"The furry aesthetic, as a whole, is a consession towards the symbolic, the sensory, the ever so slightly autistic." This really brings together the whole reason why I've stayed in this fandom for so long. The self-aware but completely invested love of something so dumb and so meaningful all at once.

The furry fandom is a beautiful thing while I have my criticisms of it of how we can exclude problematic people better its still amazing it's the absolute perfect mix of what make it what it is you express yourself through art and a character it's also sexually open as a community you can hide your identity through a character safely especially if your LGBTQ+ there's the occasional get togethers with freinds why? Idk because we like furries or just want to make friends but don't know how too it's a group of people that are open to talk about what every person needs acceptance and since we're already a wierd group of animal people we know we're pretty wierd it's a perfect catalyst that makes what furry is it's artists expression through fantasy for sexuality or disability in order to accept that disability maybe you even want to improve on certain traits or get over passed traumas by making a character with traits or personality you wish you had ultimately gradually easing your way into it it's a community that you or anyone can be a part of and once your a part of it your part of an open loving community that understands basic human needs and wants such as acceptance or simple person to person contact like a hug at a con or at a meet and just getting together with other people and having fun those are basic human needs idk it's hard to explain what furry is exactly it's a lot but it's great and the perfect mix of things that strangely came together in a perfect beautiful way

this hits hard... like, its a 24 minutes straight explanation on why "im cringe but im free" is the best mindset with which art may be done. i have always been afraid for my artwork to come as stupid or non sensical and be shamed for it. but this video inspired me to think about this and now i want to become truly cringe but free. thank you, beautiful dog musician

Idk, I never found it freeing at all. It's an escape tactic too avoid problems... I am more free when I'm just completely honest with myself, then honest with the world. My peices are expressions of me, I enjoy sharing them, it hurts when people are mean but it's worth it just to get my art too the 1 person that truely does understand. Art is an experience, and if your not in the right place to recive that experience, it will seem silly. I'm ok with that. anyway, good luck with your art dawg.

Nobody can ever feel what you’re feeling. The closest we can get at the moment is through art. If what you make is good, they’ll still judge you. Nothing will ever make that stop. What changes is how you feel about it. If someone with no dreams, aspirations or even understanding of their language says something to you there’s no reason at all to take it seriously. Do what you want when you want, don’t hurt anyone unless they ask, be kind to all

Growing up online deeply hurt me. I feel that I fall on the opposite side to what is conveyed in this video, and what a lot of people are discussing in the comments; I grew up on the side of the internet that laughed at 'cringe' content, the side with trolling and rage bait and furry hate and OMG FEMIZAZI GETS DESTROYED WITH FACTS AND LOGIC!!! Thankfully, I barely needed to hit puberty to recognise all that for what it was, but it still affects me even now. I remember one day when I was 12 years old - my first day at a new school. I was a smart kid who always asked lots of questions, went above and beyond the syllabus, and was always a pleasure to have in class, but the one thing I couldn't do was be myself. I got given a little sheet to fill in about myself, and it was the first thing I couldn't do in school. Putting pen to paper and writing out my interests, favourite TV shows, and favourite food felt instinctively wrong because I was broadcasting a tiny sliver of my personality, which put me at risk of being 'cringe'. Even my handwriting. Even my *name*, although there's now a trans-related explanation for that too. I was scared to be a person. All I wanted to be was good grades - if I could strip the person away from that then I would be perfect. I still struggle with what I call "auto-embarrassment", in that I don't let myself do things in case *I* think it's an embarrassing, cringe thing to do. Even thinking about certain things used to make me worry that I might express those thoughts and feelings, that my expression might be witnessed, that the witnesses would laugh. I'm getting over it. All the facets of my anxiety have added up, over time, to constitute a gaping void between my mind and my means, as in what I say and what I do. Self-expression, creativity and self-love are excruciatingly difficult for me, in ways that made it take longer for me to recognise my sexuality and my gender and in ways that have taken away any chance of being my authentic self at any time in my childhood. There's so much I didn't do. That's why I can't quite process just how much I love the idea of being unashamedly dumb and silly as an expression of humility and self-acceptance. Five, even three, years ago, that would've been such a nightmarish, horrible, no-good concept to me, that I would've cleared my browser history to hide the fact I'd even watched this video from nobody in particular. I'm getting better! Me, the person who would've hesitated to even put a fucking exclamation mark in this comment, to make sure I didn't sound too excited! I'm deprogramming myself and it is the best, most liberating thing I've ever done. I have a pride flag being delivered. I have new friends; even if I'm not always open with them, I do that by choice and not because I feel it's a necessity. I stopped forcing myself to like normal things, even in private (internalisation is the most powerful form of influence, after all) and I genuinely feel like I'm just getting to know myself after quite a lot of years of being the person that I am, just squished down and put on mute. You in particular, Patricia Taxxon, played a big part in all of this. Hearing your music, the experimental, innovative sound of Spiral Staircase and several dozen other tracks helps me feel like myself. The emotion in your voice is so real and so beautiful, and I hope that I can sing in my own, tangential way someday. There's a tiny little voice in my head that tells me not to listen to you, that you and listening to you are wrong, and with each loop it gets smaller and recedes further into the horizon. Also, you put me onto Echo and my brain has been totally consumed - that's definitely a less serious note but a genuinely important one nonetheless. I'm re-learning how to express myself and be imperfect, and that may or may not be starting with an Echo fanfic, and building to an entirely original VN that I'm 20k words deep into planning. I'm a writer who's still deciding on a name. I'm genderfluid and I'm demisexual and I'm happy to be here. I also want to get around to designing an owl fursona. It still stings a little bit, writing in the first person and acknowledging myself as any kind of person, but I'm getting there. Hi.

