Literally EVERYONE makes people pursuing art feel stupid and like they are worthless and wont do anything in life. But we strive still and when we make it everyone looks up to us and acts like they've always supported us smh

I personally believe graphic/ web design is one of the best on this list. You can branch to A LOT of different fields. Like marketing, business and UX,UI Design.

I would say, if you want a graphic design degree, go for an associate degree, you can learn web design, photography, and can learn to do design stuff, you could work as a freelance photographer and web designer, pros of this, you can get an associate degree from a comunity college and save a lot of money.

Starting my senior year for my BFA in Graphic Design after switching majors from Business Marketing and Accounting. I am debt-free due to scholarships, parental help, and working both part-time and full-time (senior year - no scholarships anymore due to me being a half-time student with only 4 classes left for my degree but I saved up my tuition from working and saving). Yes, I understand the stigma against any art-related degree - it's the reason why I originally went to college for something completely different trying to focus on a career for "money" rather than what I actually have some interest in. Yes, you can learn everything online. There's no need for a degree. But here are my experiences being a student getting a degree right now at a University: - Networking Opportunities are top-tier and super beneficial - Internship opportunities (both paid and unpaid) that my University has provided and relayed to us (students) ranging from 2D, 3D, Game Design, etc have been monumental - Great recommendation letters and resources for my resume & CV - My professors have been strict, informative, transparent, and driven in a way to push us (students) to combat the "art & design" stigma - our class is small, it's a program-based degree (you have to submit an application and portfolio and get judged - only 18-23 people are selected every year) My experiences being a student getting a degree right now at a University and working jobs that are already design-related with above min-wage pay for the moment: - Competition is fierce. There are several people out there that can do art, design, and everything in between. There's outsourcing platforms where people will contract for far less and quicker. You're up against people who are already networking and outsourcing in a way that's unimaginable. I am extremely lucky in getting jobs. I've only been rejected from 1 so far - have applied and been accepted into 6 jobs in total and I'm currently working 3 jobs (44) hours at this moment in time. My junior year of college with 5 studio classes I was working 60 hour work weeks. I know the only reason I've been able to work in successful jobs and maintain a good pay is because of my drive for success, my minimal exposure to marketing and the accounting side of things (I am continuing to self-learn marketing and business tips myself on the side rather than minor), and my mom (immigrated to the US with her only education being high school). She has been my driving force and I do not want to disappoint her with an "art" degree and let it go to waste. She is my role model and inspiration. Art has been something I was going to keep as an hobby but I've always seen myself going back to it regardless of what other interest I've had (Psychology and Science - specifically Genetics). - Networking is important. Look, I'm not the most people-person out there, I'm more on the serious and reserved side when it comes down to it and I prefer to work alone or in a really small group - however I wouldn't have gotten one of the jobs I have now if it wasn't for the association with my university and 1 professor. They referenced me to someone and I went through a whole interview process against a few other peers and applicants and I was just luckily chosen out of the many talented people who applied. I am quite content right now working the jobs I have and continuing to explore jobs in fields that are unrelated to Graphic Design even if it's slightly lesser pay because I genuinely just want to explore what other things exist out there and gain experience. I'm not married, I don't have kids. I've worked my butt off to stay debt-free and I have a very hard-working and inspirational mother who has driven me to be better. Design is not even my strongest side, it's illustration. I was on the verge of not even being accepted into the program my University offers because my skillset was below what was expected but yet I had those few pieces of work that made me "unique" or made the judges question the true potential I had once I had more exposure and guidance. I just knew that I kept going back to doing something art related and I guess it just called-out to me that I should just pursue it. I just wanted to put my experience out there. There's hope and a bright light but I don't think it's achievable if it's not for hard-motivated work. I know there's a potential for burnout and tiredness, so I'm currently exploring other hobbies and interests now (another is reading) and seeing what I can do with that (blogging, etc) in the case where I can't handle all the client work and move into something with lesser hours and lesser pay. I know not everyone is like this but I just want everyone to know that there are so many ways in going around getting an art degree, especially post-pandemic, that there's still so much to learn. Art is everywhere. On websites, games, road signs, healthcare banners, advertising, social media, packaging.. I also feel like there's so many niches and careers out there that not many people know exist therefore not many get to learn about that are art-related and get missed out on. Medical illustration, there's art jobs in scientific fields to help create sustainable packaging, etc.. so many. Explore, explore, explore. Do not give up and YES. FEEL INTIMIDATED BY THE STIGMA and use it as a DRIVING force to not give up, to prove people wrong, and to inform. I usually don't comment on videos so I'm sorry if this is long. :)

if you want to study animation look into taking classes from online schools like animation mentor and building a portfolio for your job if you cant go to a brick and mortar college. also if you focus on technical animation (rigging, modeling, etc. you can make upwards of $100,000) in the animation or game industry. its a tough industry but you CAN make money in animation!

