Join me in my art studio for another Art Haul, only this week I make a costly mistake when purchasing some new art materials (Holbein Gouache) all the way from Japan. Will they be worth it? I also hunt down where to find Holbein art supplies in South Africa and share with you a gouache and oil pastel sketchbook painting of some roses from just outside my studio window.

Yes it always pays to double check how many oz’s something is online bc it’s near impossible to determine what size you’re getting by just looking at the photo.

Yes, definitely a rookie mistake on my part. I have only ever seen the 15ml/0,5fl.oz tubes of Holbein so assumed they were the same. Now I know that they do smaller sample colour tubes in the sets....and I now remind myself to check and not merely assume. Between taxes and tube size it was a comedy of errors on my part😂Luckily I did love the paint!

I think the Winsor & Newton is creamier than the Holbein. I use both and think I prefer the W&N. Holbein is very stiff but the colors are vibrant. It’s tough call

Thanks so much, I really appreciate your feedback. I also love the Winsor and Newton, such beautiful quality and yes so creamy. I’m less familiar with Holbein so thanks for your observations. Perhaps I’m drawn in by the amazing range of colours (not that we need them, they can be mixed😝)…a bit like a Magpie perhaps 😂.

Hello to you from the state of Minnesota in the USA. I enjoyed your video, and I like WN and Holbein watercolor too. I think both companies have particularly beautiful pigments. I have used WN gouache, but I’m intrigued to try Holbein gouache also. The colors look so beautiful and workable in your video. Thank you for sharing your experience with them, and your sample roses painting is charming!

Thank you so much for watching and for sharing your experiences. I love Winsor and Newton gouache too but since trying Holbein, I would definitely rate it up there for pigment quality and consistency. They also have such a beautiful range of colours. My husband has just gone on a work trip to the UK and I ordered more Holbein colours for him to bring back for me so I hope to share that soon.

@@heidishedlock-acreativelife it's not very easy, here in my tiny town I have to order most of the stuff I use, but there are some nice EU shops like spanish Artemiranda and then there is Jackson's uk, they handle all the taxes so it's still not very expensive to order there. Ii was so happy when I found Jackson's just before the brexit. Their shipping for small orders was like few £, so it was affordable for me to order few tubes or pans at the time. After Brexit I was so sad, because I had no replacement for that shop. But now they managed to get good shipping company again and they handle all the taxes so it's again very easy to order there.

You can’t beat Holbein, anything. I mostly have their watercolors and some sample sets of their gouache and I love their colors and the quality is superb. But due to their cost….here in the U.S., at least, they’re more than W&N. (Schmincke always gets very high ratings, but in the U.S., they’re even higher than Holbein.) So for now, I’m just sticking mostlyto W&N, and it’s much beloved for its quality too. But I’m keeping my eye out for an artist quality gouache brand that’s more affordable…and that I like a lot!

I couldn’t agree more! I love Winsor and Newton, they are affordable and really good quality. I also wish I could purchase more Holbein, I love their oil paint too, but I feel the same! They are just so costly and hard to find here in South Africa sadly! I’ve just seen that Michael Harding the British brand have launched some gouache. I’m really interested to try them as I love their oil paints!

I have had a similar experience in Canada where gouache is not available in our most common art store and I've only found 1 store that sells only Winsor and newton gouache individually and it is 40 minutes from my house. In Canada if you order something over $20 you have to pay import fees when it gets here and that price depends on what you get and where it is coming from, some places have it included but plenty don't.
@heidishedlock-acreativelife

Oh then I feel your pain! It’s pretty similar here in South Africa, gouache is so much harder to find and if anything we have Winsor and Newton but very few other options. Not even local options. Those extra import duty costs are a killer.