It can be incredibly effective (as shown in this video essay), but it's also more difficult to pull off. Having your thesis at the forefront serves as a guide to the reader and a reference for the writer to stay on track. It makes sense for an English teacher to teach the easier format to do right first, and the students who have the desire to tackle more intricate formats will eventually find the opportunity to do so.

I think it really works here because of the way the video continues to pull you in with seemingly disparate music, memes, videos, fandoms, etc. It's great to be stimulated with something new every few minutes, but also leaves you guessing as to what the point of it all is. Your brain running a mile a minute trying to process the connections between all these things and just cracking up at the whiplash of each transition. It's so satisfying when all the pieces fall into place all at once once the thesis is revealed and it all starts to make sense. Honestly an incredibly structured essay and something I hope people learn from!

That final line broke me. After the video ended I just sat and stared for a solid 10 seconds, contemplating that little question, “What are you?”. Ive called myself a furry since early middleschool, pretty much once I found out about the fandom I was hooked. I proudly made my first fursona, a lynx named Pixel with bright purple hair who was definitely a mary sue. She may have been cringe but as an overweight little kid who grew up in a small town where nobody liked them it felt like I had a sense of self. I wrote a self insert story about her called Paper Butterflies, and it was the first time I had ever shown my personal writing to anyone. Now the person I let read it was my grandmother, who is a lovely woman but she definitely doesn’t like things that are too “different”. Well she read it, and I was so terrified she’d hate it that I just wanted to tear my ipod out of her hands. But then she asked me “Are you going to write more of this? I like it.” And that was the moment I think I felt the most proud of anything I had written. Over the years I used Pixel less and less (got a different fursona now, named Cheddar) but she was important to me, without her I don’t think I would’ve ever had shown off my writing and part of me doesn’t think I would’ve ever came out of the closet as Bi and Nonbinary if I hadn’t continued writing and making art. It was cringe and silly and unabashedly childish, but it is a part of my life I could never take for granted. So to answer that question? My name is Cheese and I’m a cat.

For me it's my demonic draconic shapeshifter Wren, which represents both my mentally healthy state, and also takes the form of my state of consciousness. It's the opposite of an escape for me, Wren is a tool for understanding myself, a mirror I can use to analyse myself at a distance. Wren is half character, half mental health tool. I have started going by the nickname too as it's associated with good things, while my real name has nothing but negative associations. I love my big old monster.

I'm glad you had Pixel. You shouldn't cringe about her. Fursonas are in part tools to help us grow. And she was a tool for a certain point in your life, and she helped you grow. She can remain important to you as a part of the journey and as a character forever close to your heart. I've got old some characters who for a long time didn't carry the same meaning for me as they used to, but more recently they've started to take on a new life for me, as if they represent facets of who I am as a person. Maybe some day the story of Pixel will be continued for you like I've had happen with my old character.