Appreciate you doing this because I'm not really a technical person who's good at engineering, medical, computer or any of that. My interests are in things like English, writing, speaking, communication, talking, marketing, business, design and arts. So people who are a more like me will appreciate this sort of content and more information/depth on this. Thanks!

My best advice for ppl who want to work as artists (especially in 3D) - find a professional who's already worked the exact job you want to work and is willing to teach you for some money, and squeeze them dry out of everything they know. And ask for a lot of feedback. That's what got me my job that I'm really enjoying:)

As someone who is currently in my third year of an interior design degree, (with two more years to go) I have a few points on the subject that I think might be useful to anyone who is considering it as a career path. First of all, to find success in this industry I firmly believe you need to be a people person. Through my college education I have worked for two interiors companies in sales (I currently work for one multinational company), which have both paid really well but have required a lot of energy and good people skills. Interior design is about selling your personality, not just your designs - remember that! In fact a lot of companies who hire graduate interior designers require two things - experience in interior sales, and the degree. Secondly, to do well in this industry you need to specialise in a specific area - there’s furniture design, (sub genres of that), kitchen design, bathroom, hospitality, corporate, the list goes on and on. You also need to have a reasonably good understanding of maths as there are buildings regulations to adhere to, and have good spacial awareness as you will be using technical 3D modelling software and engineering software like AutoCAD. This kind of degree is not just about picking cute cushions and curtains! Hope this helps someone!

As someone who has worked in the industry and taught graphic design at the college level for many years, I can say without question it is about much more than having a “skill” in a particular Adobe program. Learning graphic design takes much more than learning photoshop. You need specialized study in design concepts which you will not get from any book, and will not get it “working with a graphic designer.” Graphic design companies do not take on interns unless there are in their 3rd or 4th year of a degree program. The main reason for this is that most people have the uninformed view that it is just a “fun skill.” Employers don’t have the time to deal with that type of mentality. It’s hard work that requires serious focus and dedication, as with any career path. If you want to get into the Graphic Design field, you should major at a reputable state university. The expensive private art schools are not any better than a 4-year BFA program at a state university. The private art schools are just much more expensive. If you rely on an online course, you will get what you pay for, an illusion that you are more “skilled” than you are. Also, as a side note, based on my experience working with photographers, the same applies to that field as well.

Great video! I majored in Music Education. You might be surprised to learn that after stipends, starting salary in Houston for me was $60,000. Of course, there wasn't much growth after that (went to business school after that for accounting & finance and it's so much fun!), so I went into private equity. To be a music educator, you do need a degree in music ed. But at least it's decent money and still within art

I agree with all the above. You did a great job. But you should really talk about UI&UX positions that you can get with graphic design. I think those can make the skills more worth it. I think you don't need a degree for graphic design personally, but a lot of the jobs I apply to ask for one. Freelance is a different story, but I think overtime art degrees won't be too much of a thing anyway. Thank you for such a great video!

As a fresher in an Art degree, people have a VERY BAD view of how art degrees work. Theyre not only drawing, or doing graphic design. If you pay attention we have LOADS and LOADS of projects, webinars, and different kinds of exhibits that let us meet artists and important people TO MAKE CONNECTIONS. Just cuz you have an art degree doesnt mean you can get far without connections. Networking is key to succeed in the art world. So the way this video is put together is bad cuz art degree is very important. You see it everywhere around you, literally. The toilet you sit on is art. So my suggestion if you are in the art field like me is to keep making strong network. The bigger and stronger network you have, the more it will benefit you in the long run. It is always people who are not artists and haven’t pursued an art degree that believe everything can be learned on the internet or by “doing”. First of all, it’s not an entirely helpful sentiment because it doesn’t direct those who want to learn art skills anywhere in particular, and also, as someone who went to art school, I can ALWAYS tell if someone went or not. The level of drastic improvement and professionalism someone gets from going to a reputable art program is leagues and bounds ahead of any KZfaq videos or “learning by doing”.

