In which I don't go sailing, but talk about Art instead. And Life. And the vital importance of a mixture of the two. And why all Art does not need to be "conceptual".
In case there is concern about a lack of "social distancing" in this video, I should probably make clear that it was recorded at various dates, some of it years ago and so not during the present lockdown in France. I've been meaning to make a video about François Breton's work for years.
THE BEATLES AND ART SCHOOL
John Lennon started at Liverpool College of Art in 1957, where he met Stuart Sutcliffe. Together with Paul McCartney and George Harrison, from the Liverpool Institute next door, the four of them formed the band that was to become the Beatles, initially playing as a five-piece with Pete Best as drummer. After Sutcliffe's death, Ringo Starr replaced Best as drummer in 1962. The band broke up in 1970.

Thank you so much for this. in my real life I restore historic buildings for a living. The way your friend is romanticizing that wonderful building is fantasist. At 61 I still dream of doing just what they are for myself. The reality of life and time gets in the way always. Thanks once again, just beautiful.

Reminds me of why I find sailing to be such a pure, intense pleasure. It’s living in the moment, connected to the universe, utterly immersed in the sight, sound, smell, and feel of it.

Thanks for a beautiful and thought-provoking film Roger. The problem I have with conceptual art is that it reduces all art to ideas and purposes -- the "great concept" you mention. Let the people paint and find joy in their environment and leave the pseudo-intellectuals to search for the hidden ideas in an unmade bed.

Well, that was different, but equally enjoyable. Francois' work is fantastic, as is his son's, and you ain't too bad either. Very Arts and Crafts. The one thing that bothers me is that you could never do what they are doing over here in the UK. PS, congrats on the subs Roger, you deserve more.

Roger, Thanks for this inspiring film. Sailing in itself is a creative activity, just shifting from one place to another by oar or sail, always in the moment. As to the philosophy of art in life, oh yes, I have met in my life maybe two people who live their lives this way. Regarding restoring buildings, if you attempted anything like Francois and his son have done in UK, the local council would never let it past planning. So, we are overrun by vast soul-less developments of new housing in green field sites, with no facilities, no workshops, studios, shops, pubs, nothing. Every day, I see land where nothing is happening on it, no crops, no grazing, apart from a few ponies. What a waste! If people had the chance to buy land cheaply and build out of whatever materials, a dwelling out of their own imagination, and have a forest garden, how amazing that would be. As a kid, I was into geodisic domes, how beautiful and organic, mostly made out of recycled materials I think, if someone wants to live in a 60ft ferrocement seagull and drive around in a lobster car, why the hell not? I am for anything that's fun, and enriches the lives of all of us. Too many repressive laws! Nick.

I enjoyed your video very much, I was reminded of a French couple I met in Carriacou, a small island in the Caribbean. He ran a marine repair facility, I had a broken davit, I showed it to him and he said it was impossible to fix, but about an hour later he had fixed it better than new. He and his wife invited us to their home, which he had built near the beach from materials salvaged from storm damaged yachts. Their home was a work of art with something beautiful and amazing at every turn, broken aluminum masts became aluminum statues in the garden after being melted down and recast. We are too willing to live in "housing units" instead of homes.

Cordialement ! It is so good to hear your words! My dad painted a lot, "seascapes", Breton landscapes, and sometimes also characters. However, he never took himself for an artist, he said that he only did this to relax, and needed and wanted this as a necessary valve in order to exteriorize certain feelings and certain "sensations" that he probably could not or knew how to express it differently. Now, a little humor! Tomorrow morning, I won't make my bed, and tomorrow evening, when I get back to my room, I doubt very much that I was an artist for a day! In any case, a big thank you for all your videos! A little daydreaming always does a little good! Cordially !

Rodger, as always you really do make me smile, and today was no exception your take on Art, was a fresh breath to many as it should always be. Art is an ever changing thing, it beckons to the wealthy as it does to the workers, and Art is and always will be what you place your hand toward. All the classics like Da Vinci, and his many works made comment on the pleasures of the day and the need of invention, Monet, built his own palace to paint, because he loved his lily's, never say that you are not an Artist, even a writer paints with his words to allow others to see, mentally what you are showing. If a watercolour by Monet can sell for 30 million dollars at Christie's, auction house then your Art will also demand a special price, maybe not 30 million, but again, the love and expression you place in your Art, as you do with your writing then, yes, continue to create and be creative, someday, I would love to sail, and be out on the water. Painting is in a similar way calming and refreshing, oil, canvas, paper watercolour, graphite or just a black ink pen, it is all Art. And as you create then yes sir indeed you are an Artist.

Thank you Roger! I am also a registered architect in the US... my family has been here since the 1600's but: i have visited the tombs of my ancestors at Campsie Fells and the lands of Kincayth just 10 miles north of Glasgow and we are Strathclyde Bretons from way back. I felt the love and honor of the place and could disregard the "deconstructivist" mentality of junkitecture I was offered in school both undergraduate and graduate school. I appreciate your sense of calm and the making of place - this was an awesome video that says so much without all the hyperbole of modern art. Many thanks to you sir.

Wonderful Roger I couldn't agree more . I wish more people would take up this simplistic view to life. Art is so much around us in natures bounty too and having a brush , pen , or camera in hand makes us slow down with purpose and thoughtfulness . Art is life it's how you want to live We have every chance to reset our lives with this virus and the impact it has on all of us. We watch all your beautiful videos . Everyone so calming and relaxing to view. Thanks again Roger. Sending you love Paul and Alexis x

There are many forms of art, and it does not have to be defined or validated by a gallery for it to be art. Making videos in a creative way is art, building boats is art, living a life where you appreciate your surroundings documenting it, filming photographing and drawing it is art.

It is and is not the boat or sailing, it is and is not the art be it ancient or modern. It is and is not the architecture or the music in the videos, nor the beautiful scenes one after the other. It is the modest tranquility to ones inner being, propagated by all of your works combined that makes your videos so popular and inspiring. Keep up the good work.

Brittany is such an beautiful land, you can just switch on the camera anywhere and start filming. The coast, the villages and towns, even the newbuild areas are very different to such somewhere else. But this house is really special. And it's owners are too. I bought a classic yacht in Pen Hoat Huon and the previous english owner had a similar house, very simple but including a piece of art drawn by Sylvette David, a Model and Muse of Pablo Picasso.