This is perhaps the most thorough assassination of cringe culture I've ever seen and it's not even explicitly about it. To me, cringe is exactly what makes life worth living. If you're cringing that means you're seeing something new, different, unique and away from the norm. To look cringe directly in the face and embrace it is to embrace the new and novel. I totally love the idea of silliness or cringe acting as a disarming mechanism. I totally feel that way especially with furries. There have been so many aspects of life I was too scared to interact with for being too scary or serious, like socializing or sexuality or experiencing new art or experimenting with new hobbies or exploring my identity beyond those things. But being able to do those things with a silly veneer of furriness took a lot of that edge away and allowed me to experience these parts of life without feeling like it's too serious. It's exactly like what's described with album album art but it goes so much further than just that for me. I've watched this video at least 4 times now and I will probably come back to it several more times. This is just such a perfect description of a very specific and very real effect that a certain type of art can have on someone and it's totally incredible. This kind of thing really needs a word beyond "disarming." Every time I rewatch this video I come away totally inspired. I have struggled with personal sincerity pretty much all my life and figuring out how to inhabit my silly and honest self without restraint has been a battle. I struggle to view myself from any angle other than what I think others view me as. But this video continues to inspire me to find new ways to be myself and experience life without taking it too seriously. Thanks

Its always forgotten what the furry fandom even is: *an art community* Not just any art community though, but the biggest online art community there is- It's a large group of talented and creative artists of all mediums. There's artwork, music, writing, and so many more- Even fursuiting is just cosplay/costume work and acting. It has its flaws for sure, but looking past the stereotypes and bad apples, its one of the most creative and inspiring groups out there, and even if its silly, its inspired me to find my own love for art, and now I'm studying to advance to a professional level and make it my career. It's a place of talented artists all inspiring one another, and that's something quite special.

a degenerated art community would be the appropriate term and thats not a good thing. i had to clarify that its not good, because every serious problem the furries are presented with, they Never try to account for it. they just shrug it off and just pass it as: "teehee owo we are all porn addicts and perverted for rest of our lives" when you present urself and the community as the most ill riddled place and say that its their quirk, why are furries so surprised theyre viewed overwhelmingly negatively. And, its hard to label the furries as genuine passionate artists fandom, because Most of their consumers and creators are porno addicts and prefer endless amount of meaningless erotic content, the only furry artists that DO have Some passion for their Art, only make up 1% of the Fandom, And since they dont cater to the major furry porn addicts, they end up dying out in irrelevancy. not to mention that the most popular artists in the furry fandom, always make rule 34 drawings and also the fact that the most popular furry site is e621 ALSO a porno site. anyways, in short, the furry fandom is a living embodiment of porn addiction. Furries legitimately have extreme potential for really good art and I mean just damn, when that potential is met it can be fricken glorious. The older I'm getting, the more I'm realizing that cringe culture is stupid and that a lot of the things that are werid are actually really freaking cool or fun if you find the right pockets within their respective communities. Furries get way too much crap and it's a real shame.

Harassment against someone for being part of a peaceful, compassionate and welcoming community due to their difference from the norm and baseless stereotypes is bigotry and marginalization. If I had a nickel for every time a youtuber I've never seen before showed up on my feed in a coming-out video as a furry and then proceeded to sing the praises of Adastra, I would have 2 nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's strange it's happened twice this year. If I had a nickel for every youtuber I've never seen before who convinced me to subscribe to them by coming out as a furry and sing the praises of Adastra, I would have an additional 2 nickels.

Felt this on an unreasonably deep level. My favorite art is always the stuff that’s unafraid to be both incredibly stupid and soul-baringly genuine. Zero fucks given over whether it’s “cringe,” just absolute barely-contained passion for the medium. And as usual, the furries have lapped everyone else ten times over.