Import taxes can also be a concern when we send art gifts to friends in other countries. I'm in the U.S. and sending Prismacolor pencils to a Thai friend meant navigating Thailand's restrictions to make sure she wasn't going to have to pay import duties that were more than I'd paid for her gift! It was possible to ensure she received the gift *as* a gift (no duties), but it took a bit of research and precise filling out of the forms. Because the U.S. doesn't collect duties on much of what we order from overseas, Americans can be pretty oblivious to the challenges people in other countries have to strategize around. Holbein paints and pencils, btw, are expensive in the U.S. compared with what Holbein charges in Japan, so finding a way to order directly from Japan is an ongoing challenge. It amuses me that Dr. Oto Kano buys her Holbein paints when visiting Japan but advises her viewers in other countries to buy other paints manufactured in or closer to their home countries because the Holbein prices she sees in the U.K., U.S., and Canada are so high. I'm glad you got to try them, Heidi, and I hope you find a less expensive source. One mystery for me is that I can often order American-made art materials from Jackson's in the U.K. and pay less for them to be shipped back to America for less than I can buy them in the U.S., even from Blick or Jerry's! I feel icky about that in terms of energy resources, but... I'm not rich, so okay, I buy from Jackson's! LOL.
@heidishedlock-acreativelife
@heidishedlock-acreativelife 11 ай бұрын
Navigating those taxes, especially trying to prove its a gift is tricky business indeed! I hope your friend finally received her gift! I’m shocked to read what you say about prices being more affordable ordering from Jackson’s! Golly gosh! I order my Royal Talens art creation sketchbooks from Jackson’s as we don’t get them here in South Africa and I love them …and the only time I order from the USA is when I can order and have it delivered in the USA to family for them to bring over when visiting. I’ve ordered some Neopastels for family to bring over in August and even with the crazy $/ZAR exchange rate they were nearly half the price I would have paid here. It wouldn’t have been so if I had to add taxes and delivery. Very few places deliver to SA from USA. I’ve contacted both Blick and Jerry’s and they prefer not to deliver to SA, probably just as well for my bank balance! 🫣 SO interesting reading your message, thank you so much!

They do make this set with the bigger tubes. The sets come in 5ml and 15ml versions unless it's a specialty set. You bought the 5ml set and that set usually goes on sale more often than the 15ml.

It was my mistake for not checking the tube sizes in this set, I had been jumping between different options online and all the normal things I would check like size and extra costs, I seemed to slip up on in my excitement of finding a set online that would ship to South Africa as not all places do. I was disappointed in the size of them by comparison but the pigments were as bright and opaque. A really good quality pigment. The ones I found on Takealot were the same size as Winsor and Newton 15ml. I’ve since tried to purchase another colour on Takealot and couldn’t find the colour so also look on Loot. They have a good selection on Loot. Just don’t confuse them with the Holbein Acrylic Gouache, they are completely different and not water soluable after drying.

I did hear a KZfaqr say that she had actually switched and hadn’t noticed until the end of her painting
@heidishedlock-acreativelife
@heidishedlock-acreativelife Жыл бұрын
I’m not sure why but damn you are really lucky! I would love to get some of the seasonal sets, they have such beautiful colours! I use a variety of brands and I’ve never had a problem, and I work with oils, acrylic, inks, gouache and watercolour (obviously not all at the same time). I think the trick is to use a good quality paint so that the pigment content is even. Holbein and Winsor and Newton are both good quality with great pigment content (not diluted with too much fillers etc) so they work well together. Another way to judge the pigment quality is to check how much the colour changes when it dries. If it dries a whole lot darker then chances are it has less pigment in the paint.

I probably should have documented the price in the video because now a year or so on, I can't remember the exact price. But the set was on special and almost half the price of what I had seen on other sites and the shipping costs were similar to what I would pay from Jacksons in the UK to South Africa. So it was a great deal. But I normally pay about ZAR100-ZAR200 in import duties/taxes so expected something similar. I had never ordered from Japan before and I guess the import duties must be a whack more. Lesson learnt. While I can't remember the exact amount it was definitely almost triple what I was used to and I remember thinking that I could have bought 3 or 4 more tubes of paint for the price of the taxes. Never been brave enough to order from Japan to South Africa again 😂

In Spain there's a big problem when ordering overseas. The company that gets hold of your packets makes you pay waaay more than you owe. We are supposed to pay 21% extra in duties but the company that controls the duties always asks you for almost the same amount of money the packet cost. I once got asked 90€ for my 90€ order. I refused to pay it because I know I should only be paying the 21% tax so I let it be and a month later I thankfully got a refund from the online shop I ordered from, since they received my packet back intact. Thankfully nowadays, ever since our country changed some things related to imports, some online shops fix the duty taxes for us and add them to the total order and they are responsible of all the documentation for it to get in the country without being stopped.