I think the most important thing you learn in art school is networking and learning how to take feedback. It's not about the skills you learn, more about the opportunities you get while you're studying. You get to put your work out there, so people can see it.

If you really want to be sucessful with an art degree, you might need to spend alot of time to network to get the best choices. These are the kinds of degrees where the market is kinda leaning towards to popularity and prestige.

As a Visual Artist ivd say that If you do something specific than you can improve, no matter if your studying Fine Arts.. it depends from the person. In any Art Degree you need passion to be producative and creative. For a Job in Arts it was always a challenging sector.

When you pay for an art degree, you are paying for personalized training and professional connections. You are given resources for personal professional development (especially useful if you haven't had prior experience with the professional realm of that career). As a composer (which you lumped all music related degrees into one, which is a disservice for that entire spectrum of careers I might add), you get one on one direction from professionals and the know-how about how to navigate rehearsals, set up commissions, etc.

Thank you for this great video, I suppose this is the same about all degrees. For example, I know a guy that has a master's degree in chemistry but he earns less than a photographer with a BA. Your point is no matter what degree you have, your skills and your willing to grow and be top in your career is the most important thing.

Hmm so I just want to let everyone know that a fine art degree isn’t useless, if u use it properly, u need one to get into the art world of selling in galleries etc, and if u want to become an art curator or gallery manager, art therapist or art teacher. Hey Shane! I wanted to say that I really enjoy your videos, they are so well-informed. And I wish I had videos like these when I was finishing high-school. I'm in my mid-20s, and I'm glad to say I got great scholarships and went to school for free. YAY, debt free! However, right now I'm going back to school to finish my bachelors and become a medical lab technologist. I wanted to make a comment about being an interior designer. The first time, I went to college I studied Architecture and ended up getting a job for custom kitchen interior deigners, in production. And from the years (5+) that I've been working there. I've seen that being an interior designer equals struggling for a job, being over worked, and under paid. In my office, we work with tons of interior deigners and I have seen all of them be JOBLESS. My boss keeps his assistants for a year or a few months and fires them, or they quit. I have seen many interior designers struggling for work, and when they find one, it's usually low paid (considering all the schooling or great experience they could have). They can expect the main designer, their bosses, managers, etc., to just pile them with tons of work; that their bosses don't want to do. (Since, I live in Florida; the bosses are usually playing golf or at the beach with their dogs). While you do mostly all the work, yet it's the bosses, lead designers, that take home mostly all the profit from the job. I warn many people to stay away from this slightly pyramid scheme career. I have seen so many talented interior deigners brake down from the pressure. Being this kind of designers is not easy and takes skills. Also, that I like to mention, area is KEY! if you live in a city, you can expect some success, but living in a suburban or country-like setting makes it too difficult to find a job in this field.

I heard some of these videos on KZfaq and read some forums/articles, but I have to say that the message is lost on those that you intend it to go to. In my experience, there are 3 types of people who get art or humanities degrees: those who have no idea what they want to do with their life, but think they need a degree; those who are very passionate about the field and may or may not be talented/have the necessary connections; and those who are just looking to do better than their parents in life, were academically minded, got good grades at school etc. and thought going to college would help them do better in life. In all these cases the people involved actually didn't have much of an alternative. I can guaranty that the choice wasn't between arts/humanities and STEM and I've never understood why so many STEM graduates have this attitude because choosing arts does not really mean rejecting STEM. In 90% of cases these graduates aren't suitable for STEM anyway.

For graphic design you really can get by pretty well by learning online Plus the outsourcing part is slowly becoming a big problem

I think The key with industrial design if you can’t think of it as your passion you have to think of it as a job if you come in thinking you’re going to be a car designer or shoe designer the odds are very unlikely but if you’re open to design anything such as tiny as wheels for example it’s more realistic! The most annoying thing about having a KZfaq channel is the fact that it limits expanding your creativity.When a viewer watches a video he likes, he's gonna expect that same video over and over and if it is not the same video they signed up for, they won't watch it. So it's about balancing what you wanna upload and what your viewers want you to upload.

Maybe its discouraging to hear some of this but I definitely think you should hear him out in the later half of the video. For instance it is a great idea to get a fallback job that can finance your life and your passion for art while you work your way in. Online courses are great too if you have the self discipline.

Can someone explain how you need connections to get a job? If you have good skill, wouldn't you be a competitive candidate for a job? I just graduated with a laboratory medicine degree and finding a job is so hard because literally anyone can do a laboratory technician job, you just follow the procedures. As a graphic designer, not everyone can do your job 🤔, you're a valuable asset to the company because you bring unique creativity ideas... So why would someone be hired just because they knew someone from the company?