This is the reason why a current anime / manga darling of mine is *Chainsaw Man* by *Tatsuki Fujimoto.* Its simoultaneously the physical embodiment of every. single. goddamn b-movie ever made, in how almost every character (or atleast, every single "devil", who are this series main... mostly antagonists) represent a subject / theme that has appeared in atleast ONE shitty b-movie before (wether it be as... relatively humble in power as a Tomato or Chicken-Devil, or as potentially devastating as a mighty Gun-Devil or Future-Devil) along with some absolutely hilarious comedic scenes... While simoltaneously having some of the *most... genuinely incredible ideas in world-building & lore, engaging power-systems, masterfully written characters* (regardless of gender, may i add) *and soul-crushingly devastating moments in ALL OF MANGA.* (to me atleast) It is, by all accounts a *MUST-read,* even IF it's also the story of a boy who wants to feel a boob (though he does want it with consent, unlike most other "horny" anime characters **cough cough** Mineta) and his dog (who is also a Chainsaw, and devil, and... spoilers), being written by a japanese man who frequently roleplays as his *NON-EXISTENT* 14 year old sister on Twitter and, at one point, tried to levitate.

This. This is it. This is what I want my art to be. This is literally (and I'm not exaggerating) what i feel every time I watch one of my favorite movies. My favorite games. Songs. I love media that is dumb and funny and silly, but has some of the most indepth and complex messages and themes. The evil dead franchise. Edgar wright's movies. Everything everywhere all at once. The Postal series. Silent Hill. System of a Down. Resident evil. Undertale and Deltarune. They're dumb, they're silly, make no sense, sometimes are fucking stupid but they're also amazingly enjoyable and funny and horrifying and artistically incredible and make me want to cry out of seeing something so beautiful. They *mean* something, they have something to say, and they don't care to be silly, because you're gonna get it you're gonna understand it, because this is what it is to be human. To be taken seriously, to say some of the rawest shit, and also make a funny man say a funny thing, god FUCK.

But like that Car has been with him from the start- he became THE Ash Williams in that car. he has been through hell and that fucking car is his constant companion and it’s genuinely sad that the car has been corrupted by the deadites….. !!!!!! I'm a furry and think I we t through a similar process when developing my fursona. It started out as a joke character; an intentionally overbaked pastelle cutesy OC you'd expect from a middle schooler - blue hair, studs, slushy shirt, an X over one eye for no reason (directly inspired by Vaggy from Hazbin Hotel) that I then made kind of offputting with a gangly and sickly body as though the character were a drug user, facial hair, and lots of body hair. It was supposed to be a dunk on "cringy" design tropes I "used" to like, but also dunking on me because "lol, I'm white trash!" It was just a character; a costume to put on and take off at will. But, as I had art of the character commissioned and fleshed out the backstory (again, their entire existence was steeped in irony) I started unironically connecting to the character and the universe I had created for him to inhabit. It made me realize that the "tackyness" I was parodying are aspects of character design I unironically enjoy. I think this video finally made that whole process click for me.

There's something to delivering human emotions through supposedly silly or disarming media. Odd comparison, but Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul are great examples of this. The former is a 50 year old chemistry teacher cosplaying as a drug kingpin with his abused twink meth-addicted boyfriend as he slowly destroys the lives of everyone around him, while BCS is about a silly joke lawyer doing elderly people's taxes and nerds riding in hummers while desperately clawing for an escape from the issues which plague himself, leading to him drowning in a vortex of his own actions compounded by the hatred of others. The shows also don't try to denigrate themselves for their silly or absurdist aspects. Hank making his own alcohol or Walter gripping the talking pillow are all taken seriously by the shows, allowing them to show Hank having a mental breakdown as his own escape from reality reignites his PTSD, or Walter's inability to speak up for himself and truthfully communicate with others causing him to breakdown as he tries to tell his family that he wants to die. It's really late, so I don't have any grander point to pointing that out. It's just an observation, that when people embrace being silly and over the top, it allows for people to truly express their experiences in life. Trying to scrub art of that and burn down anyone who accepts such a reality, which embraces being a furry, or over the top comedy, or anything, leads to soulless creations which say nothing in their apathy for the human experience. To dig into a piece of media that does this, there's a pilot for a show about robots on youtube. It's 3D and the plot follows a bunch of robots who, in the aftermath of humanity's extinction, are hunted by angel robots, forcing them to live underground for decades. It'd be such a great series if it wasn't for the show being nothing but it insulting itself. Every character points out the exact trope they follow as if its a subversion, each plot point is insulted as being absurd or unrealistic, each and every idea the show portrays is caked in cynicism. I could barely stomach half of its 30 minute runtime. It just feels slimy, immature. Like a 14 year old who insults themself for having interests just to appeal to the perceived cynicism in older friends. Seeing that style of media die out and be spat on makes me more happy than I can possibly admit.

