Arthropods make up about 99% of all species on Earth, but what are they? Arthropoda is a phylum of invertebrate animals that includes subphyla: chelicerates (spiders, scorpions, mites, horseshoe crabs, eurypterids), crustaceans (lobsters, crabs, shrimp, krill, barnacles, ostracods), insects or hexopods, and myriapods (centipedes & millipedes). In this video I discuss the classification of all of these arthropod groups as well as their morphology, ecology, & evolution. Arthropods are the most abundant and diverse group of animals! Arthropods are segmented animals that live in almost every environment on Earth, from deep sea hydrothermal vents to flying insects on land. But they are not just dominating Earth today, they have been dominating life on Earth since the Mesozoic Era. 5:54 The first millipede having 1000 legs or more (record of 1306 legs), was described in December 2021. The millipede Eumillipes persephone is hatched with only 8 legs, and grows more segments and legs into adulthood. They live deep underground, growing up to 1mm in diameter, and 95mm long.

I know this is an older video and I’m not sure if anyone mentioned in a comment yet, but at 5:04 the anterior legs of the spider in the diagram are labeled as the pedipalps, and then the pedipalps are labeled as chelicerae. The pedipalps are non walking appendages used for primarily for feeding, and you can see them pretty well in tarantulas (who appear at first glance to have ten legs) as well as the pincers in scorpions, amblypygids, and uropygids. Chelicerae are generally smaller and located very closely to the rest of the mouth parts, and look a bit like little wrenches or scissors. Chelicerates have a lot of appendages! On an unrelated note, thank you for putting out all these videos, as someone not going to school currently and with an interest in paleontology, your videos are a great resource!

I guess that Geo Girl is also a bit of a Zoology Girl too. Zoology was my major for a short time when I was an undergraduate. Perhaps zoology is an essential part of paleontology.

Oh interesting, I never considered this stuff being useful for zoology too, but it makes total sense! Yea, as a geology major we have to take invertebrate paleo which is why I made this playlist, but if it's helpful to other majors too, that's great! :D

Although theyve actually found a millipede with >1000 legs pretty recently, probably after this video was made, think it was announced nearly a year ago.

The picture used for "ghost shrimp" is not the right kind of ghost shrimp! The one pictured is likely Palaemonetes paludosus, which is named "ghost shrimp" in the aquarium industry due to its transparent appearance. The ghost shrimps under the (now outdated) infraorder Thalassinidea are different (they currently belong to the infraorder Axiidea, with Gebiidea being the other infraorder that came from splitting up Thalassinidea).

There are NO ARTHROPODS that I hate more than Chiggers!!!! 🤬🤬🤬 I suffer from Tryptophobia, just the thought of hundreds of bumps, followed by hundreds of HOLES in my skin would make me want to SAW MY LEGS OFF with a rusty Saw!!!! 🙃😵😬😵‍💫 SO glad I never got them when I lived in the South. Horseshoe Crabs... I was actually disappointed when I learned that they DIDN'T evolve from Trilobita!! 😭 So many similar features... I lived on Long Island, NY in the 80's and 90's. LOVED Beach Camping when the Horseshoe Crabs would come to Shore to spawn!

Crabs.... fascinating Decapods! The most confusing Phylum, because of convergent evolution! 😳 TOO MANY Arthropods evolved into "Crab-Like" animals. It's confusing!

Myriapoda and hexopoda are placed in Uniramia, is it not a mistake when you state that myriapoda are biraminous? Nice video

Oh yea, you are right! Good catch! I think my book labeled it wrong because the text is correct, but the figure I used is wrong. Thanks for pointing that out! :D 👍Crustacea should be the only ones that are biramous ;)

Their legs are clearly uniramous, but just to be clear, Uniramia as a monophyletic grouping has been sunk to the ground, reflected by the tree in the video where myriapods are sister to crustaceans + hexapods. So yeah that can be a source of confusion.

Here's a centipede that has up to 15 pairs of legs, and apparently adds 1 or 2 new pairs of legs every time it molts. Young ones have as few as 4 pairs of legs. I have seen them many times in the house I lived in within the city of Laguna Beach. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scutigera_coleoptrata "They gain a new pair with the first molting, and two pairs with each of their five subsequent moltings."

I too am glad that giant arthropods are extinct as well. If backwards time travel was possible, one period I would NOT travel to is the Carboniferous period (circa 359.2 to 299 million years ago). Too many bugs the size of dinner plates (and/or much bigger than that) lol. Aside from that, keep up the good work :)
