I'm not a big fan of these watercolors myself. I'm used to use M. Graham and Daniel Smith tubes, and they are excellent. But I must say you did manage to make a beautiful painting, in spite of the chalky/muddy colors. You're brilliant!

Hi, I think they are what they are: a good student/entry level watercolour. If you got these first and moved onto better quality down the line, you'll be impressed by the bright transparency of the newer ones! I admit I chose a fairly simple flower to demonstrate on - stayed safe, as it were 😉 Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

I agree. They are better than some other student brands, but I wouldn't call them "premium" as it makes them sound like they are artist grade paints, which they most definitely are not. I put them in half pans in a palette and they crack really bad. Probably because of the fillers they use, which makes them less transparent as well.

Thank you!! I think that's the benefit of just being sent the product to review - I don't take any money and even though I thought about using 'affiliate links', I decided against it so I wouldn't compromise my view! I'm always thinking of doing followup videos too, to be as fair as I can to the product so I don't make any rash opinions 😉😄

Your magnolia flower turned out beautifully! You managed to make it look fresh and beautiful even though you were struggling with the paints. I haven’t tried their paints yet, but I have tried that paper and didn’t like it. I actually preferred using the back side of the paper to avoid that mechanical sort of texture. I would have thought they would have sent you their cotton paper instead of the cellulose version. I would love to see you paint another painting with these paints. (Or any other for that matter, as I enjoy watching you paint and listen to talk about the process as well). I would love to see you paint a hibiscus flower. I have been trying to have a go at them myself, without much luck unfortunately. I have several reference photos I took myself and would be happy to send you a few if you like? Hope you have a beautiful week! Much Love and Respect from North Carolina, Stacy

Thank you :D I was definitely more pleased with the flower than the background :) although that might have more to do with my constant tussle with trying to be more expressive! Yeah, the paper texture was unusual, it reminded me of the back of wallpaper so I also ended up flipping it over and using the back with watercolour markers and they worked pretty well. I'd love to have a go at a hibiscus flower so please feel free to send me one (or two!) as I'm always looking for flowers I have not done before! I could even do a drawing video too, showing how I went about sketching it out before painting it? Thanks so much for the comment and greetings from Manchester, England :)

Hi Gee! I purchased these a while ago because the prize was so good and I have other Arteza products that I like. These, however, were terrible. I bought a nice folding metal palette to put in all the colors and let them dry. They literally crumbled so much I couldn't use them. I gave them a bad review, Arteza responded and gave me credit for them. I bought the 36 color pan set. These seem to be better quality. I wouldn't use either one to do a painting nor would I use their paper (I don't like the texture), but for crafting type of coloring and in coloring books the pans work well. I still don't know what to do with my crumbled paints. I used half of the tubes in that palette. I have a hard time thinking I have to throw them away. Thanks for the video!

Hi! :D I watched some other review videos after I had finished mine and there were other people who found them crumbly, especially when they were trying to do the same 'customised palette' idea as yourself. I should say, that when I re-wet them, it was only a day later so maybe they had not had time to crack up. I also noticed a few people stating that they preferred the pans to the tubes... I was not a fan of the paper texture either, as I pointed out in the video I like a more 'random' texture (if that makes sense :D) on my paper. It was good for me to use watercolour tubes though, as I never usually do and it was a different learning experience to the way I normally paint! Thanks for the comment! :)

Thanks for your review - nice hearing one from an experienced artist. I was surprised to see the transparency ratings. I suspect Arteza uses quite a lot of fillers given the high opacity ratings and the grainy nature. I've also seen a lot of comments (including from Arteza) that these do not rewet well and are not meant to be put in pans (cracking etc). They seem alright for a student grade brand, but I think I'd go with Van Gogh over these, maybe Cotmans. That being said, given what I've seen, I'd be tempted to use them as gouache instead haha. I haven't been by in a while but I'm glad to see you're still making videos! Have you thought about doing other "art influences" videos like your Frankenstein one? That was super fascinating to watch :-). Cheers!
@gee355Art
@gee355Art 5 жыл бұрын
Hi - thanks for commenting! You know, I also think I'd choose Cotman as a student level paint - I used mine for years before I took the plunge on W&N Artists WC! Yeah, I was surprised by the transparency ratings as well but I'm glad I got a chance to use them, especially since I'm not used to tubes of colour 😄 I DO intend to do more 'influences' videos, it's just finding the time - I've been thinking of a Georgia O'Keeffe one for awhile now (I know, obvious, right? 😄) but it's good to get some feedback that you like them!! Thanks for commenting and watching!

