An important aspect to consider when determining the pattern of joint involvement is whether it is symmetric or asymmetric, or, in more specific terms, whether there’s bilateral involvement of the same or different joints. For example, bilateral small joint involvement of the hand is considered symmetric. Symmetric involvement is also found in bilateral involvement of the MCP and PIP joints, which affects different digits.
