The Mind of Watercolor

10 жыл бұрын

My first foray into the world of art journaling. Using Prismacolor Watersoluble pencils, a Sakura and Niji water brush and a Strathmore watercolor art journal, I christened my first page with this rendering of a Carolina Chickadee, a frequent visitor to my feeder. Follow along as I become more familiar with watercolor pencils.

You r correct- there is very little difference between black-capped & Carolina chickadees. Where u saw the bird helps a lot but in the East, there is a crossover from North to South. Here in CA we don’t have Carolina but have chestnut-backed & black-capped. I have Fabre-Castell Aqua Karell watercolor pencils I’ve been using 59 yrs (on 2d Set). Don’t like waterbrushes so use regular watercolor paint brushes so I can control the amount of fluid. I’m working on an art journal with my photography of birds I’ve seen in all 50 states. I’ve seen almost 500 species of birds in USA.

I use watercolor pencils 2 ways. First, I use it as a secondary process when doing a large painting. I first do a value sketch for tonal value, then I do a watercolor pencil sketch to test the color scheme before going onto the full-sized painting. The second way I use them is for small paintings and cards. I will sometimes do a 5 - 7 with them, put them into an oval matt, and an inexpensive frame.

Great bird! I here what your saying about how the watercolor pencils sets in. I have fun with the WC pencils and water pens because of the fact you can control the water better. The WC pencils help to get the fine lines that I want but they are a lite value when you add the water. I noticed with the black you can't get the darkest value but they do have the water soluble grafite now and I want to try one of those pencils. Beautiful painting. Thank you for the demo and keep them coming.

the only tip I've seen lately on watercolor pencils, is to use a razor blade, and flick off or shave off pieces off of the tip, and it makes nice speckles on wet watercolor paper! I want to learn to use the pencils too. I'm not good at it yet, but I think birds are a great subject to start with. You brought that little chickadee to life on paper!

Hi Steve ...lovely watching you paint and I am learning a lot about shading and using a delicate touch. I shave the wood down the pencil barrel for about 1.5 inches to expose the colour and it makes it easy to pool directly with a wet brush lift enough pigment for a wash. Of course the trade off is you loose the ability to have a sharp point but I hold several in my hand at once mixing as I go. Also my style is more serendipitous .......Lynette

One of the reasons you could not lift the watercolor pencil layers is using Strathmore watercolor paper which is not sized well. The same experiment with Arches paper will lift much better. As with watercolor paint, some colors stain more than others and will lift but stain the papers a bit. I have taught watercolor & watercolor pencil classes. Faber Castell Albrecht Durer watercolor pencils melt faster into paint while Derwent and Prismacolor leave more of the drawing quality which I agree is desirable.

I'm learning how to use watercolor pencils and having a rough time of it but that might be because I haven't found the right paper to use with the pencil. I did a landscape, in a watercolor journal, and it wasn't great as I couldn't get color up very well once it was applied. And I couldn't move color around very well. I'll just have to keep working with it to find which technique works the best for my style of painting.

You are Mr. Rogers with the paintbrush. Water coloring nature and teaching us the Lord's blessings of His creations. You are engaging me to buy a small set of 24 Prisma watercolor pencils and a brush pen and journal. You are a gifted teacher. I have been a colorist for 2 years. I love coloring. Freehand and watercolor are uncharted territory for me. A little scary, but I can't fail until I start to crawl, right?

First off, that is gorgeous. I haven't done much with watercolor pencils but I do have some neocolor IIs and I often scribble on a slick surface (palette, glass, etc...) and pick up the color from there. It helps me from accidentally leaving any marks on textured paper that I may not want in that area. (You can also mix colors that way too if you have a limited palette and do not want to layer on the paper.) You didn't seem to have that problem at all! You must have a light touch.

It's possible to get those loose washes like your blue background entirely by watercolor pencils. One way is to lay down a very smooth dry layer, squeeze the water brush and swish it around a lot. Another is to dampen the paper first and then swipe the brush over the tip of the pencil like it's pan watercolor. A third, very common for me, is to press lightly on my scribbles but use a fair amount of water and scrub out the scribbling till the lines are gone. All this works best on watercolor or multimedia paper that's sized and heavy.
@mindofwatercolor

Robert Sloan If you really love painting with WC pencils I suppose thats a valid approach. I take a totally different approach. Its so much easier to do a wash with regular paint that I don't bother. I much prefer to treat WC pencil more as a drawing medium than a painting medium then activate it selectively for tone here and there and keep the pencil technique looks where possible. I personally don't see the point of putting down a ton of pencil only to activate all the pencil marks away with water. Paletted paint is so much easier to apply in large wash quantities and has more mixing control. But... thats just me. Different strokes for different folks!