I ended up buying their bound, smaller watercolor pads. I thought the price was right and I wanted to use them more for sketching ideas. I was not happy with the texture being in little plowed rows, too much like a cornfield or something. I guess I'm more random. And, though this isn't comparing apples to apples I bought their gouache set which I have to say I'm happy with. I have no need to worry about lightfastness. When and if I ever do a painting I want to keep, I'll invest in a higher-end paint. I already have some nice papers so I'm saving that for best! I hate to say it's a good buy for beginners because having a not so great outcome from this product might turn them off to the experience. Red, yellow, blue, white in great quality if you only want to try it out. Thanks for the review.
@gee355Art

I think your palette advice is sound - get good quality primaries and a few others (yellow ochre, anyone? 😉) and mix your colours from them. It might be time-consuming but you make up for that with the mixing knowledge that you collect! The texture of the paper is a little strange for me, I'm used to a much more random and less 'regimented' texture. But at the same time, using a texture like that intrigues me... 😄 Thanks for watching and commenting!

I use tube paint mainly W&N artist quality and they handle in a similar way to the pans (I use pan in my travel kit) so the unresponsiveness to blending on the page is purely down to the paints you are using.

I know, it's something I rarely thought about when I was younger! In a nutshell, it SEEMS to be more pigment and less binder in the better quality paints, but I could be proven wrong here 🙂

I actually prefer they add more chalks in it so it can be used as “opaque watercolor”. I know Pelikan, Holbein, Lukas all have their sets, that could be used actually as gouache. But those are expensive. So if Arteza could increase their opaqueness to make like that kind of products, I believe it will sell very well.! ! Otherwise, I prefer they make this set more transparent to be more like real watercolor. This set just sits in between which makes it a bit difficult to be used widely

Hi, I think you make a good point - it's caught in the middle, being neither transparent watercolour or opaque gouache. It definitely seems to appeal to quite a few people and the price point is very attractive! I also prefer a more transparent watercolour, having used gouache way too much when I was in high school. Have you tried Arteza's gouache paints? I hear good things ☺ Thanks for watching and commenting!

I like them for cheap sketching and journaling. Their price and heavier gouache feel has appeal for that. But they are NOT artist’s premium. My Winsor and Newton rule. Try Artiza’s pans and w/c markers. Also not the best but great for casual work for their price.

@@gee355Art Go ahead with the Amazon program, or sponsorships with any company that you really believe makes quality products! As long as you're honest about it I don't think anyone minds. Since arteza send their products to about every second artist on KZfaq I have to question how cheaply their products are made that they can afford that with the already low price. Maybe I'm old fashioned but I'd rather stick to brands that have been around for centuries.

They act like any other low budget watercolour paint. At that price point they can't fill the tubes with all that much pigment, so you get a lot of fillers and optical brighteners. Those make them more opaque, make them flow less and they crack when they dries in the pallet. The high end tube paints won't do that for you. Personally I would be a bit intimidated by 60 colours, but I guess it is perfect for people who do not like to do too much colour mixing on their own just yet. I got the 24 set and I think it is ok at the price. It will work for people who want to try out watercolours without getting a big hole ripped in their wallet. :) How did you like the paper?
@gee355Art
@gee355Art 5 жыл бұрын
Hi! I WAS intimidated by 60 colours :D after I had done the swatch, I was like, 'There are so many colours!!!' and you know from my other videos, I usually try and keep it simple with 4-5 colours, tops. I think they are a good mid-range set for students or maybe people just trying out watercolours. The paper? I was not a big fan of the texture tbh and you may have noticed that I used a different 300gsm Daler Rowney paper when painting the Magnolia... ;) Thanks for watching and commenting!

Hi! Do you mean take the tubes or squeeze some into a container to take and use? If it's the second choice then I'm not sure how they would be after they dried out.