This is so backhanded. Because yes, skill and talent is most important. But you can say that someone with a business major or any other degree can just teach themselves, or “someone from an outside country can do it for cheaper”. But people only say this about art degrees because they don’t see the value or purpose it serves. The paper proves that you know your stuff, that you can commit to something and you take your art more seriously than just a hobby. I believe the school experience will provide more than I can seek out myself. I’m introverted, I live in a small town, I don’t know how to make connections.

A lot of good tips, but even though a degree is not always necessary, a lot of times it helps, or at least helps develop those skill sets you need to set yourself apart. It takes a lot of self-discipline, time, and dedication, and often a little money to DIY completely.

I think people should be informed on what their job prospects look like and im glad you provide that information. For example as a bachelor of fine arts student i know that in my country of Australia as of 2020 there is a 3.8% chance of full time employment in the fine arts field. If people are doing this degree to get rich it is the wrong degree for them lol

Art associate's degrees are valuable, they give people who have no idea where to start the beginning skills to get started. Not to mention the instructors are a good source for advice and guidance of where to go. I do agree bachelor's art degrees are worthless. Just get an associate's and it will really help you. Using financial aid can even give you a free ride.

Making good art is one of the hardest things you can do, and convincing others why they should buy it is even harder. Stack that on top of the fact that in order have a good career in Art you need to be skilled and make connections, and in order to make connections you need to have good social skills, and in order to have good social skills you need to be comfortable and spend a lot of time around people, all of which takes a significant amount of time and money. So what's the strategy if you've hit the lottery of coming from a poor anti-social family?

I managed a gallery for a decade and sold about $100,000 worth of art myself personally per year and I hired many people with art degrees and train them and it seemed to actually get in the way of their ability to do the job it seemed that the people that had no degrees were more trainable and could do a better job than the ones that had degrees

great video and you reveal the harsh reality of art degrees and the only good job in visual arts is teaching. and I was very upset with my self after spending all that money to do art a level for two years part time and what the teach taught me I could have learned on trial and error. And I was already self taught and certification is just useless to me and I i did this age 24 and I was painting over 8years. while it look good on biography for your exhibitions that is far as it goes and the faster people realize that art is a practice before it becomes a profession the better for all young artist.

I think except Industrial design and Interior design.. Degrees are still required for these field. You still can't be an interior designer by just learning from skillshare. And there are actually other countries where interior designers have good job outlook.

You don't go to get a university degree to get money bro. You go there to get knowledge. Understanding painting and color harmony are not going to give you money but rather learn how to solve visual problems, learn how to be creative, and solve other problems, bro. University professors are not very rich but still, they are very smart and they help us by accomplishing most research and they only complicate everything so that we start becoming problem solvers. My Chemistry teacher is very poor but still is very intelligent and has taught many doctors who have made it in life. Now you still thinking about University Degree as salaries? If so which University degree did do and how much money does it give you?? If it giving little money just know some OBS and OGS of yours are getting a lot. Why? Creativity is the answer.

If you want to make money as an artist the only degree that really pays off in my experiance is a Business degree with minor in art. Also Graphic design is a good one!

Here's one that may be worth it: an MFA in English with a creative nonfiction emphasis earned part-time after the candidate has earned a BS in computer science, has been promoted to software engineering management, and has learned about the artificial intelligence software putting lots of people out of work. The new MFA graduate can then write books explaining how the new technical economic situation came about, and explain the best job qualifications for getting care-giver positions for new humanoid robots.

I know this is an old video but I hope you can still answer my question. I live in Netherlands were graphics design schools can be decent. I want a job in art industry and had an idea instead of going to art school I will go to marketing or business school and work on portfolio on the side?

Is it possible for you to make a video on what kind of job that doesn’t require long work hours but still makes decent amount of money

I'm mid-way through college and I'm getting a bachelor's for TV and Film and hopefully a career in editing. Although the degree probably doesn't have a lot of value, I still feel like networking with everyone in my field and hopefully get into the industry that way. I'm not sure how helpful that would be in terms of the field I'm getting into

Im a university student im planning on pursuing radiation therapy but getting an art minor with a focus on digital media and animation cause ive found with the resources avalable online animation is one of the most annoying things to self teach and probably some ceramic design courses cause im currently working on starting an art based small buisness on the side 😊