Just wanted to comment that what you've said really resonates with me, I feel like a lot of modern works has this layer of irony or post irony as if the writers are unsure of their own work and so they shoot it down and acts as if it's just silly nonsense before anyone else does. Maybe it's modern internet culture that's at fault, maybe there's more to it, I can't really say for sure but it feels like a lot of people and creatives are afraid of being genuine, even if it is a little cringe
@RaeIsGaee
@RaeIsGaee 2 жыл бұрын
@@intergalacticspacewizard1966 This exactly, I think a lot of it has to do with the culture that people grew up in. Sure, the irony poisoning present in most internet culture since the 00s but especially into the 2010s played a part, but it's a symptom of society's greater distaste for anything perceived as abnormal. Prior to the 21st century, most media depicting lgbtq folks, or people with niche interests, or anyone else on the outside of society was branded as evil and barred from mainstream publication. Art that genuinely expressed such aspects of humanity were forced into the closet, or ran the thin line between what was considered morally acceptable and evil. Post-90s though, I think art in general was given more leeway to express those voices. You started seeing more and more media with LGBTQ characters or experiences, furry media, and cultures surrounding anything perceived as weird got bigger and bigger online. But in response, people who grew up on pre-00s media, or a lot of people who weren't born in the 00s, started pushing back and reigniting that old hateful attitude. In response, you had more and more young kids and teenagers mimick that bigotry and spite, turning it into cynicism against anything perceived as weird or ""degenerate"", especially on forums like 4chan. But now that more and more adults online and in the world have grown up with less of that bigotry (although absolutely still present), media is moving into post-irony to still shield themselves from criticism. Really tired so I'm probably wayyy off the mark and just rambling, but idk. It just smacks me of the toxic attitudes within society that have been around for decades, just retooled into appealing to people who are drifting farther and farther away from those attitudes.

OH MY GOD THIS IS WHY BILL WURTZ MUSIC HITS SO HARD. It's silly but there's still meaning and then it hits you with a line like "I just did a bad thing. I ruined everything. And I've let the things I've ruined ruin me" And then the song just keeps going like it didn't happen but it frames the next occurrence of the chorus in a different light that makes it feel so much more real and brings out feelings from within you that you wouldn't have admitted you felt until they were unsuspectingly TORN FROM YOU by a song that just moments ago had the absolute silliest second verse you've ever heard. I specifically recommend "Just did a bad thing" (the song I just talked about), "Mount St. Helens is about to blow up", "i'm scared", and "La de da de da de da de day oh" if you haven't heard them.

I get the impression that what you care most about in your art and video essays, is to get the thing across that you want to express, without much regard as to what people might think of it. This is also, (i think) why the Outsider genre music is so touching. It's not like Daniel Johnston didn't know his music sounded "childlike" or "innocent", or that simple melodies with bare-bones lyrics wouldn't be disregarded. Yet, for all the "bad" music boxes he ticks, what made him stand out was his commitment. He said to the world, "hi, this is how i feel, it's kitsch and dumb and cheesy, and it's for you".

