Introduction by Adriana Serra 00:34
Children of the night 03:08
Skylark 15:17
In the wee small hours of the morning 23:40
That old feeling 29:14
I didn't what time it was 36:31
Mosaic 43:54
The band:
Art Blakey (drums), Freddie Hubbard (trumpet), Wayne Shorter ( tenor sax), Cedar Walton (piano), Curtis Fuller (trombone), Reggie Workman (bass).
I did my best to keep the quality as good as possible, but the B/W source was an average VHS.
an excellent concert which gives us the opportunity to appreciate (among others) together the young Wayne Shorter and Freddie Hubbard

My Dad played with Freddie Hubbard in San Francisco one night on Broadway. The next night, Freddie came over our house for dinner. I was only about 12 at the time. My Dad, who also played trumpet, and taught myself, asked I come out in the living-room, and play a song for Freddie. So..I did. Freddie shook my hand, and said, "hey, this kid has some chops". I will never forget it. Needless to say, I later quit playing the trumpet. When I was about 20 years old. Although, I never stopped loving jazz.

For me they were the best - Hard Bop - outfit, ever! My favourite slide-bone Curtis Fuller in top form, as are the others. And then we have Art Blakey pushing his men into a frenzy of just great Jazz. Saw TJM twice in small, live broadcasted, gigs. And the first time in a concert in 1959 with Lee Morgan. This unforgettable music changed my perception of Jazz forever. Magic stuff folks. So get into the swing of things and Dig. G’day & Cheers!

LOL. Did you see Satch's Hot Five in 1923 too? Of course, you are decidedly incorrect about which hard bop unit was the best. Clearly, that was the 1960-61 band with Shorter, Morgan, Timmons and Merritt. However, the band with Golson and Morgan in the front line is a close second.

@@steverickenbacher7110 Here we go again Stevie. It all comes down to what one prefers. I saw in the late 50’s Art, Morgan, Golson, Timmons and the following year with Morgan, Shorter, Walter Davis jr. Btw which time(s) did you see “The Messengers”. Just one tip Steve be nice and - don’t get out if hand - because you’ll be barred again. Comments are what people like/perceive etc, and not dissecting/denigrating one’s tastes. In the meantime be well, G’day & Cheers!

@@ronaldunkel2681 Just one tip for you. I am of a much younger pedigree than you, but am fairly confident that I can put my knowledge of jazz up against anyone's. I am well-educated and in need of no tips, especially from you. Fwiw, I was not banned before. Here we don't go again, Uncle Ronnie. I am just amused by your constant over the top hyperbole appearing in every jazz channel you choose to insert it, and feel that it is my duty to call it out because it dilutes the music which I love. I will say that you are just like many music fans that I observe around the 'net. When everything is awesome, nothing is awesome. Remember that. Obviously this band and this music are great, but calling it the best thing in hard bop since sliced bread is utterly ridiculous. Not only does it imply that you've heard every single hard bop note ever played, but it sets you up as some sort of resident expert to the unknowing public. Despite your old age, you are not. If you were from the place where this music originated, that might be different.

@@steverickenbacher7110 You start of by saying that i was at one of Armstrong’s concerts in 1923 shows a deluded flauw in character. You try to denigrate. You keep saying - that you are living in the universe of the world- as you recall. That’s utter nonsense, you are living in a society that’s in decline. Also repeating that you are very well educated etc, etc,. Shows that you somehow seems to have a - High and Mighty - attitude, Steve. You ramble on in your reply about me but you haven’t got a clue who or what i am. I only comment on jazz i like, it’s as simple as that! Oh, btw my first live-concert was the Oscar Peterson trio in 1957. The last Jazz Messengers live-gig was in 81 with a young 18/19 year old Wynton Marsalis and Bobby Watson. With my late friend Wallace Bishop (ex drummer Earl Hines band) i met and talked with dozens of great Jazz Artists. Some like Teddy Edwards, Sonny Stitt came to my house. So just pull your head in or better out and accept peoples ideas, impressions, observations etc,. You’re to uptight and have a displaced feeling of grandeur. And Steve try not to be so nasty! Cheers!

@steverickenbacher7110 2 жыл бұрын
@@ronaldunkel2681 Perhaps you're not so well acquainted with cynicism in humor. Rather than see it as a flaw, I choose to see it as an asset. Please stop bragging about your accomplishments. It makes you appear desperate for attention. Whether or not America is in decline is up for debate. However, what is not up for debate is that (1) nobody living outside of America can know more about its status than anyone who live here AND (2) jazz originated here. Those 2 items, btw, are mutually exclusive and have absolutely nothing to do with one another. But, nice try at gaslighting and deflecting. So, for those who choose to study and follow it, we know more than anyone from overseas can possibly know about it. For what its worth, my knowledge of the music started with my parents, who are likely older than you, and who grew up following jazz on 52nd Street and Greenwich Village back in its heyday. I choose to point out that I am well-educated because it is a fact that seems to escape you over and over again. As I said earlier, I'll put my knowledge of and taste in music up there with the best of them, regardless of my vintage. As far as nasty goes, obviously you've missed my point. I am so sick of hyperbolic commenting that claims that this or that is the best anything. It is utter nonsense that you solely comment on music that you like. You show up with commentary that even Rolling Stone would cackle at on every single jazz channel that I follow. How about focusing on educating the many who know nothing about jazz by commenting on the background behind any album you wish to address? Dopey comments about Paul Desmond being the real driving force behind the famous Brubeck Quartet because Brubeck himself was a non-swinging pianist are not only denigrating to an artist who deserves a lot of credit for his achievements, but also misleading to those who don't know any better. And trust me, most who subscribe to these channels do not know better.

One of the great lineups Art put together for his musical message. What can you say about Art and his great School of Jazz Musicianship? So many true titans came through it to eventually become leaders in their own right, Clifford Brown and Lou Donaldson, Kenny Dorham and Hank Mobley, Donald Byrd, Lee Morgan, Benny Golson, Horace Silver, Bobby Timmons, Keith Jarrett, James Williams, Benny Green, Mulgrew Miller, the List is endless.... God bless the great Art Blakey, for a life well lived, and all the GREAT MUSIC he left behind. Man, Freddie and Wayne were absolutely at the top of their game, and killing it on every solo.

Great musicians of all times in their Jazz idiom that African American invented developed and disseminated to be accepted globally. lt came at the time of segregation and was reluctantly admired by a few white musicians and music lovers but Black musicians further worked on it it got so attractive even those who were reluctant to admit its artistic superiority to all forms of musics then even today.Today these artists are studied in many high schools in America and in many Universities globally.
