I hated having to snap and string beans. there would be a total of 7 of us kens plus my grandmother, my aunt, and my mother and we'd set out on the porch at night for 4 and five hours snapping and de-stringing beans, and that was after the unknown hours we all spent in the field picking bushel baskets full of them. and it wasn't just one day it was everyday and night for weeks... My grandmother was telling us that one year we had pick and snapped over 80 bushel baskets of beans out of 3/4 acer of land... String-less beans are ok, BUT you still have to sit there and snap them... Us boys use to not have to do it, until my one cousin was teasing the girls and told them to go get busy and get to their women work and snap them there beans. Well grandma heard that and told grandpa and that ruined our fun time at night for as long as I can remember... Infact when I was older We took a family vacation down home and when the porch time came at night grandpa would bring out a bushel basket of beans and he asked if I still remembered how to snap beans and like a dummy I told the truth and said yes so I showed my city girl wife how it was done and there we all sat listening to grandma tell the same old stories of days gone bye snapping beans into the night... What I would give to turn back time and set with my grandma on that old porch once again and listen to those stories of days gone by and God's amazing love for us once again... These memories still bring a tear to this old biker's eye...

Mine was going with Grandpa to check on the barn cooking the tabaco. The smell was so good all around, but before the cooking you had to pick, scort, and sew the tabaco on the wooden sticks, and us kids would pick up the leaves that fell on the ground and to watch this and watch them hang it in the barn, was something to see. Nothing was wasted, unlike today, where the pride of product is nothing what it use to be. The care my grandma and grandpa put into their farming was amazing, and it was a family affair, everyone come together to get it done.

Thank you for keeping it real Bri! I think people have a rose-tinted view of what self sufficiency is like. They maybe dont realise the teeeediousness of it from organising the growing calendars to sowing to potting plants on, labelling, care and maintenance thru the growing season...then prep and preserve! Plus children and housework...I wouldnt choose a different life at ALL but its nice to see a tired Momma keeping on keeping on. God bless you and your family xxx

Hey Art and Bri. You guys and the Rhodes clan have been a huge influence on us purchasing 60 acres of land in an effort to change our lifestyle. We are city born and bred and seeing your vlogs have helped us realise that while homesteading and permaculture principals will equal a steep learning curve, it's not an impossible dream. Thank you so much for all your efforts - and though I'm in Australia, I'm definitely learning many transferable skills from you. All the best xxx

Bri, you can speed things up considerably on the beans with some efficiency. Don't position things where you have to reach for each bean. Set the basket on a chair level with your lap; grab a handful of beans and put them in the lap of your skirt and work there. Take off the ends and strings and let them fall back into your lap. If you snap the beans, snap as you go. Have the container for the snapped beans close to (but lower than) your dominant hand and drop them in with a fluid motion. When you're done with one lapful, dump the ends and strings into a container close in front of you. Don't have anything where you have to reach up for it.

I also store butternut squash!! Easy and long lasting. Had a huge crop of sw potatoes a couple of years ago. Roasted, peeled, mashed and dehydrated. Ground into a powder and was able to store 250 pounds of sw potatoes in 5 half-gallon jars!!! Rehydrate with equal part sw potato stirred into equal part boiling water (i.e. 1 cup potato to 1 cup boiling water) - tastes like FRESH cooked!!!

Good job on those beans, Brianna! One of our most enjoyable family time (and we lost the footage we had on that for this year) is sitting around the table and shell peas. Our children compete for the most peas per pod and it is really a sweet time with great conversations. We freeze them. Peas didn't do very well this spring so we are contemplating a fall crop. We are also fermenting quite a bit. Ferments have been incredibly good for our three-year old and her eczema.

I completely agree with you Briana! Putting up the harvest while maintaining daily life with the kiddos is a challenge! I've been canning and freezing boat loads of fruit and veggies for two weeks now and it seems it takes quite a bit longer when you have to stop and tend to the littles. But it is still so worth it! My girls snapped beans with me yesterday and they are learning bits as we go. I'm sure the whole family will appreciate all the hard work. We canned peaches, froze green beans, sweet corn, blueberries, made blackberry jam, dilly beans and pickled green tomatoes. It has been so much fun and such a learning experience!

