) used to boast the tank crew would hear the ‘ping’ of the small round, milliseconds later, turret ripped open. The 105 used a ballisticly matched fifty caliber ‘spotter’ rifle.
@lavrentivs9891
@lavrentivs9891 3 ай бұрын
It's usually with a matched ballistics out to a certain range (normally the effective range of the main weapon). It was a common and quick way to rangefind before laser rangefinders were a thing and were even used on tanks like the Centurion, Chieftain and Vickers export models.

Yes, there are some videos of it in Ukraine. I don't think there are many of them, and I don't think they are used in the most active sectors. I don't think there is a lot of ammunition for these but if they are only used once, then it's better than nothing. The origin of it is a little unclear from what I've seen. It was probably transferred to Estonia in the 90's as military aid, and then given to Ukraine by Estonia. But it may have come from Sweden though, as part of the first shipments of surplus. Sweden went public with some of the flashy stuff for PR reasons, but typically don't publish the content of the military aid.

Australia purchased the Charlie Gutsache….Carl Gustuv, but because of involvement in Vietnam, a conflict which Sweden disliked, they would not supply ammo. I believe this lingering bitterness went against the selection, or even consideration of CV90 for Land 400, lest Swedish decide Australia is fighting the wrong enemy again.

Generally Sweden has been against supplying weapons to unnecessary and offensive wars. Basically, if you intend to use our weapons for other reasons than self defense, we're not keen on selling them to you. It caused some controversy when the USA chose to invade and occupy Iraq in 2003, it was one thing to sell weapons to the USA when they invaded Afghanistan as it could be construed as a sort of self defense, but there were no real excuses for Iraq, so there was a public outcry to rip up trade agreements concerning the sale of the AT-4 and other swedish weapons in US service. (Don't think those agreements actually were broken, as we're in a place in time where economic agreements are more important than human rights.)