i can tell this video has already cleared up a lot of like a lot of fog around my relationship to interacting with and creating art having all of these things that were just overwhelmingly powerful to me, but that i never understood why. i think over time, i've grown kind of jaded about art, because i was searching for a certain thing that i hadn't necessarily lost, but that i had a more rudimentary form of long ago i'd lost the ability to be both genuine and happy at the same time. genuine and fulfilled. outward and honest. my best work came from the worst times of my life, but it wasn't the negativity, the pain, the fear, that made that art as good as it was. it was the fact that i was baring myself to it, and allowing it to be what it needed to be i've lost the ability to translate myself into my art, and i'm just now realizing it. i think this has helped me to get back on track. at least i hope. I'm a robot. 10/21/22 Coming back to add to this a bit, about 3 months later. I've gone through the entirety of Echo, and it really fucking got to me. I'm gonna say: in a way, you have achieved your goal with this video. I was going into this video not knowing exactly what to expect, but the title and thumbnail made it seem like it was a little silly, not meant to be taken too seriously. Then you started talking about your album covers being furries and connecting it to a weird crab album I've never heard of before - and it was really a weapon to disarm me and to get me to listen to your point. And at the end, you really got through to me with your points, partly because you disarmed me at the start of the video, partly because the video in general is REALLY FRICKEN GOOD and makes good points I'm someone who tends to take furry art seriously, because I know the effort and self-expression that goes into the art form. I've never considered this angle your showing here, and it is truly enlighting My name is Lira, and I'm a hybrid between a Jackdaw and a Millipede. Thank you

this is my first time watching the video and I had to stop and rewatch the "hhgregg" joke like 5 times. it was just kinda perfect: -it directly follows a big "video essay ambitious cut to seemingly unrelated thing" -it is paced **just** fast enough that you can parse all the elements of the joke (the initial fraction of a second it takes your brain to sound it out, then the image and the muffled sound) but leaves no more space than is absolutely necessary. -it's so funny, the pairing of the image with that sound, I just, I just, omg. it's so funny .

Recently i stumbled upon a review of a game "Death Stranding". Dont remember the exact wording, but it something like "kojima is either a pure artistic genius, or a juvenile hack making poop jokes." And it pissed me off so much! Death Stranding is a powerful story about struggles of humanity. How even though shit sucks, we have to realize our differences and stay together to move forward. How even though we as a species will die, our life isint worthless. But its also a game where you you throw PISS GRENADES at GHOSTS that are detected by A FETUS you carry in a ARTIFICIAL WOMB connected to you by a MECHANICAL UMBELICAL CORD. This game os both these things, and one could not work without the other - it would not be the same experience. Kojima isint either this or that. He is both! He made a touching game inspired by the political climate of post 2016 america becuse thats what he wanted to tell. But he also wanted to make piss jokes and dumb puns. I cried upon seeing the credits. I hate how pepole view weirdness and uniqunes as something negative or "childish". If you want to create something weird, do it. Be geniuene to yourself and what you want your art - and yourself - to be. And yeah, that includes beign a dog. Love your vid Patricia. Keep on keeping on! (Fix typos later)

I too, am a dog. I'm not really sure why cute cartoon animals just click in my head, they just do. Maybe I'll never know, but I like it and that's what matters. I have to agree that there is something interesting about art that disarms the observer not through deception, but self-awareness. It makes consuming and digesting the content and the questions it asks far easier. Art is about communicating ideas, so the communication is key. Delivering the same ideas through something too concrete can become exhausting. Especially if the topics and themes are uncomfortable and sensitive. I don't like mundane misery porn because at that point I might as well just look into the mirror. Given the chance I will always pick the stupid over the top mecha anime over my own face, even if the message is the same just because it's easier to digest. It's a step removed from the exhausting reality. Furries are probably a good fit for this imho. Anyways, Good video, Good girl.

Having anthro characters in stories can also help disarm people when the surreal-y real happens in what might've otherwise been just a dumb cartoon. Usually it's played for cheap shock value, but I think there's value in using it to deliver emotional beats too. It's what I'm trying to do in my own smut comic, draw you in with the premise of a simple superficial story just to subvert that and make you witness to characters who go through their own issues in a way that should hopefully feel real, if not at least plausible. I'm not an experienced writer but I do try.

i love this video so much. you talk about the self aware satire of sincerity, and in a way that's reflected in the presentation of this video. it reminds me of having a conversation with a friend, just diving into one topic, then segway into the next. feels like just listening to someone talk about the things they like and are so passionate about, which you are. then it's like. oh, these mediums, these similar yet different pieces of media reflect what you want to make, what you want to do with creative indulgences. that's the really cool thing about having a human brain and being limitless in potential, there's inspiration everywhere that anybody can twist for their own sake. and the execution doesn't have to be serious either. it can be absolutely ridiculous. recently i've been diving into furry art? i suppose, mainly anthros with skulls for heads. they look a little silly, but there's still an unsettling aura to an animal with everything but the skin and muscles on its face. reflecting my connection to death, to animals, to myself. yeah. this video is good. i admire everything here a lot. my name is Dexi, and I'm a moth!

