Best intro encaustic video I have seen on youtube. I'm glad you mentioned the exhaust fan, something nearly everyone neglects to mention and the single most important thing in safety to be concerned about.

Jon, I hope you are a teacher in real life because your teaching style is excellent. I just spent several hours with your encaustic videos, and every time I jotted down a question, I found that you had answered it by the end of the video. You inspired me to go out and buy a table saw so I can make my own encaustic boards. I only wish I had watched you before I spent $100 on encaustic paints. My next investment will be beeswax and resin (speaking of which, I notice your Ebay store is empty). I am so excited to start working with this medium, so thanks again!

I use 10x's the amount of oil paint based on what you used in this video. I found that using a small amount added to translucent colors where I wanted to have full-on opacity. I also use a 5 to one ratio, I like the harder white (for white, I will use a 5 to 3 ratio, medium to resin) I like to use pipets to draw, and the harder the product, the better the effects! I have tested many combinations and found that I can successfully go higher with the resin for my needs and the product is archival! You started my journey over a year ago, and like you, to take time away from it, usually summer as I love the heat and smells in the winter. Off-season, I make crayon-like molds of whatever medium cups I have on my large skillet and paint with them using small irons. So much fun...thank you for giving me the 'what' 'about' of encaustic and JASPER!

Thank you so much for excellent videos! I have been searching for quite some time on KZfaq and your videos are by far the most informative. Thank you for mentioning Jasper Johns--I had no idea he used encaustics. Thank you for being so generous!

I was just about to start making my first batch of medium and what was stopping me was the filtering part with material- what a mess. OMG- Painter's filters- what a concept! DUH. THANKS! OK- now I'm ready- I finally have all of my materials. Will be looking forward to seeing part 2.

For anyone with a large block of beeswax, or if you still have that giant chunk, melt it down In your melting pot that you were using in this video and ladle the melted wax into a silicone mold such as is sold for about four dollars in Walmart or online, they are sold in the candymaking aisle or cupcake making aisle. They range from about 1/2 ounce in wait to about 4 ounces in weight. Sometimes Walmart has a little loaf like bread pan that is about 6 ounces which they were selling for under one dollar per mold. This is easier to store you can throw it in a Ziploc bag.

Hello I enjoyed you video. My question is that I am interested in this medium. I am a mixed media artist and I totally agree with you.. yup you do get tired of a medium and the I start another project. Just curious they have alt of expensive names selling waxes. I also make soaps. They are melt and pour. I have some really good color blocks. I am still learning about Encustaic. Thanks for the artist no I haven’t heard of him. I will though. Since is pt 1 . I won’t go further in my questions yet. Thanks

Since your are using oil as pigment do you ever find the colors separating on the surface? I have had a blue color I bought and have struggled with a blue that now I wonder if if was made from oil verses dry pigment? I though I made a patch of Medium and should have a different ratio. I use 6/1 ratio and not sure what the different ratios do to our paintings? Great demonstration.

Thank you so much! I finally know what ratio to make coloured encaustic. Ive used Pigment and it doesn't seem to dilued in the wax. . I don't know what i did wrong. I have the pigment . I don't have oil paint as i only work with acrylic. Can you give me advise how to dilued the pigment powder into the wax? Thank you

I noticed that your encaustic medium was opaque when it dried and that you mixed white into your color at the end. Have you ever made encaustic color using a transparent pigment (such as alizarin crimson)? If so, does it turn semi-opaque when it dries? Thanks!

Thank you for the videos! So I took the plunge and made my own medium. How do you get the bricks to pop out of the mold so dang easily? Do you use non stick cupcake pans? Do you put them in the freezer first? I had to partially melt mine and it was a huge mess.

I just made red and blue wax paint and I had a very hard time getting the oil paint to break down and blend completely with the wax. My oil paints are at least 10 years old, some paints could be going on 20. I'm thinking this could be the reason. When I spread them out on brown paper bags to remove oil I didn't notice any harder bits of paint. Maybe I'm letting to much oil leach out. Any thoughts, anyone??? 🤔 also anyone know about the wax oil paint ratio yet? I read through the comments and this question was asked several times, but I didn't see any replies, anyone know? 🤔

He said to use oil paint or pigment. He uses oil because its much easier to find. But you want as little oil in your paint as possible so he spread the oil paint on masonite first to let it drain away the oil from the paint, then he scrapes it off and mixes it with the encaustic medium (beeswax and damar crystals)

I am also deaf. He said 8 parts wax to 1 part damar resin. Melt and strain below smoking temperature as the fumes are toxic. You should be using an exhaust system. Then add OIL PAINT with the oil leeched off by spreading it across an absorbent surface like Masonite, paper towel or cardboard. You can speed up the cooling process by putting the muffin trays in the freezer. That will also help loosen them for removal (personal experience - I like the silicone muffin tins)

Oil paint is not the best thing to use, as it has oil in it which means it won't set... it is much easier to melt and strain the dammar, then add the beeswax. Also most people use 8/2 ratio... You really should check your facts before you put out videos....Take a class at RF paints.