We have a Four-Star top restaraunt in L.A., California, called, "The Greens". It is a vegetarian restaraunt, for which I purchased their big cookbook. There are so many awesome recipes and many so simple and fast. Take a sweet squash - butternut, spagetti squash - any. Cube it into big chunks, steam it, then peel the rinds off after cool. Sautee lots of garlic, butter, and chilli powder. You can't mess up. Just adjust to your liking each time. You mash the squash with the saute mixture. It is SO GOOD. Fast with only a few ingredients. Easy to whip up when Squash is on sale. You can have it as a main dish, like chilli, or side dish. Everyone i have made this for can't stop eating it. I haven't made it for a long time. Every time I did, I made A LOT. I couldnt' stay away from it. It's a wonderful dinner or picnic dish that will always be a hit and is a great side with just about anything - Spagetti, other caseroles, lasagne, chop suey. Big salad. You name it. Squash is one of my fav vegetables. I love potatoes too. I'm German. Germans love potatoes. I'll try your recepie mixing them together. I bet the satee mixture with 1/2 squash and 12/ potatoe would be good too.

Awesome to see farm and life. My grandparents grew up on farms. They talked about life with little. 6 children and growing their own food. My grandma and her siblings were hungry mostly in years where hail wiped out the garden. They ate 100% of many plants like watermelon. They even ate dandelion tea and the bitter leaves.

Butternut squash is a new introduction to the garden, I love it and am now inspired to grow more than planned. A friend tills my garden and amends the soil. I buy the seeds, germinate them, water and care for the garden and then we enjoy sharing. He and his wife cook often and I..an old lady..enjoys canning and freezing what I want/need. Your comments about gardening with a friend was on spot for me. Thanks for a great site.

Bri...I relate and now with just my husband and I left here at home, when I'm canning during the many weeks of summer and fall, Jack fends for himself many many days but NEVER complains. He loves the meals I make in the winter with the food I canned during the long hot days of the growing season. I really push the greens in this house as they have the healing properties in them as I was told multiple times over the course of 3 back surgeries. I do love green beans, beets and corn BUT along with Art, I would eat butternut squash every day if Jack would let me. YUM!!!

When I knew I was going to spend the day canning, I would make a picnic lunch and snacks for the kids and put it in the fridge. For supper, I'd put something in the crockpot - - all before I started canning so once I was canning I didn't have to stop for anything short of a bleeding emergency. I also taught my little ones that when the canner was on the stove they could not come into the kitchen. They would stand at the kitchen door and yell what they wanted, but did not cross the threshold.

I put hoops of cattle panels up over my garden beds and have been growing yard long beans on the hoops. They taste just like regular green beans but the heat doesn't bother them and they produce all summer. Also very easy to dry and reuse beans for next years crop. I also grow plants that benefit from a bit of shade underneath the hoops. These would also produce enough to put up a supply for the winter.

That butternut squash tip works with nearly ALL winter squash types. If they get a hard shell....it'll work. I had round ribbed squashes on my counter for two years straight before they started to go bad. AND, the squash can be shredded or ground to put into soups and other recipes (I put zucchini- summer squash- shredded into even cakes and brownies- that I store by shredding and freezing)...squash is the BOMB!!

Green beans is one of my favorite vegetables to can. I planted 5 packages of seeds in my garden and hope to get them all canned. My garden is taking over more and more of my time. I love being out there in the fresh air and it is great exercise ... Right now, I am going to plant beets and sweet potatoes and lettuce and butternut squash !!

pumpkin bread w/butternut squash is great too! I'm feeling those sore thumbnails and fingertips from stringing beans! Used to get it every summer. Will be worth it in the end!

I agree with the butternut squash, and I have plenty growing, but I also have delicate winter squash growing too. It has a rich creamy flavor, and will keep all winter too!

Onions and garlic are favorites of mine for the same reason! No canning or freezing. Just grow - cure - and store! And I can use them literally every meal

The garden looks great. I'm with Bri, I think when I grow green beans I will try to pick the non string kind. :) Bri your doing great with meal prep and getting chores done. Art you help a lot more than some husbands, good job.

I just learned to dehydrate the seeds of Dill which were not yet full and still young. These were then ground to a powder and I have already used it in a salad and it was simply fabulous.

I LOVE butternut squash, too. I cut it into chunks, boil it and mash it with butter just like potatoes. It is so good that way. I also use it to make pies.