I've always found absurd premises way more engaging in art, suspending my disbelief to absorb what the people making it are trying to get out always feels more intimate and like I walk away with more to look back on and appreciate. As someone who likes furry art, Echo and Adastra are both phenomenal and while I wish my friends who aren't furries would play it, I wouldn't want them to change the furry aspect of it to make it more digestible, it being a part of the community they love and the worldbuilding around it makes it what it is.

Seeing this video for the first time has helped me find clarity, in a way. The legitimately autistic topic pinball I use. The collection of “so stupid it’s genius” media I love. The unabashed furry energy I lack. It’s honesty on a level many things aren’t, a bared soul begging the audience to bare theirs in turn. I’ve been comfortably out as trans for several years, now, and I’ve had furry suspicions for about as long, but it’s been hard to quantify what they actually come to. I like furry media, both fluff and ruff ;), but it’s always been this thing where I doubted I was truly a member of the community, rather than a voyeur. “Oh, I think this art’s hot, but I don’t have any concept of how I’d inhabit it.” But this finally tore down that doubt for me. Part of the joy in being a furry is the no-inhibitions freedom in rejecting social conventions. It’s saying “I’m a dog, I’m gay as hell, and I’m proud of it!” Just saying like things like “the fur on my back” is so playfully silly and earnest that it defies insincerity. I’ve been reading a ton of furry visual novels in the past couple years, including Adastra and Echo, and this has given me the courage to step a foot into those games’ Discords, to follow more furry artists, to embrace the idea openly. It’s spurred me on to really think about my self-concept, and actually ask the question “What am I?” My name is Blitz. I’m a cat. What are you?

Another good example of this phenomenon is Robert Wyatt's work. His albums are extremely proggy and deeply indebted to jazz fusion, however, his childish lyrics give his work a deep sense of vulnerability. The lyrics to "Sea Song" are incredibly silly, but it's genuinely one of the most gutting songs I've ever listened to.

Hi I'm Bri, I'm a genderfluid mess. hi I'm Tea (the fox), a character made in my middleschool years to cope with my changing body in ways that I found displeasing. Funnily enough, every time I've managed to create a scenario where Tea ends up realizing who I am far before I did. When I first made Tea, they were a boy. I simply liked his aesthetic. he gave me an added boost of confidence in myself, and it made me feel more comfortable to know how I was changing. Then, as time went on, he started to transition, I wanted to use her as a way for me to understand my own femininity. He was still a boy most of the time, but every now and then I would commission art for her where I would have him "genderbent" to let her appear more. as time went on, I found myself, because of Tea, able to realize I'm not one solid gender. time goes on, and I want to try more things. I want to learn more about myself. I do what I can to understand myself more. taking hormone supplements, doing more socially as a nonbinary person, as a girl, as a man. but I know I wouldn't be here today, if I hadn't had a characterization of myself, who I used as a way to test the waters. every time I was curious, I ended up letting Tea guide me, and letting them do things I was too scared to do. even if it was in ways that is seen as cringe like roleplay, it taught me more about how to feels to be on any part of the spectrum. Who would I be without tea? who would I be without myself? Who cares. I'm Bri, I'm the creator of Tea, and although I don't do near as much as I used to with them, they're my creation, and they're the reason I am who I am today.

This was so incredible and I’m so happy someone finally talked about JerryTerry in a video essay- their edits have been so so important to me for YEARS!! I’d also like to suggest something that’s a softer more domestic type of Sublime- Joe Pera Talks with You- and largely the works of Joe Pera and Jo Firestone. Their works all these disarming, really awkward character pieces that frequently acknowledge the camera or setting of the show (stand up, commercial, phone call) to make this really interesting snapshot of approaching life and daily errands like a gift and a way to grow. I lost a family member recently and I rushed to S2 of Joe Pera Talks with You because of how honest it is about loss, how it isn’t huge and screaming and dramatic but it also needs support and time and is hard. It spills out every once in a while. I’m getting ahead of myself but this video was really beautiful and i thank you for putting things I really couldn’t link together into words.
