I think it's important to remember going into this RWC that referees deserve a lot of respect. It is not an easy job at all and I can feel the game starting to edge the way of football. No one is perfect.

We can all agree that nobody would have had a problem with Nigel Owens reffing a Wales match. The man was pure integrity.

Refereeing got so much better since I started watching rugby. 20 years ago there was a lot of "cowboys" being extremely condescending with the players to try and compensate their lack of authority or self confidence... I really like that referees and players got closer over the years, that they are able to joke with each other during a game. Having authority doesn't mean scaring everyone, if you are fair, competent and respectful then people are gonna respect your decisions in return. Players are starting to overreact and scream a litlle bit too much though to milk penalties right now, I wish those behaviours will get penalised before they start being out of control.

This is the good stuff. Respect and be respected. I work as an American football referee down here in Brazil (amateur league of course), and its a tad difficult to pipe down the noise and unruliness because of the annoying soccer/football culture that is already pre-established. Thankfully, we have been able to slowly and steadily improve discipline from our players and coaching staff through lessons learned from Rugby referees, which to me are the gold standard. This video epitomizes those standards, on being fair, courteous, but firm when needed in such a difficult environment. Great video, thank you for that Andrew.

I played 10 years rugby. You respect the referee. And after the play you go drink a beer all together. I never see suporters fight eachother. But drink a beet together all the time.

The sole reason I cannot watch football. The lack of respect takes my attention away from the game completely and just makes me absolutely furious. The way rugby referees handle big player egos make me proud.

Rugby refereeing is a fine line, and a difficult fine line as fine lines go to walk. There's so many nuances to the game, so many laws, so much action and it's often hard to even see what is happening and when. However I've noticed after a long time why I think Owens was such a cut above current referees - it's because he had all the time in the world for decision making. Modern referees seem too hasty to make calls where it's not immediately obvious - in no small part due to world rugby's obsession with speeding up the game. Referees do make wrong calls occasionally, they're only human, but it does seem like there's more blatantly wrong decisions these days. I recall Bristol's thumping of Northampton last season. Northampton scored one try but there was a possible forward pass in the build-up. On review the TMO can be heard clearly telling the referee that the ball has left the player's hands in a forward direction, and that the receiving player catches the ball well in-front of where the pass was thrown from. He plays the same angle over and over and repeats that it's basically a textbook forward pass. The referee then says it's not conclusive and awards the try. At that point in the game, Bristol were some 50 points up and Northampton were never coming out of it with anything substantial, so it seemed at the time anyway. Play had been stopped, the time was off, there was no rush. So why the total dissonance? The referee isn't sure if it's forwards so he asks the TMO, the TMO says it's clearly forwards, the referee then disregards this and just awards the try anyway? This is why fans are getting upset with refereeing these days. One official says one thing, another says another. I can only assume it's because the referee in that game at least was just trying to rush through the process. The other possibilities are that either he's a cheat or he's inept, neither of which seems like the obvious reason.

I have said it before and I will say it again, soccer needs to learn from Rugby referees. Let any one of these guys referee a premier league match and two thirds of the players would be off in the first half, either for simulation or disrespect.

Most of these are just clear, concise warnings to stop behaviour. Then they enforce that warning should a player continue to misbehave. That's the difference from football. "Simulation" is a yellow card- it's almost never enforced. Dissent is a yellow card- almost never enforced unless it's a visible act to the crowd and cameras. Managers going out of their box or screaming at refs, Feigning injury.... Never punished. To those who think it's hard to punish such a thing- no it isn't. Refs decision. Yes, it's a subjective deduction.... Refs decision. As it is it is NEVER punished, how would a subjective assessment pf whether a player is cheating worse than nothing? I think if football refs were empowered/ empowered themselves then there would be a lot less complaints about officiating and we could get it on the road to this standard.

If football refs were like this, there'd be multiple reds every game what with all the scum swearing and shouting at refs the players do, clearly saying "Oh fuck off" etc to their calls, getting in their faces all "what? what did I do?" after basically murdering someone with a high kick to the chest or using both feet in a slide tackle or similar. Sends the message to the "youf" that you can ignore and swear at authority, raising more scum in the country.

There's so much whining about referees creeping into the game from some fans of pretty much every nation over the past few years. Videos like this highlight the way things should be. Pretty much every clip the players acting with contrition and respect. Very little arguing. The way things should be. Obviously poor refereeing shiuld be highlighted but the pro game is so fast and complex nowadays it's a heck of a job.

god football could take some notes. having referees wired for sound and able to discipline players on the spot by allowing freekicks to be moved 10 meters in a direction of the kick takers choosing would immediately kill the petulant childish whinging that ruins many games...

@2:50 was the opposite of good reffing. he was totally incorrect on multiple occassions, allowing Italy to compete over the ball and then retreat out of a formed ruck and then move offside. As Hask has repeatedly explained. The reason he was asking the question was when the ref met the players before the game his interpritation was completely different, and while the LAW is simple, if the ref is applying it differently to how the Law should be applied the only option the player has is to ask what the REF's interpritation is so that you can play too it. Italy's tactic was legitimate if it had been applied correctly, but because Poite made such a hash of doing so the Law was changed.

Wayne Barnes forced to retire at 44 due to death threats? It's just a game. And there has to be rules or it's just 30 blokes in a punch-up. Good refs command respect and Wayne must be up there to do the RWC final. I feel like I'm pointing out the obvious. Love Wayne, love Nigel more, just sayin'.
